Media, Music and Movies ~ For Uranium Mining On Navajo Land, Plus Snow From Sewage

Yes, it’s Monday. It’s St. Patrick’s Day. It’s national beer drinking day for a lot of folks.

But it’s also another day in the ongoing fight against uranium mining and its consequences everywhere from the past to the present.

On March 14, 2014 independent journalist Amy Goodman reported from Flagstaff, Arizona about the ongoing environmental and health issues connected with uranium mining and its long-term consequences for the Dine ~ Navajo people.  The main portion of her video report is posted here but there is a great deal more information and related coverage on Democracy Now!’s site.  Part of the Democracy Now! broadcast discussed the use of music and film by to raise awareness and share information regarding issues.  To supplement DN!’s coverage I’ve included two videos featuring Klee Benally’s music and an informative video about Outta Your Backpack Media which teaches Indigenous people how to make and use movies to address the need for media justice and coverage in their communities.  There’s a trailer for the film The Return of Navajo Boy which is referenced in the news piece.  The film’s website –> http://navajoboy.com/.  Democracy Now!’s page for the story also includes links to information and related stories.

Bearspawprint’s music theme selection, Wolves,  can’t quite speak for themselves.  They’re being hunted by “us” for no sane reason. “6,000 permits to kill 625 wolves”? What is that about?  Wolves need our help to survive.   In addition to the music there are links to groups on Facebook for more community alliance information and actions.  I’ve included  two extra films for more information and education.

If you’re on the fence or indifferent, consider this: which predator is wiping out the other species on the planet?

Off the fence yet?

Running With Wolves in Poland   “Bells” music
A sled ride through the forest with a pack of semi-wild wolves.
These young wolves were part of a re-introduction scheme and have since been released into the wild, the conservation director was familiar to them and they seemed happy to follow the sled through the forest as long as he was present.

Republicans in Wisconsin like writing legislation in secret.  * They had attorneys and Legislative staffers write the most recent redistricting bill in private law firm offices – – earning a tongue-lashing from a US District Court Judge appointed by Ronald Reagan.
* They let an out-of-state coal mining company work behind closed doors to help write the iron ore mining bill.* And you can put the 2012 wolf hunt law on the list of Wisconsin legislative legerdemain, according to comments in minutes of a public, all-day, April 21, 2012 Wisconsin Wolf Stakeholders Committee meeting in Wausau.
Twenty representatives from the DNR, and a wide variety of environmental, Native American, conservation, animal, hunting, and other organizations attended the meeting, along with DNR facilitators and additional staffers.

Reasons Why Recall Is Underway Revealed–on Native News Network –>> http://www.nativenewsnetwork.com/reasons-why-recall-is-underway-revealed.html

Sorry for all the links folks, but I think it’s best that people looking for information regarding this Recall effort see/hear/read it at places where it can be found online so that they have those sources for the future.

I’ve been following Dine’ water issue and watching to see how this all plays out with much interest in how the Navajo people are working together.  There’s only one thing I can contribute to this story. It’s been over 30 years since I spent some time at what was then Ganado Community College in Arizona.  While there I learned that many Navajo and Hopi people had to haul water from wells, from natural potholes in the ground that caught rainwater, from 55 gallon drums, and anything else that would serve, set out to catch rainwater or that were filled from natural sources and hauled back home.  At that time they’d been doing all this water hauling forever. Thirty years later they’re still doing it in many communities.  In a video for SB 2109 Sen. John McCain used a photograph of Navajo people drawing water from a well and he made a comment that they have no infrastructure to deliver water to their homes.  McCain did not go on to say that this should not be happening in 2012. He did not say, “These people need infrastructure to get water to their homes.” What he did say is that water can be used effectively by OTHERS and should be!

Here I sit where with the twist of a wrist I can turn on a flow of water into a kitchen sink and fill a glass with clean drinking water at will. Another twist and I can send water through a hose at a drip to the local heat exhausted birds foraging in the front yard. I can flush an indoor toilet all day long. Hot and cold showers are available on demand.  The laundry machine is just a few steps away for washing clothes. The only water I haul is in a plastic two gallon pail to the little bird beach in the backyard under the trees beyond the reach of the hose. Can you imagine having to haul ALL your drinking, cooking, bathing, gardening water all the time? Think about it. I suggest Shelly, McCain and Kyl think about it too.  Furthermore, I suggest they DO it themselves. Yes, I suggest those fellows all get dropped off at the Navajo community furthest from any water whatsoever and be left to their own devices to get their water supply in order to survive. All on their own with no one to help them carry a single drop.

Our Cemetery of dead hearts and minds = Black Friday

It’s Black Friday. I’ve always wondered about this concept. As a child I never quite understood the use of the color black in regard to this day. Sure, I’m fully aware that it refers to the economic books of  retailers getting into the black profit zone and out of the red. I comprehend that financial  concept and yet–yet especially today it’s irritating the hell out of me.  There’s no mystery here. I know  just why “Black Friday” is ticking me off royally–it reveals just how out of whack the dominant mainstream culture really is. It is a sign of ignorance–as in the lack of knowledge, lack of substance, lack of values, lack of integrity, lack of reality, lack of comprehension of what’s really necessary for living and living WELL.  All the people engaging in the vast consumer addiction game have their heads thrust so deep in the sand that it’s downright terrifying to behold.  American priorities are clear–this is a culture based on greed coming and going.  Don’t bother wasting time posting to tell me that I’m raining on everyone’s Christmas Parade. Why? Because  I think the Christmas Parade needs to END.  Why? Because it has NO meaning whatsoever as is clear from the current state of the world at large. Why in hell are people giving more money to corporations that have already posted record profits while ruining the global economy?  Engaging in this Parade is not only a denial of reality, it’s not just a moment of escapism for relief, it’s another sign of abdication of responsibility for the world in which we live.  Worse yet is the LIE it perpetuates.  Yes, the LIE, because how can people profess a desire for love, peace and sister/brotherhood while engaging in a system-game that destroys all these things?  Yes, it is Black Friday–but not in the financial sense—it is a day of mourning, the day of funeral pyres for a civilization that engages in perpetual wanton destruction of everyone’s environment, war, and hatred.   I’ve got a few notions about “door-busters” that have nothing to do with sale items.

Today on Democracy Now!, which usually airs at 8 am cst on KKFI, Amy Goodman interviewed two men with whom I found myself in nearly total agreement–IMAGINE THAT!!!—-author Derrick Jensen (The Dominant Culture is Killing the Planet) and economist and Right Livelihood Award Winner Chilean economist Manfred MaxNeef on Barefoot Economics.    Even if you might not find a lot of common ground with their thoughts, you might want to seriously consider what you agree and disagree with and WHY.  Yes, venturing over to read/view Goodman’s show for November 26 ought to provide anyone with lots of concepts to discuss with family and friends over the “holy days” feasts forthcoming.  Hate or love their ideas–but I doubt either will be boring.

This first video seems like a good way to create some awareness of the interconnectedness of all things.

Jensen’s interview reveals the depth and breadth of his scope of vision of our problem.  As stated earlier, you might not agree but it’s well worth your time to hear him out then thinking about why you don’t–or do–share common ground.

Clearly people are capable of unified action for a one day event. Doesn’t it follow that humans  are capable of unified action for more than one day if they really understood the stakes of this survival game? We need to do more than just turn off the lights for an hour.

Earth is an incredible planet. It is the only home we have. We do not own it. If anything Earth own us. Earth can exist without humans. Humans cannot exist  without Earth.  We cannot purchase another Earth.  The Universe does not conduct doorbuster sales.
