Calling All Film Lovers: SOS–Save the Tivoli!

Click on the poster above to visit the Kickstarter page for Save The Tivoli.

Love your local independent theatre or lose it fast. The Tivoli theatre MUST go digital by or go dark because the industry demands it.  Even though everything works just fine, some folks need to make more dimes by forcing new techno toys on everyone else. Jerry Harrington explains all on the Kickstarter video while giving a tour of this wonderful film theatre treasure in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westport area.  This is a truly community based film theatre. Please help save it by sharing the news with others who support independent film and businesses.

Thank you,

Eva

from Tivoli Cinemas in Westport’s weekly newsletter:

Visiting SaveTheTivoli.com is the best way to learn why this happening and how our Kickstarter campaign works. It’s also an easy-to-remember web address that you can share with your friends and contacts.
For the latest news, please read our Kickstarter updates, or follow our posts on Facebook. You can also pick-up SAVE THE TIVOLI posters, buttons and postcards at the Donation Station in the Tivoli lobby, where you can also get answers to any questions you might have.

And, on behalf of all us at the Tivoli, thank you for your support
Jerry Harrington

This is the only place in town to see films like Muscle Shoals and Othello and Wadja and Nosferatu and opera and dance and…  Yeah, you name it and Jerry Harrington brings it to town like none other. It was the only place to Fruitvale Station and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Without the Tivoli it will be more chain store multiplex wasteland for film folks who want more than brain-dead humor and gore galore from the film industry.

Is Greece the canary in the mine for the end of western civilization as we know it? Who knows? Nigel Farage might.

And now for something completely different–Nigel Farage speaking in the European Parliament on the economic chaos in Greece. Caution! His words have implications far beyond the state of Greece. And yes, my fellow Americans, what’s happening in Greece matters to you. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But it will matter just like the dead canary in the coal mine mattered to miners when its silence and death signalled the presence of deadly gases. Just like being able to ignite tap water matters. Who drinks flaming water?  Just like the imprisonment of Tim DeChristopher matters for what it reveals about the nature of the legal system in America operating as a vehicle for political oppression.  All are signs of something going “wrong” in a very serious manner.  And if that doesn’t compel you to lend your ears to Farage’s little rant–then listen just for the entertainment factor. I think I’m developing a penchant for references to insane asylums. What’s that signify?

Much thanks to Berit for sending this delightful video my way.  Oh the joys of cyberspace!

The Ultimate Weapon–Our Wallets.

The time has come to wage war with our wallets as weapons. Yes folks, the only thing that any political entity in the USA has any respect for is money. The profit margin is the battleground for the unfolding economic-social-political class war.  Since money is what has been making the world go round according to the agendas of the corporate elite, then money can stop their greedy worlds from going round.  We are going to have to become very well-informed about who owns, manufactures, and sells everything we purchase so that we gain some control of how our money is used.  The growing efforts in Wisconsin for waging this sort of wallet warfare may provide everyone with a beginning playbook for what needs to be done in order for us to have a say in how we live and work. This goes beyond voting whenever there is an election. This involves how we live and work and play every day of our lives.  Every choice we make with our wallets becomes a vote, a political action. Here in lies a form of great collective power based upon informed choices every day. It will require mindfulness, will power and unity to be effective. Take note, there are more of “us” than there are of “them” aka the rich corporate elite.  We have the strength of numbers. Now, the question is, do we have the strength of conviction to act for the long-term? Our actions will impact our children’s lives, the environment, and the state of the rest of the world.

Money Talk @ "Concerned Madison Parent" 2011

What? No “Happy Meals” for Egypt’s children?! Why not?!

Here are some facts worth some serious contemplation separately and together. Though, according to recent PEW Research at least 50% of Americans are entirely clueless about events in Egypt. So if you’re an American who has fallen into that dark hole of the 50% who think what goes on in Egypt is none of your concern–well, you are excused from completing this reading assignment. Heads up though,  a wake up call will come soon enough because of the way money flows around the globe.

CNN Money report: “About 40% of Egypt’s citizens live on less than $2 a day….”

I don’t think you can purchase a fast food “Happy Meal” in the states for less than $2.50 without tax. That’s one junk food meal, complete with a toy, for one tiny tot being conditioned to explode into obesity with continued long term consumption of happy meal upgrades. You might be able to buy some cheap eggs and a very poor quality loaf of bread for approximately two dollars–before tax.

Politicol News Update 9 February 2011:  Mubarak family worth estimated at $90 Billion.

Egypt has a population of over 80 million.

Question: So who has has been experiencing the real economic crisis?

Enough said? Care to add something to the fact bowl?

Pink Floyd: Money

OOPS! What the *&^! ??? OOPS Our Way

OOPS! Another example of inaccurate information from the news source famous for misinformation, misrepresentation and–now-mis-location. OOPS! Who needs social studies classes? Where in the world IS Egypt???? Not “here”…..OOOPS!

Where in the world?

These are serious times, deadly serious times and yet–yet there are moments of sublime humor. Though the degree of sublimity depends upon your own individual subjective  sense of humor. Btw, if anyone is interested, there is a little town called Sublimity in Oregon. Really, I’ve been there. Sublimity has a beautiful park of OLD trees, a post office built in 1890 and a few cemeteries for your touring pleasure. Now back to the main menu:

Oh lordy, lordy, lordy! I first heard about Fox’s inability to find Egypt via KKFI radio–but I thought they were being sarcastic and facetious–until a friend shared the image. I just could not keep it all to myself. Have to share it with everyone else who missed this priceless piece of world news coverage.

Where’s a geography teacher when Fox News desperately needs one? Mapquest anyone? Got a 3D globe? Rand McNally wall map? Hey, they only report “news”, right? What do we expect from journalists? Who needs geographic accuracy? Might be useful for a “smart bomb” programmer—or not. Just send out the drones.

Oh hey, ABC is on the ball–or the “CAN” as in this case.  Yes, if you haven’t had the dubious pleasure of tear gas in person, this is its package. complete with Made in the USA.   Click the can to read more news coverage–American style. OOPS! WE make this stuff? Export it? Our economy needs some  serious greening from the looks of things.

ABC: Made in America

OOPS! And a major OOOOUCH! to everyone enjoying unemployment in America.  What can one billion American dollars buy? Depends on where you’re spending it. It could house a few people made homeless by the ongoing foreclosure crisis.  It  would buy A LOT of propane for folks on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota –which, btw,  contains  THE POOREST county in the USA–Ziebach. What would you spend a BILLION dollars on? According to Democracy Now! the American government has been “donating” at least a billion dollars a year to the Egyptian government for the last 30 years.  Click on the bundled buckeroos to learn more about this artwork–and view other visual aids.  You can visit Democracy Now! for more about what H. Clinton did and didn’t say about Egypt at http://www.democracynow.org/2011/1/27/egyptian_american_activist_hillary_clinton_forget

Visual Aid: One Billion American Dollars

Come on, don’t be shy–what would you do with a BILLION dollars every year?

Our Cemetery of dead hearts and minds = Black Friday

It’s Black Friday. I’ve always wondered about this concept. As a child I never quite understood the use of the color black in regard to this day. Sure, I’m fully aware that it refers to the economic books of  retailers getting into the black profit zone and out of the red. I comprehend that financial  concept and yet–yet especially today it’s irritating the hell out of me.  There’s no mystery here. I know  just why “Black Friday” is ticking me off royally–it reveals just how out of whack the dominant mainstream culture really is. It is a sign of ignorance–as in the lack of knowledge, lack of substance, lack of values, lack of integrity, lack of reality, lack of comprehension of what’s really necessary for living and living WELL.  All the people engaging in the vast consumer addiction game have their heads thrust so deep in the sand that it’s downright terrifying to behold.  American priorities are clear–this is a culture based on greed coming and going.  Don’t bother wasting time posting to tell me that I’m raining on everyone’s Christmas Parade. Why? Because  I think the Christmas Parade needs to END.  Why? Because it has NO meaning whatsoever as is clear from the current state of the world at large. Why in hell are people giving more money to corporations that have already posted record profits while ruining the global economy?  Engaging in this Parade is not only a denial of reality, it’s not just a moment of escapism for relief, it’s another sign of abdication of responsibility for the world in which we live.  Worse yet is the LIE it perpetuates.  Yes, the LIE, because how can people profess a desire for love, peace and sister/brotherhood while engaging in a system-game that destroys all these things?  Yes, it is Black Friday–but not in the financial sense—it is a day of mourning, the day of funeral pyres for a civilization that engages in perpetual wanton destruction of everyone’s environment, war, and hatred.   I’ve got a few notions about “door-busters” that have nothing to do with sale items.

Today on Democracy Now!, which usually airs at 8 am cst on KKFI, Amy Goodman interviewed two men with whom I found myself in nearly total agreement–IMAGINE THAT!!!—-author Derrick Jensen (The Dominant Culture is Killing the Planet) and economist and Right Livelihood Award Winner Chilean economist Manfred MaxNeef on Barefoot Economics.    Even if you might not find a lot of common ground with their thoughts, you might want to seriously consider what you agree and disagree with and WHY.  Yes, venturing over to read/view Goodman’s show for November 26 ought to provide anyone with lots of concepts to discuss with family and friends over the “holy days” feasts forthcoming.  Hate or love their ideas–but I doubt either will be boring.

This first video seems like a good way to create some awareness of the interconnectedness of all things.

Jensen’s interview reveals the depth and breadth of his scope of vision of our problem.  As stated earlier, you might not agree but it’s well worth your time to hear him out then thinking about why you don’t–or do–share common ground.

Clearly people are capable of unified action for a one day event. Doesn’t it follow that humans  are capable of unified action for more than one day if they really understood the stakes of this survival game? We need to do more than just turn off the lights for an hour.

Earth is an incredible planet. It is the only home we have. We do not own it. If anything Earth own us. Earth can exist without humans. Humans cannot exist  without Earth.  We cannot purchase another Earth.  The Universe does not conduct doorbuster sales.

Rise Up

Join the Plastic Death Dance Party!

Do you do the plastic or paper bag dance every time you venture into consumer-land America? Even though these little puffs of petroleum have had their toxic pedigrees read again and again they’re still EVERYWHERE.  Now–demand influences supply, right? So as I figure it–we can’t make the stores stop offering these death devils but we can stop taking them. Yes, you too can refuse taking another plastic bag –and feel so much better for doing so. It’s a small but important STAND against polluting our one and only environment. If you’ve got a ton of these ghost makers you can reuse them indefinitely. They are indestructible–chemically speaking.  You can bring your own cloth, paper or recycled bag–or box– to your favorite foraging haunts. Some stores in some states will reward you for this with a nickel pay credit.  Just say no to the Plastic Dance Party—cut the demand and stop the “supply.”  Stop the supply and production will cease due to loss of profit.  Yes, even at this level money talks.  Money always talks here in the states. So use it to talk back to those folks who aren’t paying any attention. Hit them in the profit margin–it’s the only thing ‘they’ value.  By changing what WE do in our daily lives is the main way We will create change we CAN believe in for the future.

Real time Avatar–Explore Amazon Watch

On artistatexito’s riverblog is a story being told and retold in so many ways everywhere. These are stories of wanton destruction of the Natural world to the view that human life is totally expendable in all the spheres in which politicians and profiteers strive to conquer and control everything and everyone  that opposes their greed driven agendas.  James Cameron’s film Avatar brought all sorts of people into the screenlands to see the big beautiful blue people confront the might of industrial development backed by military support. Who did you root for? Hmm? Is there anyone out there who did not want the beautiful blue people  to succeed in protecting their world from gross exploitation? Now imagine that the people are not big and blue and startling beautiful exotic beings but ordinary brown-skinned people who have been living in the rainforests all their lives.  Does their lack of intriguing  physical appearances change how we view the same conflict and issues?  Do we support them less because they are not creations of movieland but are flesh and blood human beings? Well such real people in Ecuador have been waging a legal war with the oil giant Chevron for over 17 years.  Other indigenous people have been and are currently engaged in similar struggles to protect their homes which have importance for the health of the entire Earth. Is everyone and everything expendable for profit? If you’re thinking so what am I supposed to do? I’m just one person with no connections to anyone important. Well we are all important. We are all connected. One thing we call all do is share information. Knowledge is power.  The more of us who are aware and know what’s happening–the more difficult it becomes for the insanity to continue. We can imagine better ways of living in which everyone and every living thing WINS! The way things have been and are does NOT have to continue.  Person by person we are those who dream, imagine and can create wonderful new ways to live.  We begin by supporting each other through awareness, tolerance and mutual respect. We can support each other by sharing knowledge.

Oil is a limited resource. We must cease being dependent upon it.  The video from Amazon Watch is direct and to the point.

We are all connected. We are all related.

Quack Eggs Discovered During Food Foraging at Local Farmers’ Market

Yes,  there are places to find food other than huge grocery stores housing tons of packaged processed products. Yesterday I visited one in a nearby parking lot and found something not available in any local corporate operated grocery store–Duck Eggs. Yes, Duck Eggs.  Eggs are one of the foods most taken for granted. People are generally unaware of the horrid boxed living conditions of chickens that produce eggs for many major commerical providers. Say ‘chicken’ and ‘hen’ and images of crowing roosters flustering finicky hens around a quaint barnyardd come to mind. Well, unless you’re buying eggs from a cage free chicken keeper supporting free range egg layers nothing could be further from the truth.  But the hideous lives of corporately raised animals for food consumption is not the issue at hand.  At the moment it’s buying food from local producers.  As for moi, since I can not consume chickens I also avoid consuming their unhatched offspring.  It’s called an allergy–one of many. It’s been a blessing in disguise.  It has forced me to read food labels since long before activists started demanding for informative ingredients lists.  Now view my discovery of Duck Eggs from the vantage point of someone who can not eat chicken eggs and you’ll get some notion of my glee regarding eggs of ducks.  Immediately I purchased a carton of these non-standard sized duck shells. They’re not uniformly sized but they’re huge compared to even jumbo chickie eggies.  I couldn’t wait to fry a couple and taste test them. They did not disappoint with their good strong flavor, lots of yummy yolk for whole wheat toast to soak up, and beautiful orange hued yolks.  Delicious. Yes, absolutely delicious were these Duck Eggs. They were so delicious that in the evening I whipped up a couple more for a dinner omelet complete with spinach, mushrooms, onions, cheddar cheese and ham (sadly, not Krakus ham).  Several Duck Eggs are slated for poaching today. My supply is steadily disappearing down my gullet.  But I know where to get more–as long as Rachel’s freely wandering ducks aren’t vaporized in this broiling pan of midwestern heat.  If you’re foraging for locally produced foodstuffs in the Kansas City Metro area you can taste test her cage free duck, and chicken, eggs for yourself. Just discover Rachel Helman at the Wednesday/Saturday Farmers’ Market in Liberty, MO.  Contact can also be made via www.TalynShears.com  or  816.264.2787
