“The Lost Vikings” A Cautionary Tale for Our Times: Adapt or Die

While tooling around on the tubes of you in search of other items of interest I came across this PBS segment from Secrets of the Dead. Finding it quite appropriate regarding a number of subjects and issues for our times–climate change, Indigenous life-ways, values, survival, food, water, religious influences et. al., I decided it was worth sending up a blogcasa flagpole. What would you do if your church told you to not adapt to the changing environment? Do you keep doing what doesn’t work? Or do you change, adapt and learn new skills in order to survive and thrive?

Grow! Don’t “Mow”! New Green Industry = Grow Forests

Seriously–forget cap-and-trade. Forget all the nonsense about expanding until all the Earth is covered in concrete. We all know concrete cracks. Nor does concrete produce Oxygen. Consider the increasing need for clean air. Think about the recent Urban Air Bamboo Billboards project. Now–imagine trees everywhere. Not just any trees planted helter skelter, but trees native to each landscape flourishing, thriving, expanding so that they produce oxygen–which ALL Homo sapiens require for life 24/7 year round–yep, even corporate oil executives need oxygen no matter how much they may deny it.  Hmm, with those trees will come other plants –and animals, insects, birds–all sorts of wonderful living things! Of course humans will have to learn a great deal about all their non-human living relations in order to adjust to sharing the Earth’s space in a positive non-destructive manner. There’s really no reason to fear those curious little skinks exploring the undergrowth.  We’re all much larger than any of them.  What is keeping us from growing more trees? Why don’t we pay the countries with rainforests to keep their forests intact and expanding? Let’s not just maintain the rainforests, let’s encourage their expansion. More Redwoods anyone? Hmm? Why not? How about oaks, cottonwoods, birch, aspen, pines? Think of all the jobs that would be created in order to educate humans about how the return of forests would benefit them –and owls, beavers, fish, elk, wolves. What new things could be learned and discovered about the medicinal properties of wildflowers, grasses, trees? Many biologists, chemists, surveyors, teachers would be required to deal with all the information starting with collection to distribution.  Imagine a world in which humans live amidst nature instead of outside, disconnected, and alienated from the web of life.  New urban designs for cities with more than city parks–but cities as “parks’–as greenways. How about some consideration for animals that need to migrate? Hmm? I’m sure some clever imaginative folks can devise all sorts of tunnels and bridges and other pathways for our animal relations to travel safely.

Imagine Earth alive and thriving with forests, prairies, cacti galore.  Imagine thousands of people planting trees, repairing removed mountaintops, clearing out the plastic in the oceans. Cleaning crews could be busy for decades.  Imagine a healthy planet.

The map posted at Greenpeace International is from 2006 so I suspect there is much LESS forest today than it depicts. But this offers a starting point.

Isn’t it time to put an end to this:

And get some traction going perhaps this way:

Btw, goats will eat any plant that is not toxic to them.

I’m not entirely “pleased” with this post. Please share your suggestions, input, ideas, questions, brainstorms for improving it.

Imagine, Dream, Create ~ She Creates

She Creates

 @wojcik  energy-scape

Everything man-made was once in someone’s imagination, a dream that was the basis of creation. Look around at every thing you have and know that it all came from some one’s mind. This is proof of our power to create. We create all sorts of ‘things’ from art to nuclear weapons. We can create a sustainable way of living on Earth — we can live in ways that are benefical and positive for everyone. We can if we want to. If we have the will. No one else can do it for us. We must do it for ourselves. We must recognize that we are living organisms on a planet where everything is interconnected with such complexity that is more than the mapping of DNA. We can make life better for every living creature–human and non-human on Earth. Why don’t we? What’s stopping us? We can imagine. We can dream. We can create.

  Do we want more than war, self-destruction, pollution and extinction? The choice is ours.

So do we create to serve our egos? Do we create to serve the abstract concept of ART? Do we create to satisfy the abyss of the appetite of the marketplace? Why do we create ART in all its strange and wonderful styles and forms? Why do we compose music? Why are poems written to lovers far away? Why are songs sent out across time and place to woe women—and men? What end is served by the creative process? Is this an indulgence in the fantasy of being ‘god-like’? Are we conveying the creative energy of the infinite universe? Why do we create?

Is it all Art for Art’s sake when all is said and done? Or is it just another way to go insane while  trying to survive in a world that simultaneously touts great art while telling emerging artists they’re quite mad for thinking of living for creating art because there’s no profit in it?

If art has no real place or power  or worth in mainstream cultures then why have artists of all genres been imprisoned and executed around the world and throughout history? How terrifying can a poet like Osip Mandelstam possibly be? What is the threat embodied in the Russian masterpiece of social and political satire, The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakow? What is the power of Picasso’s La Gurenica?  And what does the audience learn from Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play, “Our Country’s Good”? Many people read the diary of a young girl, a girl who probably gave not a fig for who might read her words in regard to ‘art’ or anything else. Yet, Anne Frank’s ‘words’ –written without intention of informing or influencing anyone–express a need to create as evidenced by their existence.

Why do we write?

Why do we blog?

Why do we paint, draw, photograph?

Why do we create?

To cross or not to cross, such is the quest.

Crossing

@wojcik

   Will we cross from the dark side to the light? Will we strive to create sustainable lifeways that are  mutually beneficial to all living beings and Earth? Will we honor this planet for all it offers for life? Will we walk the bridge to another way of thinking, being, seeing or will we stubbornly cling to what does not work, cannot sustain, and will destroy ourselves? Shall we change and dream new worlds or die in our own waste? The choice is ours–yours, mine, and theirs. Don’t wait for leadership from the “powers that be”. It’s not coming. They don’t get “it”. Lead. Now.

If it’s Wednesday, it’s Radio Redux Day!

Click with care if you dare.  This Suicide is an audio collage running on the edge of the search for truth and survival.

Paragon Radio Suicide #141 Awakening

Oh yeah, folks, it’s Wednesday and at www.kkfi.org that means it’s Radio Redux 6-7pm CST.  Sick of Rush, Savage, Hannity, and the rest of the good old boy’s club? Do you like some edge in your talk radio?  Got a wish for a reality check? Think radio is just for old dudes with attention disorders? Think again. The Radio Redux is definitely not a good old boy.  What is a “constitutional anarchist”? Catch the stream online and Ben will speak for himself on that account. No telling who else might venture into KKFI’s audio stream with a phone call. No guarantees. No tickets required. No promises of roses and easy solutions. Just a view of what’s happening from the streets of Kansas City out to the world of oil spills and our need to “awaken”.  We are indeed walking on the dark side in order to get to the light–if we survive.

If you did not buy gas on July 27, thank you.

Hey lots of positive vibes to everyone who did not buy gas on July 27.  If you would like to connect with other like minded folks, please post a link to your blogcasa.  Waves to Leslie & Xine for their already known ‘company’.  Not buying gas on one day is not a huge step–but it is a step towards the potential unity we possess.

Other small things we can each do every day to save Earth–and ourselves:

Purchase locally grown food. Real food ‘rots’ — so avoid processed faux food products. Do you really want to eat something composed of ‘things’ you can’t even pronounce the names of?

Use public transportation, carpool, ride bikes, walk whenever possible.

Reduce the cleaning products you use–seriously, read the labels on the products you’re using and consider ‘safer’ alternatives.  Baking soda, vinegar and elbow grease can do ALOT.

Reuse, reduce & recylce as much as possible instead of adding to the floating trash heaps in the ocean.

There are MANY of us. If we all start making changes in our daily lives NOW it adds up. Make every day Earth day with your own mindfulness.

Bikes for the World–cycle recycle bicycle

I learned something NEW today.  Thanks to Isabelle’s Not a Boring Day posts about her small paintings of bicycles I discovered that there is an organization that actually gives bikes to needy people around the world. You can even donate a bike! They will return it to pedaling condition and put it to work.  What a novel notion!
