Killer Animations * Competition * Is Now Open

The Music Theme is Competition—got that? Right. Yeah, I didn’t quite stay totally on the targeted task. Absolutely my bad. If that disqualifies my effort, so be it.  I’ll give the next theme another go instead. But I am grateful to Johnny for stimulating my blogging –even if the cake isn’t quite what was expected.   So how did this selection come about? Easy, I was fishing for animated videos about competing and had an unscheduled brainstorm–ooops–yes, those are like thunderstorms the weather channel never mentioned.  Anyway.  These videos all  have music and they’re all going to compete for you. Which one do YOU like the best? I gave them all common ground of being about killers in one form or another.  And, aside from the Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer”, which introduces the sub-theme of killers for the animated works, all entries are from the Mad Artist Publishing channel on the tubes of you. I thought that was a way to narrow down my field of selections and possibly introduce anyone with similar sensibilities to their creative madness.  Hence the presence of a link to enable net surfing to more animated delights.

Yes, there are many other animator channels on the tubes–and if you find a wonderful one I demand a link.

If you would like to share a favorite which does not appear here, please do so.

For anyone paying attention, I kept these to a time limit in order to keep down the required listening time–otherwise there’d be OTHERS, many others.  I am interested in who likes what. This is supposed to be a competition so comment accordingly. Or not. 🙂 No pressure. No stress. Just killer animations.

The Wild— Is There Still Such A Thing?

As The Borg say–> “Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.”

I’ve given up resisting the faux serious slant this post on The Wild demands to take.

Deal with it.

Or not. No one is stopping you from cybersurfing to greener Wild blogland pastures.

Dreaming Dreamer Dreams ~ Music Theme Dream 5 January 2014

We all dream. Even if we don’t recall what we’ve been doing or where we’ve been, we’re all busy during all those sleeping hours–and the waking ones as well. How often do you stop and consider just what your dream-life is trying to communicate? Do you take time out to day dream at will? Are you haunted by dark nightmare dreams? Do dreams fuel your creative engines? Or do they allow you to vicariously experience strange and wonderful things beyond the scope of your comfort zone? Where do you dream of wandering? What’s in any dream? Have your dreams ever taken you into unknown territory in your waking life? Dreaming can be a very dangerous thing depending on where the dreams lead. Or not. I guess that depends on what’s in your dream packages.

“Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?”

Dreamer ~ Low Roar ~ Ryan Karazija ~ His live version is equally compelling, but the audio has a slightly more intense quality on this track. Or perhaps this is because simply offering the song encourages you to close your eyes and focus on the sound and lyrics without the visual component.

Love You More  ~ Tresspassers William

Nela Cotrim :

Published on Sep 30, 2012

Trespassers William was an indie rock/dream pop band known for its ethereal music. Originally from Southern California, they moved to the Sodo/Capitol Hill area of Seattle, Washington.
Formed in Orange County, California in 1997, Trespassers William released four albums and two E.P.’s. Anchor (1999) appeared on Sonikwire Records and is now out of print. Different Stars was self-released in 2002 and was re-released twice — most recently on Nettwerk Records on October 19, 2004. In early 2004, the band moved to Seattle. Their third album, Having, (mixed by the Flaming Lips producer, Dave Fridmann) was released on February 28, 2006. The band toured the United States and Europe several times, including a U.K. tour with Damien Rice and a festival appearance in Spain with Morrissey. The band’s music attracted modest press coverage and exposure, most notably in British magazines such as NME and Uncut and was featured on such television shows as One Tree Hill, The O.C., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Felicity, and movies such as A Love Song for Bobby Long and Annapolis.
The band disbanded at the beginning of 2012. A b-sides and rarities collection titled Cast, which also contains an expanded edition of their 2009 EP The Natural Order of Things, is scheduled to be released by Saint Marie Records on September 4, 2012. Anna-Lynne Williams continues to write and record as Lotte Kestner and one half of the duo Ormonde. Matt Brown is working on more Disinterested material and is playing with and producing several other groups.
Matt Brown — guitar and keyboards Anna-Lynne Williams — vocals and guitar Josh Gordon — bass guitar, drums, percussion, guitar Ross Simonini — bass guitar and keyboards Nathan Skolrud — drums, bass guitar, and keyboards Jamie Williams — drums

*I’ve included the notes above provided by the music uploader, Nela Cotrim, because of my own interests in tracking these indie musical artists. In case anyone else is interested, I’ve shared them.

Music Theme for 25 December ~ Joyeux Noel ?

It’s THAT time of year:  The holy time for many in many different places and languages. It’s a time of year I personally find very troubling and unsettling in many ways. It is perhaps the time of year of the most discordance between reality and what may simply be a willing suspension of disbelief of reality. I’m not sure what to make of it even after all my time spent on this planet in this life.  This is not a new state of questioning mental affairs for moi. It’s like  a very well-worn pair of dress shoes that still are very uncomfortable. Much is done in love and caring in this time of year. Much is also done in violence and uncaring at this time and the rest of the year.  There does not seem to be a balance as far as I can tell. Hence. I will not claim or praise that some things like peace, goodwill and love towards others exists when it clearly does not at large. A state of global affairs which is possibly due to lack of will. Or perhaps its lack is due to flawed human nature. I’m not sure.  I do know there is not peace on earth, nor is there enough good will among men and women to make it so.  I wish there was.  Perhaps one day there will be. I wish it was already. Peace to you and yours.

A story inspired by a shoe-doll displayed in Childhood Museum, Edinburgh. This short film shows a touching story about a young girl and her father in a poverty, London, 1910s. Qian Shi’s BA Animation graduation film. The Best Student Film of BAF08. MX Award at TAF2010 (Tokyo Anime Fair 2010).

“The Museum of Childhood Edinburgh has plentiful collections of dolls, toys, and other remnants of youth. On a visit there 2005, I found an old doll made from a shoe. It was not very remarkable compared with the other beautiful dolls on display, but it is still very eye-catching. The introduction reads: Doll made from an old shoe that belonged to a poor child from the London slums in 1905.

I couldn’t help imagining the little girl who could barely afford a pair of shoes taking comfort in this lovely shoe-doll friend who accompanies her sweetest dreams. The shoe-doll became a symbol to me of beloved and colourful childhood.

I decided I wanted to tell a story of this little shoe-doll.”

Who Dwells Where ~~ Winter Solstice Musical Theme

Consider this a fully non-linear intuitive selection based solely upon very subjective personal engagement.  Each piece in its own way connects to dwelling in, between and beyond in some fashion. I’ve decided not to elaborate or comment on these in order to leave it open for your ears and eyes.  Much thanks to Simon for lending his poem Turned, Gone On to this Musical Theme posting.

Winter Solistice ~ Cold Specks

ColdSpecks

Wikipedia:  2013 Female Artist of the Year  SiriusXM Indies Awards[7

Cold Specks is a band led by Al Spx, the pseudonym of a Canadian singer-songwriter based in London, England.[1] Her musical style has been described as doom soul and shows the influence of American deep south gospel with a strong goth streak.[2] She signed with Mute Records at the beginning of 2012.

Lyrics

We fell from a dying tree
We wait for it to leave
I wanna be, I wanna be
Leave ashes for borrowed instruments and borrowed hearts
We will pass them on to every saint and dead lover
I have my God so give me my ghosts

Sons and daughters,
may you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters,
may you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters,
may you kill

I saw your grandfather’s death on the news
Remembered when you took me to your room
You put your hand over your chest
Swore that the fire would rage

Whoa I…
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
Swore that the fire would rage

Yeah, you know better ways to fall
Yeah, you know better ways to fall
You know better ways to fall
You knock me down, knock me down
Put my cold hand over my cold heart
Turn the fire and die whoa
Turn the fire and die whoa
Turn the fire to die

TURNED, GONE ON (requiem)

Stillness now, lost blue and empty silence.
After wracked storm, tearing breath,
Tangled rain. The howling
Has ceased, calm, calm.

Where sun reaches, there
Is hope of a little warmth.
But little warmth in shade,
Little warmth when the face
Turns away from light.

Calm void where you have gone,
Spacious, rested, freed from pain of time.
Naked void where you were,
Are, no longer.
The empty fields,
The stiff sloped horizon,
The days ahead unformed, vast.

These winter roads
Will lead to a surprise of spring,
But not soon, not soon.
Not before the world becomes ragged.
It must become ready, choosing, too,
Letting go what is,
Letting uncertainty bloom.
Too tired to breathe
One last slow, drawn out,
Whispered breath.

The void of skies
Fills slowly with new cloud dreams.
The scoured earth will clothe its scars
In new skins of green life.
The hollows will slowly fill,
The woods, they will be bound in birdsong.
It will become gentle, dancing once more.
But not soon,
Not soon.

D.S Nelson:

Classical? Will Chopin, a little cello, The Pianist from Warsaw Radio, and maybe a train ride do it for you? ~ Oh yes, of course, this is a Music Theme for December 18, 2013.

Perhaps I should say a few words about how and why we’re here in classical music land. Or maybe not. Johnny picked it. Yes, the R.E.M man selected this Classical Music Theme.  Time for a non sequitur: I’m partial to certain music at certain times. While doing this post I indulged in Chopin, animation and a piece about history which found its way into book and film art via The Pianist.  One could truly go wild with this classical theme. Let’s face it, we could be all over the globe with classic this and classical that. At the moment, about all I can muster is a slow waltz. But the once scandalous waltz is better than nothing, is it not?

In the 1771 German novel Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim by Sophie von La Roche, a high-minded character complains about the newly introduced waltz among aristocrats thus: “But when he put his arm around her, pressed her to his breast, cavorted with her in the shameless, indecent whirling-dance of the Germans and engaged in a familiarity that broke all the bounds of good breeding—then my silent misery turned into burning rage.”[4]

~~

Shocking many when it was first introduced,[10] the waltz became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s, spreading to many other countries in the years to follow. It became fashionable inBritain during the Regency period, having been made respectable by the endorsement of Dorothea Lieven, wife of the Russian ambassador.[11]Almack’s, the most exclusive club in London, permitted the waltz from about 1812 on, though the entry in the Oxford English Dictionary shows that it was considered “riotous and indecent” as late as 1825.

What would they make of Lady Gaga and Madonna and the rest of the sex song singers? Hmm. There might be a lot of bonfires……..

Departures ~ Cello solo ~ Ave Maria Gounod and movie theme.  We’re all born and we all die. It’s good to go out in style.  When his music world goes bust, a cellist has to find another way to put rice and fish on the kitchen table.  A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

How many stars do I give Departures as a film? *****  5 out of 5. IMDb  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1069238/

Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom: Bach, Fractals and the Art of Fugue —Fractals, math art, oh yeah, music deals with numbers and a lot of them. Huh, who knew? Maybe that’s why children who receive some form of music instruction while in school get stimulated to do things.  Oh I’m not saying what kind of things. Just things. Like thinking and such.

Harlan Brothers :

There is a poetic connection between the music of Bach and the famous fractal known as the Mandelbrot set. Bach’s compositions represented the height of Baroque sensibilities; intricacy, nested levels of adornment, and the suggestion of infinite space were compelling structural properties in the art and architecture of his day.

The Lone Ranger & Tonto versus the Iron Horse Makers aka The Corrupt Military Industrial Complex ~~ Does Disney have any clue what a subversive film The Lone Ranger truly is?  I sincerely doubt it.  Neither do a lot of people who post bs on online about Depp’s makeup and the rest of the basically unimportant shyte. The important shyte is what’s going on–and still going– with the military industrial complex’s death grip on the world.  As for the music and the film, well,  hold onto your hat, because these guys are playing with dynamite! Not to mention that gun inside Red’s leg.

I can’t help but return to Chopin and a touch of history portrayed in film with this last piece. Here everything comes together–the actual pianist playing the music of specific historical moment in time. Can you imagine playing anything while under military attack?

Wladyslaw Szpilman (Wladek) played this music in the last live broadcast for the Polish Radio on 23.9.1939 . An hour later German bombs destroyed its power supply and the Warsaw Radio closed for long 6 years.

~~~~~~
Speaking of Warsaw Radio  — There is a new band which takes its name from the musicians who played on the Warsaw Radio Station in 1939. I stumbled upon the band while searching for another info video regarding the historical radio station. You can discover them online —>> http://www.warsaw-radio.com/ . Oh and they’re currently performing in the side bar videos. Their most recent video release is Light Up The Night and it’s headlining the recent post list aka mixed relish. Their music is  not classical, but the connection to the last musical selection above warrants drawing a line to their dot.
Thanks Johnny.  I might never have discovered Warsaw Radio if not for your Classical Music Theme choice, and my own adherence to Dirk Gently’s holistic detective paradigm.  True story.  Yeah.
More Amour ~ With legs, hands, lips and ~~ The Kiss
Okay, some sexy love fun is in order and, well, the photographs sing their own song. John Lee Hooker just ices the cakes. Hmm.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen high heels quite like the ones in the very last image of this video. Ladies, the last set of heels is all yours.  Homage to the sensual side of love–with a lot of legs. Yes,  a lot of legs. I think we have some idea of what appeals to this particular incarnation of “Irene Adler.” And to many of the rest of us.
It ought to be easy to find a translation of a song’s lyrics, right? Not so with In The Forest, a Polish tune.  Apparently the words cause even modern native speakers some grief because this is not modern Polish.  Best I can figure is that perhaps there’s some questions about if the guy deserves what happens to him–and, the thought “shit happens.” You’ll have to watch to the very end to get that last thought via an image. At least that ‘s how I’m interpreting it right now.  It’s bit of a walk on the dark side of romantic relationships. Just a bit. Don’t be dissuaded from listening because you don’t know Polish and there are no lyrics. The images tell a very familiar girl and boy story. I have no doubt you will recognize it.
I discovered Edna St. Vincent Millay in the fourth grade. What can I say? Great things in the school music and arts program–which also included The Highwayman of which a version also appears here and Poe’s The Bells, which does not appear here.
Love Is Not All
Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
And rise and sink and rise and sink again;
Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
Or nagged by want past resolution’s power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It well may be. I do not think I would.
Drive Elevator Scene ~ The Kiss ~ composer Cliff Martinez ~  Heads up, if you’re squeamish,  then stop watching for a short time, don’t stop listening or you’ll miss out, after the kiss while the music is in transition. If you have not viewed the film Drive, which is a truly great film, then I highly recommend it. Mary Poppins it is not.  That said, what would you do to protect those you love? Also, yes, Ryan Gosling’s character knows the man in the elevator is a hit man and he knows he has fatal intentions. He steps into the elevator knowing. These are not random acts. Everything has intention.  I cannot think of another film kiss that can compare with this one. If you can, I invite you to share it. Furthermore, there are clips of this scene set to other music by fans. I don’t know why they bother because Martinez’s score here is flawless for sheer emotive power in my opinion. Everything matters in this scene, every image, every look, every sound.
What can I can? If you love poetry, then discover Neruda if you have not already.  Here’s just one sonnet why.
One Hundred Love Sonnets: XVII
BY PABLO NERUDA
TRANSLATED BY MARK EISNER
I don’t love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz,
or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:
I love you as one loves certain obscure things,
secretly, between the shadow and the soul.
I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom but carries
the light of those flowers, hidden, within itself,
and thanks to your love the tight aroma that arose
from the earth lives dimly in my body.
I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,
I love you directly without problems or pride:
I love you like this because I don’t know any other way to love,
except in this form in which I am not nor are you,
so close that your hand upon my chest is mine,
so close that your eyes close with my dreams.
The Highwaywman ~ Loreena McKennitt ~ Listen and read and imagine.
Xouliamas
Album: The Books of Secrets
Year: 1997
Lyrics by Alfred Noyes, abridged by Loreena McKennit
The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees
The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon the cloudy seas
The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor
And the highwayman came riding,
Riding, riding,
The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.
He’d a French cocked hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
A coat of claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
They fitted with never a wrinkle; his boots were up to the thigh!
And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
His pistol butts a-twinkle,
His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.
Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark innyard,
And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred;
He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
But the landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.
“One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I’m after a prize tonight,
But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
Yet if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
Then look for me by the moonlight,
Watch for me by the moonlight,
I’ll come to thee by the moonlight, though hell should bar the way.
He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand
But she loosened her hair i’ the casement! His face burnt like a brand
As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
(Oh, sweet black waves in the moonlight!)
Then he tugged at his rein in the moonlight, and galloped away to the west.
He did not come at the dawning; he did not come at noon,
And out of the tawny sunset, before the rise o’ the moon,
When the road was a gypsy’s ribbon, looping the purple moor,
A red-coat troop came marching,
Marching, marching
King George’s men came marching, up to the old inn-door.
They said no word to the landlord, they drank his ale instead,
But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;
Two of them knelt at the casement, with muskets at their side!
There was death at every window
And hell at one dark window;
For Bess could see, through the casement,
The road that he would ride.
They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest;
They had bound a musket beside her, with the barrel beneath her breast!
“now keep good watch!” And they kissed her.
She heard the dead man say
“Look for me by the moonlight
Watch for me by the moonlight
I’ll come to thee by the moonlight, though hell should bar the way!”
She twisted her hands behind her, but all the knots held good!
She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
They stretched and strained in the darkness and the hours crawled by like years!
Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
The tip of one finger touched it!
The trigger at least was hers!
Tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horse-hoofs were ringing clear
Tlot-tlot, in the distance! Were they deaf that they did not hear?
Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
The highwayman came riding,
Riding, riding!
The red-coats looked to their priming!
She stood up straight and still!
Tlot in the frosty silence! Tlot, in the echoing night!
Nearer he came and nearer! Her face was like a light!
Her eyes grew wide for a moment! She drew one last deep breath,
Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
Her musket shattered the moonlight,
Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him with her death.
He turned; he spurred to the west; he did not know she stood
Bowed, with her head o’er the musket, drenched with her own red blood!
Not till the dawn he heard it; his face grew grey to hear
How Bess, the landlord’s daughter,
The landlord’s black-eyed daughter,
Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.
Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky
With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high!
Blood-red were the spurs i’ the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat,
When they shot him down on the highway,
Down like a dog on the highway,
And he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat.
Still of a winter’s night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
When the moon is a ghostly galleon, tossed upon the cloudy seas,
When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
A highwayman comes riding,
Riding, riding,
A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.
