Oil commentary in the Crossroads?! Whoa, who knew…

Well folks it was another hot time for Kansas City’s First Friday galleries in the Kansas City Crossroads Arts District.  The street party atmosphere was not quite as dense as usual probably due to all the folks running out of town in order to beat the heat for the 4th.  But fewer feet hitting the streets can be a good thing for getting around and into gallery venues on  a First Friday where there’s art and food and beer/wine at every open studio and gallery.  This Friday there were street musicians everywhere: in the alleys, on the corners, in the streets and in the galleries.  The Fringe Festival was pre-hawking its upcoming offerings.  In one alley there was a young woman posed as a Hindu goddess on a huge chair ( I think) while six painters worked on two huge canvases portraying her from either side. Videos floated across the bricks while more music blared from booming boxes.  There was energy on the streets for sure in front of YJs and the Art Incubator with some intense street performers. And energy was on the minds of the clean cut middle aged men on the sidewalks offering white, yellow and green t-shirts lettered with “BP sucks”.  I would have gone with “BP spills & kills at will”. But these were clearly middle class American Moms and Pops doing their best so  I’m not complaining.  Hey, they were an unexpected venue indeed.  Does this mean Americans are waking up??? Dunno, dunno…but maybe “something is happening here”— to the tune of Buffalo Springfield~~~

Lets hope the shift has the momentum needed to change the direction of mainstream opinion in America. Do you know about 350.org ? I love them because they are focused on a positive outcome and don’t waste time on blame or argument. Also, they have an art focus which appeals to me.
