Standing Rock Fort Sully POWs, 1891

This information is appearing for Monika — and any other interested silent viewers. All readers please take note that this is a list of the heads of families who returned to the Standing Rock  Reservation in May of 1891 after being POWs at Forts Sully and Bennett since December of 1890. At this point in time I cannot verify the movements of these people after their return as a group to Standing Rock with 1st Lieut. Harry Clay Hale.  Available information supports that these were all people of Sitting Bull’s band who fled Standing Rock when he was killed.  The names on this list are from Record Group 75 materials in the National Archives, Kansas City, Missouri.

More information about these Hunkpapa POWs is contained in “Trust and Survival”, Eva Wojcik, American Indian Quarterly.

The list is only as accurate as the agency ration list itself.

The following list contains information from Standing Rock June 9 to June 22, 1891 ration issues sheets correlating to the new ration ticket numbers issued on the revised rolls, the number of people in each family group on the ticket, and the Indian/English names of heads of families/individual ticket holders:
