"squirrel talk" @ eva wojcik 2011
Here’s a touch of whimsy for all us squirrel lovers. Yes, indeed there are those of us who enjoy the antics of the furry tailed rodents that many others despise for chowing down on birdseed like greedy children devouring free samples in a candy store. Hey, are there still such things as “candy stores” as in shops devoted solely to offering candy in a multitude of flavors and varieties? Come to think of it, I have not been in such in a long time. Anyone out there in blogland know of a candy shop? If you’re a squirrel then black sunflower seeds may be candy along with peanuts in the shells. My grandfather once “addicted” a squirrel to an oreo cookie a day. Long ago I wrote “Mugged by a squirrel for plum”–a true adventure on the campus of U of Cal, Berkeley. Yes, MUGGED was the correct word for that little gangster’s antics. Care to share your close encounters with some of our oh so adaptable high wire scramblers deluxe? Or are you just wondering what they’re plotting above?

Nice! Reminds me of a time once I was sitting on a bench in front of a church. There was a row of benches and these young squirrels were just running everywhere up and down everything and twisting and turning wildly as they flew about as if they were celebrating the whole idea of being a squirrel! “Yay, I can’t believe I am a squirrel, this is just so cool!” – was a lot of fun.

Well firstly I am googling your water colours and hoping they are available in the UK ..Love the colours ..thinking they would work well as a base for my hearts as I start off with water colour ( and love the medium ) Your works here are just wonderful ..Re squirrels here in Scotland we have the cutest sorry but I am bias , the red squirrel is a wee beauty and sadly under threat , numbers are dwindling we don’t see them here so much at all 😦 Funny encounter was one having a row with a pigeon, up a tree . Picture the scene a large Pigeon all mellow and laid back just minding its own business and this wee red squirrel giving him a really hard time , even throwing things at him , I was walking underneath watching the fight play out , the squirrel gave up in disgust ..the pigeon just sat there , plumped up his feathers and gave a small sigh ( OK that’s poetic imagination at work but when birds do that I imagine they give a wee sigh ) Ok off to search for those colours, thank you for all your beautiful work here 🙂

Love the colors as usual with this painting. I feed my squirrels peanuts and corn but they also enjoy raiding the black oil sunflowers from the feeders. All of Earth’s creatures deserve to be fed particularly since humans have taken so much of their habitat.

Ha ha, i like it.
They are so distant.
I think they are incredibly agile critters but i wouldn’t want to get to close to one.
They are still rodents and may carry diseases

I was about to say that there are no more candy stores that I know of only to find out that the one mentioned above by Barbara is about two miles from my house.
Meanwhile I love your tiny squirrels in their lovely Eva world.

This must be what the world looks like to these little creatures. Nice painting, Eva! Your granulating washes are beautiful. Yes. I enjoy the squirrel visits to my yard, Daily. I have even snapped a photo or two to use as reference material someday. They have to eat, too, is the way I look at it when they share the birds’ seed. 🙂

Love the painting! I’m a squirrel-lover, too. I used to feel sorry for them when my mom would rap on the window to chase them off the bird feeder. I like the story of your grandfather feeding the squirrel the Oreo cookie. 🙂
One pleasant sunny afternoon I was sitting on the porch with my father when two baby red squirrels started playing on the branch of a hemlock tree near the house. They ran up and down the branch, frequently jumping off to other branches to avoid crashing into each other. Their antics were so amusing. Their mother (I presume) joined them and then jumped from the branch to the roof of the house. The babies ran after her, but when they got to the place to jump they stopped short, quivering, trying to decide if they could make that big leap. No. Couldn’t or wouldn’t. Then they’d run back and play some more on the branch and then come back to the jumping spot and reconsider their options. They never did jump to the roof.
There’s a big candy shop in Boston my daughter and her friend took me to a couple of years ago, but I couldn’t begin to tell you where it was exactly!

Love the Watercolour of the two squirrels chatting, Eva, your eyes are instantly drawn to them, sitting there, catching up on the latest escapade 😉 Probably planning another mugging. We had a constant visitor a couple of years ago, but since we had to have a large tree removed from our garden I think ‘he’ felt too exposed once his ‘cover’ was blown…. xPenx

I once observed a gray squirrel running along the top of my fence with a full slice of pizza in its mouth! Certainly, these urban squirrels “enjoy” a more cosmopolitan diet than their wild kin do. At the nearby University of Louisville, the squirrels there can be aggressive and practically mug you for food. There are also several albino squirrels that hang out on campus and are favorite photo subjects. I like this watercolor too…it feels refreshing.

lovely colours the squirrels look like the have a long conversation on where the next Beech Tree is. That is my story of the squirrel it found the beech Tree which stood just outside the walled garden. There are not many trees here so it just thought party time YEP so did the Buzzard which came flying in spectacular and had squirrel for dinner. The next visiting squirrel knew the story and was ever so careful the Buzzard came again but this squirrel knew what to do and just jumped near the stem of the tree and had a headache that night.
