Monologue #2

Monologue #2

The upside of accepting an invitation to a social gathering far beyond your comfort zone:
You are reminded why you usually keep as far from the mainstream as possible:

Barefoot half-dressed children old enough to know better writhing on the floor of a busy restaurant while people evade stepping on them on the way to the buffet lines.

Tiny birdlike elderly women repeatedly filling multiple plates with food they nibble but do not eat.

Men of all sizes, ages and races bulking up on a never-ending flow of fried chicken, fake mashed potatoes, and ice cream.

Women of all sizes, ages and races eating a never-ending flow of pizza, ice cream and soda.

Children of all sizes, ages and races playing with enough food to supply all the free lunches for several schools for at least a week.

Employees unable to keep up with clearing plates, tables and filling the buffet stations. Even the flatware disappears moments after it appears.

The streets and parking lot are filled with whales of vehicles large enough to swallow your car whole–and then some. What is the gas mileage for such creations? Never mind–you really do not want to know at the moment.

In addition to all of the above, the promised group conversation is disturbingly disjointed, and disconnected among people who supposedly spend some time reading books for pleasure. “Supposedly” being highly suspect at this point. There is a studious evasion of any discussion of politics, climate change and #NoDAPL Standing Rock—
“Let’s not go there.”

“Why the hell not?”

“It makes us uncomfortable.”

“Besides, what is with those protesters?”

“Why can’t they be like everyone else? No, please, please, don’t answer.”

[What two words am I thinking but not saying–(or writing now)?]

Upon exiting the dysfunctional main stream stress level plummets to acceptable health levels.

To do:
Practice polite refusals for future reference until they are part of mental health survival kit and readily available for deployment for evading similar future engagements. After all, It is the ‘season’ when people want to be sooooo sweetly social.

BAH! And Hum Bug Too!

A few words about this blog

It’s not often I write about this blog–why it exists, why I return to it after long and short lapses, or its purpose. In reality this blog served its main purpose years ago. Other than that it’s been a means for a non-tech person to learn the absolute bare basics required to connect with the ever-changing venue of the world-wide web. As such it has continued on as a means of sharing any thing that interests me.  That said, let’s get a few things very clear:

1–This is a ‘free’ blog: I do not pay WordPress for the privilege of using theme thirteen. And WordPress does not pay me. I appreciate having a quality venue for sharing my personal interests with whoever is inclined to visit my blogcasa.

2–This blog earns absolutely ZILCH, Zero, Nada, Nothing in dollars and cents. I have absolutely no connection to any advertisements which appear here. This blog was never intended to generate any personal income whatsoever for moi. It has not. It does not.

3–I will not post comments which contain hate speech, personal attacks on individuals whose books, views, films, music or other creative work I’ve written about. There’s too much hate speech in the world already and I prefer not to contribute to it by giving it yet another platform. Note to those returning to look for said comments: while I respect your First Amendment right to make certain statements please do take some time to consider the meanings of the words slander and libel and potential legal consequences thereof.

4–Regarding a number of primary historical documents from record group 75 posted on this blog. As stated on several such posts–but not all–historical information to which anyone who visits the National Archives has access (take note that there are many people who for one reason or another do NOT have direct access to the National Archives) was shared to make it available to individuals searching for family information (some of this is now currently on ancestry.com), to inform others about historical conditions, perspectives and the lives of real people–what they suffered and endured.

5–Main points one through four being stated as clearly and  concisely as I am currently able to write: It’s 26 degrees here (nothing compared to the brutal cold at Standing Rock, North Dakota)–a drop of over sixty degree in a week’s time. Less than one inch of snow has fallen. This is not normal. The ground remains hard as a rock. It’s necessary to break and refill water dishes for the birds, squirrels, coyotes, and whatever creatures dare to come out at night as there is NO standing water in any of the usual areas for them. The city’s seasonally hired snow crews are cutting down trees instead of plowing snow. I am none too thrilled about this continuing tree removal program but so far am as powerless as the squirrels and birds to do anything about it. Removing diseased tress I understand. Cutting down healthy ones is beyond my comprehension. The news on the political level is testing my patience. My tolerance for the mainstream media has entirely evaporated with their failed coverage of the election, #NoDAPL Standing Rock, and Climate Change.

—On the upside: I am NOT a woman living in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Syria, etc.etc. Yes, I’m well aware certain ‘parties’ in America would have it here as is there. When will the female half of the human population decide enough is enough? I don’t know.

Do No Harm

What’s Stopping You From Not Shopping on Black Friday?

Why not take a load off on the day after Thanksgiving, sleep in, then lounge around in your pajamas with family and friends?

Why not have a stress free no shop till you drop day this coming Friday?

Loiter in the living room listening to music, linger over leftovers, binge on favorite flicks, have a pumpkin pie party, play with your kids, spoon with your significant other, do anything but shop.

Why not?

Take some time out and chill out after all the political reality show insanity–which will probably still be ongoing when you return to the work week on Monday morning. If you need to detox this would be a good time to do it.

Tune out the non-stop advertising triggering your inner shop junkie addiction. Take another route to gift giving this season. Get creative and innovative about experiences, quality time, and engagement with those you love.

Why not give up emptying your wallet into the pockets of corporate CEOs?

Why not donate your time and/or money to a cause that you and a loved one believe in?

Why not spend the time you’d spend shopping for plastic toys actually playing with your children?

Why not invite friends over for a song and dance party as a gift?

Why not?

And if the corporate profit margins don’t cross the red line in to the black profit margin so what? What does corporate America do besides promote consumerism for its own executive gain? Oh and don’t forget that corporations pour money money money into politics for their own agendas serving only their interests. If you think they’re interested in serving your interests you’re delusional.

When you must shop, why not shop only at small, independent business struggling to compete with chain stores?

It’s all about value and values. What are yours?

One way to create positive change is to change how we spend our money–where, on what and why. Because yes money does talk–and we can direct the discourse when we make ours walk in directions of our choice.

So why not take the stress out of this Thanksgiving and take a time out from the tragic comedy aka political farce. Detox and recharge your personal batteries.

The bottom line is that no one really needs to shop at all this Friday.

Why not stay home and eat bonbons while watching all the episodes of Firefly then Serenity? Or whatever trips your stress relief trap.

Why not?

Detox. Refresh. Revive.

Oh and drink plenty of water because Water Is Life.

What are your favorite Bad books?

My top choice is Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. The film clip pretty much gives you the lay of the land.

List of commonly banned books in the US via wikipedia.

Sept. 25 to Oct. 1 is banned books week.

Exercise your right to read freely.

Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is also one of my favorite bad books. And Kurt Vonneguts’s Slaughterhouse-Five is another dark keeper from the usual banned books suspects. I have to admit that unlike the other two books which make you laugh and cry, Slaughterhouse-Five seriously lacks in the laughs column. But it’s a powerful book about the horror of war.

So what books would you stand up for in the age of manipulative mind control?

What does one do when the heat index is lethal and you’re learning what it feels like to be an animal at a zoo?

Yes, I have been seriously MIA yet again from this blogcasa. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been on my mind. There’s been a great deal of mayhem and chaos and downright insanity going on around the world. I’d rather not discuss the specifics as you’ve all probably had quite a stomach full enough of it all to vomit. Yes, it has been awful outdoors here–bad enough for moi to be forced to spend much of summer indoors in order to breath properly and avoid heat illness. This is royally pissing me off because I so look forward to having the windows and doors open during the summer. That has been impossible for months at this point. Gardening and walking has been restricted to the wee hours of the mornings and far and few between low humidity and heat days. Anyone who has not noticed the local change in temperature has not been paying any attention for their lifespan. You would think the increase in their electric bills from running their air conditioners all the time would raise a red flag. But not so for climate change deniers and the those who are just plain clueless. Anyway it’s been a shit summer for me because I physically can not endure the heat index. Please share your summer time weather experience at will. So instead of enjoying the great outdoors this summer I’ve been reading and watching far too many films and series. And thinking about a few things. For example: Do men ever worry about their reproductive rights? Seriously, does the male of the human species EVER have to fight anyone about his sperm and the consequences of sharing it with the female of the species? Hmm? Yeah, it’s been on my mind. Oh and every time I  check on my blogcasa I find things have changed at WP–usually to make things easier for blogging. But it’s a bit like coming home and finding the place totally redecorated and having to figure out what’s what every time. Ah the least of my concerns. At any rate, it’s taken a while for me to decide to do a little sharing of the sort that ought not land me in the pokey for defamation of character. Here’s a list of books, films and music I think are worth sharing. Please, oh god, please, share back because this is the first of August and I am running out of quality entertainment while under heat arrest.

I’ve occupied my  non-writing time with the likes of:

Show Me A Hero— book by Lisa Belkin, HBO mini-series.

IF anyone really wants to have a serious discussion about race issues in America this NON-fiction book and series offers a means for doing so. It also offers some how-to for dealing with community issues. And the trailer hardly gives a sense of the women whose true stories are worth the price of your viewing time.  It might look like it’s all about Nick and the white guys, but it’s NOT.

The HBO series Treme goes to post Katrina New Orleans and strives to portray the cultural, social-economic, racial, justice issues via the personal lives of compelling individuals. It is not a pretty picture of state, local or federal government. If you love the many faces of Jazz you’ve got it made. The issues should make your blood boil. The food will make you hungry. The music will have you dancing and singing. The satire will satisfy a need for intellectual substance. And you just might cry more than you expect.  Absolutely Addictive!

Another series worth spending some caged air conditioning time with is House of Cards—IF you can stomach any more political evil doing. Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and an all around incredible cast dive into the cesspool otherwise known as the American political scene where there are NO rules at all. If you watch this then you’ll have no trouble thinking the worst of the republican and democratic parties–or any other political party. The pursuit of power by any and all means. Everyone is expendable and all collateral damage is acceptable. Evil is real. Oh yeah.

Ah more about human nature in glorious black and white—The Fifth Horseman is Fear. Jewish doctor, Nazis, Czechoslovakia and an injured political fugitive = great drama. What’s your risk factor?  There’s a lot to contemplate in this study of human nature, identity and oppression. The image of the pianos haunts me with its beauty, sadness and tragedy. Keep your eye on the boy in the film. What does he make of everything he sees and hears–oh I do wonder.

Damn, I haven’t even gotten to books and music yet.

Okay I’m going to wrap this post up on an incredibly beautiful note with a link to a blog that those of you interested in film might find interesting. The Case For Global Film has a fine entry for the Hungarian film Love.   Love  stories are not just couples finding each other for sex and corny feel good times. What does love motivate people to do for each other? What does it mean in the grand scheme of all things? Is it the best thing about our species? Maybe. Is it the most powerful –and under-utilized weapon we have to deal with the self destructive chaos that our species creates in the world?

Love is yet another visually gorgeous film in black and white from 1972. If anyone finds a video for this film please drop a link as I’m not having any luck with my searches–yet. Hence the link which offers a host of other films all too often ignored in America.

For now–hello to all. Keep cool if you can. Sing, dance, eat well. Love. And fight the mayhem by refusing to let it overwhelm you.

All Packed and Ready to Go Forth and Conquer Yourself? Yeah, It’s Journey Time.

The Journey is such a deceptive phrase because it implies a beginning, middle and end when there really is none.  One thing leads to another and then to another so there’s always an ongoing journey — an infinite plot-line, if you will, that never reaches any conclusion. If it did then entropy would set in, and that would be the end of, well, everything as we know it. On the other hand, that might not be such a bad thing for cleaning slates and starting over from scratch.

*

Roads and travelers come in all shapes and sizes–literally and figuratively.

Keiko Matsui ~ The Road  album title track.

*

Into the Wild ~  LP – Live, of course. Whistle with her, if you can. I dare you. 🙂 So says moi, who can NOT whistle at all.

Rust and Bone soundtrack  I Follow Rivers ~ Lykke Li ~  Who’s up for a hard-core, edgy and no punches pulled journey into love?

*

Blank Maps ~ Cold Specks.  If someone has found the kiosk with the life maps, please announce it on the intercom for everyone’s benefit.  Thank you.

*

Into the Wild –Eddie Vedder ~ There are a number of videos with this music connected to the film by the same name.  I decided to stick with the focus on Vedder’s voice and lyrics.

*

Why Across the Universe?

Because of all the concrete and abstract journeys it contains: a young man’s journey from home to find his biological father; journeys of the heart and mind; journeys into and out of the war machine; journeys of friendship; creative journeys and spiritual journeys. The film is pretty much jam packed with a lot more than great Beatles’ music, though that alone is reason enough to give it some of your precious time–if you’re a Beatles fan, of course.

Across the Universe ~ I Want You

*

A great survival story is a great survival story—that’s my response to those folks who have issues with the source material for this film.  Frankly, I just don’t give a damn.  Considering the way serious political history is constantly abused, misused, spun, and misrepresented by some film industries, I can’t get worked up about whether or not everything in this film is factual or not.

The Way Back ~  Tibet by Burkhard Dallwitz

*

I’ve served  The Thin Red Line on other occasions–sigh. Listen closely and let Private Witt speak for himself.

The Thin Red Line ~ The Swing Scene

ps. This is subject to massive revision without notice. 🙂  Don’t forget your meal tickets.

Feel free to offer some detours of your own.

Breasts: boys’ toys or best baby food ever?

Have you had your silicon implant fix today? Hmm?

This is a miss-take on the old sensual Saturday music themes of old. If this breast talk offends anyone I’m not apologizing because, after all, breasts have been around as long as humans in any variety. Without them Homo sapiens wouldn’t be here. Newsflash– baby formula is a profit motivated industry and boy oh boy, have modern folks bought into it big time.  In the OLD days, if a mother couldn’t feed her baby for some reason, then a wet-nurse was found to provide sustenance. Yes, other women fed the babies of other mothers. Imagine that.

* Now consider what this is all about:

Is that sexy or what? Hmm? I’m still waiting for the male underwear model version of this to hit prime time television.  Anyone got any information on THAT? What?!

*

Hmmm, just another profit driven industry?

Or?

Is all this breast business really all only sexual attraction?

Medical reconstructive surgery for breast cancer patients aside, of course.

Ironically, sex, not the stork,  is the means for procreation. Shhhh, don’t tell the people who don’t like sex education in schools about this or they may do something drastic to shut down the sharing of the facts.  Mother Nature doesn’t comprehend the people who are offended when women breastfeed their babies in public. Heavens forbid anyone should see the real thing doing what it was created to do. Does it sound like I’ve got an agenda here? Yeah, I suppose it does. Hmm….who’d have thunk it?

~

What do babies need? Food. Where does it come from? No, not from the Gerber factory.  It comes from some glands. Who knew?

*

*

Wow, women have breasts for something other than filling out bikinis and bras for interested parties to ogle and grope. So much for second basing.

As for the next video, the Islamic element was unexpected but not distracting , and of all the videos I viewed on the tubes of you this one made the points that interested me in the manner I found most appealing today: bonding, nutrition, IQ, stress reduction.  The text flows a little fast for my reading speed so you might want to hit pause when a new frame appears.  I suspect there’s some irony loitering in between these lines at the moment.

*

Why this post at this point?

It’s about time I got this off my chest.  🙂

I feel so much lighter already.

Comments? Questions? Funny stories?

Anyone care to share the money numbers on the breast implant or the baby formula industries?  If not, I’ll try to update with some $$$$ information when time allows.  Thanks for visiting. Refreshments are in your fridge. I’m having pistachios and pomegranate juice. 🙂 Cheers.
