What’s Stopping You From Not Shopping on Black Friday?

Why not take a load off on the day after Thanksgiving, sleep in, then lounge around in your pajamas with family and friends?

Why not have a stress free no shop till you drop day this coming Friday?

Loiter in the living room listening to music, linger over leftovers, binge on favorite flicks, have a pumpkin pie party, play with your kids, spoon with your significant other, do anything but shop.

Why not?

Take some time out and chill out after all the political reality show insanity–which will probably still be ongoing when you return to the work week on Monday morning. If you need to detox this would be a good time to do it.

Tune out the non-stop advertising triggering your inner shop junkie addiction. Take another route to gift giving this season. Get creative and innovative about experiences, quality time, and engagement with those you love.

Why not give up emptying your wallet into the pockets of corporate CEOs?

Why not donate your time and/or money to a cause that you and a loved one believe in?

Why not spend the time you’d spend shopping for plastic toys actually playing with your children?

Why not invite friends over for a song and dance party as a gift?

Why not?

And if the corporate profit margins don’t cross the red line in to the black profit margin so what? What does corporate America do besides promote consumerism for its own executive gain? Oh and don’t forget that corporations pour money money money into politics for their own agendas serving only their interests. If you think they’re interested in serving your interests you’re delusional.

When you must shop, why not shop only at small, independent business struggling to compete with chain stores?

It’s all about value and values. What are yours?

One way to create positive change is to change how we spend our money–where, on what and why. Because yes money does talk–and we can direct the discourse when we make ours walk in directions of our choice.

So why not take the stress out of this Thanksgiving and take a time out from the tragic comedy aka political farce. Detox and recharge your personal batteries.

The bottom line is that no one really needs to shop at all this Friday.

Why not stay home and eat bonbons while watching all the episodes of Firefly then Serenity? Or whatever trips your stress relief trap.

Why not?

Detox. Refresh. Revive.

Oh and drink plenty of water because Water Is Life.

It’s some sort of “gratitude” day so here’s a hand for Warren Zevon.

Okay it’s the day for giving thanks. Hmm, lots of people in America have been doing their best to get home for a gobble gobble dinner of some sort. And the transportation industry loves them for riding all the planes, trains and automobiles.  Hmm. Why the big push to get somewhere in order to get stuffed? Just a quick glance at Wikipedia’s entry for Thanksgiving can raise a lot of questions about what’s going in many modern minds regarding this pig-out day. Yeah, it doesn’t have much to do with Pilgrims and Indians unless the Earth’s Harvest route is taken. Here it’s the precursor to a big fat mindless day of shopping when many businesses hope to finally push their investments into the “black”–as in profit margin column. No big surprise it is it in our contemporary world where MONEY is the big kahuna.  Now celebrating the bounty of all Earth offers for food makes sense to me.  The rest does not.  Frankly many Americans eat so well year round that obesity is a major health issue. But there are many people who go hungry in America. Why? The inequities in our economic system and our values provide some answers.

Thanks for all the music.

Darkside time.

Now for something entirely different–the delightful, and unfortunately very late (as in dearly departed)– Warren Zevon:

Which dead musician do you give thanks for making music?

Our Cemetery of dead hearts and minds = Black Friday

It’s Black Friday. I’ve always wondered about this concept. As a child I never quite understood the use of the color black in regard to this day. Sure, I’m fully aware that it refers to the economic books of  retailers getting into the black profit zone and out of the red. I comprehend that financial  concept and yet–yet especially today it’s irritating the hell out of me.  There’s no mystery here. I know  just why “Black Friday” is ticking me off royally–it reveals just how out of whack the dominant mainstream culture really is. It is a sign of ignorance–as in the lack of knowledge, lack of substance, lack of values, lack of integrity, lack of reality, lack of comprehension of what’s really necessary for living and living WELL.  All the people engaging in the vast consumer addiction game have their heads thrust so deep in the sand that it’s downright terrifying to behold.  American priorities are clear–this is a culture based on greed coming and going.  Don’t bother wasting time posting to tell me that I’m raining on everyone’s Christmas Parade. Why? Because  I think the Christmas Parade needs to END.  Why? Because it has NO meaning whatsoever as is clear from the current state of the world at large. Why in hell are people giving more money to corporations that have already posted record profits while ruining the global economy?  Engaging in this Parade is not only a denial of reality, it’s not just a moment of escapism for relief, it’s another sign of abdication of responsibility for the world in which we live.  Worse yet is the LIE it perpetuates.  Yes, the LIE, because how can people profess a desire for love, peace and sister/brotherhood while engaging in a system-game that destroys all these things?  Yes, it is Black Friday–but not in the financial sense—it is a day of mourning, the day of funeral pyres for a civilization that engages in perpetual wanton destruction of everyone’s environment, war, and hatred.   I’ve got a few notions about “door-busters” that have nothing to do with sale items.

Today on Democracy Now!, which usually airs at 8 am cst on KKFI, Amy Goodman interviewed two men with whom I found myself in nearly total agreement–IMAGINE THAT!!!—-author Derrick Jensen (The Dominant Culture is Killing the Planet) and economist and Right Livelihood Award Winner Chilean economist Manfred MaxNeef on Barefoot Economics.    Even if you might not find a lot of common ground with their thoughts, you might want to seriously consider what you agree and disagree with and WHY.  Yes, venturing over to read/view Goodman’s show for November 26 ought to provide anyone with lots of concepts to discuss with family and friends over the “holy days” feasts forthcoming.  Hate or love their ideas–but I doubt either will be boring.

This first video seems like a good way to create some awareness of the interconnectedness of all things.

Jensen’s interview reveals the depth and breadth of his scope of vision of our problem.  As stated earlier, you might not agree but it’s well worth your time to hear him out then thinking about why you don’t–or do–share common ground.

Clearly people are capable of unified action for a one day event. Doesn’t it follow that humans  are capable of unified action for more than one day if they really understood the stakes of this survival game? We need to do more than just turn off the lights for an hour.

Earth is an incredible planet. It is the only home we have. We do not own it. If anything Earth own us. Earth can exist without humans. Humans cannot exist  without Earth.  We cannot purchase another Earth.  The Universe does not conduct doorbuster sales.
