What’s Love Got to Do? Musical Theme for Friday, the 13th of December 2013.

So what’s love got to do with everything? Ask the very incredible Tina Turner, I’m sure she can do more than sing about it. But hear here we’re starting off with a song by an artist well-known for her Celtic treatments, Connie Dover.  Last Night By The River is decidedly not Celtic. It’s based on a Shoshone ‘song’ and it differs decidedly from all the other tracks on The Border of Heaven which offers other love songs, all of which have been sung by others elsewhere–except the song I’ve selected.

Everything ~ The Doctor and River ~ artist Lifehouse ~ It’s River Song and The Doctor, do I really need to write anything else? I think not. I won’t. Well, yes, I will. Just a little bit. If you’re out of this romantic couple time loop–then you’re missing out on a fabulous love story across time and space.

The Road Home  ~ This is a story about the first couple that marries for love in a little rural village. It’s a very beautiful film visually, musically and story-wise. It often relies totally on music without lyrics.  A must for all hopeless romantics.

The Road Home – Chinese Movie by Zhang Yimou – with Zhang Ziyi, Sun Honglei, Zheng Hao, Zhao Yuelin – Soundtrack composed by San Bao

Summer Kisses Winter Tears ~ Julee Cruise  ~ Laura Manuel’s description says a lot. Tears of the Black Tiger is also a love story. It’s different. It’s Thai. I love it. The song sings for itself. Oh there are wonderful waterlily images in this film which make it a must for visual artists. The clip does not do the imagery justice.

Laura Manuel :

Tears of the Black Tiger is a 2000 Thai western film written and directed by Wisit Sasanatieng.
With its loud acting style, exuberant sets and stunning shots in pastel colours, it´s one of my favorites movies. In this video i wanted to make a resume of Tears of Black Tiger’s atmosphere.
I made this! 🙂

The Eternal Vow  ~ Green Destiny, Love Theme, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon Yo-Yo Ma ~ Tan Dun  ~ It’s all very green. 🙂  No singing frogs today.

A Love Before Time ~ Coco Lee with cello by Yo Yo Ma ~ Cello. Cello. Cello. Cello.

Liz M :

A few of my favourite “love scenes” from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The two couples are Li Mu Bai and Shu Lien, the older couple, and Lo (Dark Cloud) and Jen, the younger couple.

Les Temps de l’ Amour ~Francoise Hardy~Moonrise Kingdom ~ Young love, delightful, defiant and dedicated. Moonrise Kingdom is a treat for those of us who adore such things as Bruce Willis not acting in another die-hard flick. Yes, he can act. Who’d have thunk it. Love as an adventure–get packed, don’t forget the music, the books or the cat.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Can not think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It is a long and short
It lasts forever, it will be remembered.

It is said that twenty years it is the king of the world
And there will be eternally in our eyes
All the blue sky.

It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Can not think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It puts you in the heart
Much warmth and happiness.

One day it’s love and the heart beats faster,
Because life goes on
And we are quite happy to be in love.

It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Cannot think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It is a long and short
It lasts forever, it will be remembered.

Oh, no, I’m not done yet. You’ve met Donne in the prompt post for this theme.  I wonder who would have the musical chops to set Donne’s love songs to music? Any suggestions?

A Few Trips for All Hallows Eve Traps–Mind the sound wires, please.

I can’t seem to get too far from horror films for this All Hallows Eve theme just yet.  All of this could change, be revised soon after it hits the blog casa- or not. I’ve kept close to things that give me the willies, which might not be the same things that give the rest of you the willies.  There are a lot of strange things going for the scare-the-hair-off-you brass ring for the picking and biting.

While I wish there was much more music in the form of a traditional soundtrack, the short film Echa makes the most of musical and other sounds in order to create a very effective atmosphere.  When the film fades to black keep on listening until the very end for the full musical effect.

Echoes is the interweaving story of Kasia and Sebastian, a young Polish couple, taken on a metaphysical journey that combats [combines] Polish history, culture and mythology.

Kasia, a young philosophy student, discovers a local history book that stimulates her imagination, forcing her to confront the tragedy of the past manifested in the walls that surround her.

Sebastian and a group of friends plan to rob a train using a deadly sleeping gas, only for their worst fears to materialize in the form of a Polish myth.

This allegorical and surreal look at Polish culture as seen through the eyes of a younger generation is both terrifying and strange.

*The absolutely great thing about the film 28 Days Later is that about midway through the film it turns neatly from one kind of horror film into an even more terrifying one based on human nature rather than grisly zombies.  Prior to this point you’ve got plenty to actually think about in regards to survival issues. After the film worm turns, well, there’s an exploration of things that may stick in your brain-pan much longer than the zombie scenes.  The trailer is to provide a look at the film. The theme –well, it’s a great piece of music by itself in many ways.

What’s a Halloween post without a ghost song? Hmmm? Something about this lovely videos just kept tugging me back to it. Hat’s off to Max Ablitzer for his crows.

What can I say except the film trailers for Night Watch and Day Watch are pure self-indulgence on my part.  If you’re looking for some film entertainment to get serious about for the dark holy day’s night, then you might enjoy Night Watch and Day Watch as much as I do. Yes, they’re Russian flicks-and yes, they do live up the trailers.  Careful that the visuals don’t hypnotize you into forgetting the story line. Hmm. Light versus Dark eternally.

Oh this Swedish vampire film takes the entire cake-walk in my movie book list. I have not seen the American remake.  Usually American remakes of great foreign films are very disappointing. Though I have heard this time around it’s not. But, if I’m going to watch a film more than once, well, I’ll Let the Right One In be the best one.

For now, I conclude with the music of the man who headlined my theme choice, Warren Zevon, with his musical rendition of the horror of the ghosts of  war-zones everywhere.

Oh yeah, you WANT to catch Willow’s Screaming post before it bites you.  I had no idea Annie Lennox ‘did’ vampires. Then again what do you want from a Woman who can sing for a Man the way only Annie can.  Oh and yes, True Blood will be joining Being Human for creep fixes.

You want MUSIC? Bearspawprint has it in spades. I think The Bear has been saving up for this theme. Yes, I do indeed. She’s been collecting all sorts of sound and sight goodies in her swamplands.

Okay, I dare anyone to find a theme for which Johnny can NOT find an R.E.M. song.  Seriously, he pulls one out of his musical vaults every time.  It’s great.

Ha! Deborah really got into the SWING of this Hallow Eves Theme wonderfully. She got dance fun galore with beauty, grace and a hell of a lot talented folks from The Corpse Bride to Labyrinth with the Boy Bowie. Oh yeah!

Silk Road Travelers

In Kansas City’s urban heart, no, not where all the fussed about fountains flow, but down on Delaware near the City Market is an oasis in the urban jungle called Silk Road Travelers–complete with the delightful incarnation of loving kindness the dog/wolf Blue. Saying that this is a shop dealing in “Antique and Vintage Asian Furniture and Accessories” is just scratching the surface of the shop that entices one into another culture and time with everthing from its soon to be green dragon overhead vent to its wooden flute music. And the black and white photographs are incredible testimonies to what digital photography cannot yet accomplish. This is not a warehouse of stacked stock but an entre into a comfortable home-like atmosphere where classes in Beginning Chinese and tea preparation are offered. Pamela Johnson and Robert Eppes have brought another facet of history to the “Historic River Market Area” with their own personal experiences of life in Shanghai. Harmony, peace, and beauty converge inside Silk Road Travelers. It’s well worth a visit to the Market for discovering another of Kansas City’s unexpected treasures.  www.silkroadtravelers.com
