Head Farmers were responsible for monitoring everyone and “everything”  in their districts on the reservation: haymaking to errant children and beyond–way beyond.

Thanks for the photo – this is great stuff. My Dad would love it – he’s a historian.

This isn’t just ancient history. Conditions are the rez are still bad today.

If anyone feels called to help, here are two groups who assist those who live on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

FYI, that rez contains two of the poorest counties in America.

Hi Planetcity1—much appreciate the links you’ve posted and your commentary. Information is all good and welcome.

I realise this isn’t just about history but the pictures are part of history which is part of what today’s about. We have a similar situation in Australia with our indigenous peoples – they have some of the poorest living conditions in the world.

Dad’s books are a bit heavy going – hope you like the book planetcity1 (you’ve motivated me to order a few for myself – better read some I suppose!) – he’s now married to an archeologist who helps the local indigenous peoples negotiate native title claims and development issues with mining companies.

No problem, Gabrielle. What are your Dad’s historical interests?

Mainly stuff to do with war and why humans go that way – the American Civil Wars (wrote a book called ‘The North, the South and the Powers’ years ago), the relationship between America and England at that time, Unions, but he is mostly known for researching Social Darwinism (last book was ‘Darwin’s coat-tails’ Paul Crook).

Thanks for mentioning the title of your Dad’s book. It sounded like an interesting read, and, upon digging a bit, I found some copies that are still available. I should have a copy in hand in about a week…

i don’t mind a bit of heavy going as long as the subject interests me 🙂
