I’ve read the comments at Rotten Tomatoes and have decided those critics are full of horse-shyte. YEAH! For the first time in a long time I was laughing out LOUD in a movie theater and clapping. The Brotherhood of the Wolf wasn’t a funny film, but it was incredible on the big screen at a special viewing to test it in my area. I have never before–or since–been in a movie theatre where the entire audience, a fully packed large viewing room, stood up and applauded a film. Yes, I applauded that film and applaud The Lone Ranger–even if it’s all by myself! Raspberries to all naysayers!
If you know nothing about the dark side of American history you can still enjoy The Lone Ranger for its visual beauty, its over the top grand funky action, its delicious humor which is way above the toilet bowl variety many people settle for these days because it’s what the American movie industry dumbs them down with, one of the BEST uses of the William Tell Overture EVER as a soundtrack, the badass white spirit horse, and –ladies, if Armie Hammer ain’t the hottest big man on two feet I don’t know who is! Yes, I will take that man and a side of dynamite to go, please! And yes, it does have a lot of ‘fun’ with the original concept of The Lone Ranger, justice and how the series was played out long ago in a different day and age. Depp is wonderfully deadpan. Hammer plays the naive idealist to the hilt, “It’s just not done.” Luther fans will wish for more meat for Ruth Wilson’s role–but hey, she’s ‘here’. Helena Bonham-Carter–well, hell, when isn’t she in top form? Never. All the BAD guys are really BAD! William Fitchtner rocks as Butch Cavendish (hehe–guess what I’m thinking). Tom Wilkinson delivers the acting goods as he always does. You can have a great time with just all these goodies in the movie basket.
IF you are fairly well-informed about the dark side of American history then get ready for a full, no holds barred assault on–let’s make a list:
*the genocide of the Native Americans
*the corruption of the military – industrial complex
*greed aka the American Way or Manifest Destiny if you prefer
*progress at any cost–Btw, what is progress really? Think about that one folks. Think HARD.
*the exploitation of immigrant workers
*kill the labor leader and stop the rebellion of the slave laborers
*there’s silver in them there hills–hey, gold rush, silver mines –samo samo
*the destruction of the environment–yeah, you can ‘frack’ a lot with dynamite and nitroglycerine
*all the harm an iron horse can do as it moves across a continent
*shall we talk about guns and violence?
*justice is blind–or maybe just blindfolded
*the legal system has nothing to do with justice, truth or what’s right and wrong
*women for a price–there are no free rides–and there are all kinds of prices and ways to pay and pay and pay
*oh, let’s take a whack at good christian folk too while we’re at it. Yeah, being saved and/or born again does not make people compassionate, loving and kind. No way. If I’m offending anyone–well, sorry, but if you’re going to dish it out, you better be able to take it right back ’cause turn around is fair play. Hey, it’s what the script does. Yep.
Do I need to say more?
I could.
We have a problem, Huston: Ride for Justice–who the hell dares do that?
