Some “Real News” about New Brunswick and the people opposed to fracking.

It’s Saturday morning.

noreplyfromthisaddre

I wish all confusion was so amusing.

Lots of folks are confused about a lot of things like climate change and fracking. A great deal of this confusion has been-man made by industries interested in profits by all the usual means and then some. Hmm.  Yes, people who have vested interests in making money are very good at marketing their game plans. They are experts at spin and illusion and delusion all in order to create more confusion which keeps people from doing anything about anything.  They are very happy when people adhere to: Go play nice with your five hundred channels on the plasma screen flat tv taking up half the wall space in your living room.

Living room. Hmm. Just for a moment consider the word living and if that’s what anyone who is captivated by hours and hours of advertising and junk-food for the mind is really doing.  Is that living? Hmm. Sure, I guess as long as you’re eating, breathing, sleeping and watching television in some form, technically you’re alive and living. Oops, getting distracted here. Need to stay on track.

Confused? Okay. No problem. I make no promises to clarify anything. But I am happy to stir the pot.  I’m not a scientist. But I can read, write and surf cyber-space okay.  And without further ado let’s meet some people from New Brunswick compliments of The Real News.

http://www.democracynow.org – Scientists are warning that the controversial practice of natural gas hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, may lead to far more powerful earthquakes than previously thought. Fracking injects millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals deep into the earth in order to break up shale rock and release natural gas. A new study published Thursday in the journal Science by a leading seismology lab warns that pumping water underground can induce dangerous earthquakes, even in regions not otherwise prone to tremors. The new report comes as Academy-Award-nominated director Josh Fox has released the sequel to his highly acclaimed documentary “Gasland,” which sparked a national discussion on fracking. The new film, “Gasland, Part 2” exposes how the gas industry and the government’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is highly suspect. He also discusses how drilling companies have admitted to having several former military psychological operations, or “psyops” specialists on staff, applying their skills in Pennsylvania to counter opponents of drilling. “What’s really disappointing about this is that this is a moment, when an American president has come forward and spoken about climate change, and exhibited his obvious and earnest desire to take on the problem, however, the emphasis on frack gas makes this plan entirely the wrong plan,” says Fox, noting that methane released from fracking sites is more potent than other greenhouse gases. “Moving from coal to frack gas doesn’t give you any climate benefit at all. So the plan should be about how we’re moving off of fossil fuels and onto alternate energy.”

‘White Water, Black Gold’ shows there is more energy in our world than dirty oil. What are we waiting for when clean energy already exists?

View entire film on Eco Watch http://ecowatch.org/2013/white-water-black-gold/

Eco Watch featured David Lavallee’s very accessible film White Water, Black Gold  and I could not resist sharing after viewing it online.  It does more than bring the toxic waste of Canada’s Tar Sands into view because it also presents some clean green alternatives that are already being successfully utilized not just in Germany, but ironically in Canada as well. What are the rest of us waiting for? For the Big Oil Companies to milk out all the profits possible while creating waste toxic waste dumps that destroy fresh water all living things depend upon for life? We cannot drink oil. Oil cannot make food crops grow.  Plants need water. No wheat crop means no bread.

Make no mistake that Big Oil and corporations like Monsanto do not comprehend the situation despite their public relations denial spins. They do indeed and they want to use it to serve their own ends. There are reasons that Monsanto wants to patent all seeds for their own profit. There are reasons some Americans are NOT allowed to “catch” rainwater in barrels for gardening. The reasons are profits for those who want to control all the natural resources that are basic to all forms of life. If ducks could pay taxes then they’d be taxed for swimming in ponds. Deer would be taxed for eating plants. Wolves would be taxed just for being alive. I suspect the predatory human population feels an innate threat from wolves who don’t care for domestication by humans as dogs do.  Wolves don’t need or want us humans.  I don’t wonder why not. Perhaps it’s their independence which has set off the curent war on their very existence in the states. Could be. Wolves don’t give a damn about the corporate human economy.  They’re bound only by the laws of nature. Oh, come to think of it, so are humans. Because in the end–it will be natural law which decides the survival of our species.  It’s about time we all came to terms with that reality.  Denial will not change outcome.

Gee, it appears I’ve gotten off the Tar Sands water usage and energy alternatives track of White Water, Black Gold.  It may appear so. But since everything is connected–and we are all ‘related’–then I haven’t really gone off track. I’ve just followed a stream of thought. Continuing downstream . . . .

What this boils down to is values.  Yes, what do we value? Our lives? All living things? Clean air? Clean water? Oil? Gas? Our oil dependent modes of transportation? What matters most to each of us? Why should each of us consider such questions? Because we’re the ones who will either change our ways for the betterment of all living things or we won’t. Whatever the politicians and corporations do amounts to their choices. We are responsible for ours, what we think, what we do, what we say. Does the state of the Earth reflect our values or those of someone else? Positive change is possible. We can make it. We may have to work very hard for it though. What are we waiting for?

I think we need to do more than get the President of the United States to shut down the Keystone Pipeline. The Tar Sands in Canada need to be shut down. Big Oil needs to be shut down everywhere.  It’s time for a healthy change.

Tar Sands Oil for Everyone!? Oops, there spills another pipeline….

Democracy Now! coverage of the July 7, 2011 Exxon Yellowstone Pipeline.

Keystone 1 has spilled 12 times already. Shall we add  another Keystone Pipeline and double the spills?

Oh and I have yet to learn any more about that conflict of interest issue running amok in an earlier post about TransCanada and who is running the public hearings on the Keystone XL Pipeline.  Having attended the public hearing in Topeka it seems that people who support the pipeline there just want one thing–JOBS. Considering the fact that pipeline has already been laid in Kansas I fail to comprehend the logic of those claiming the construction of  XL will bring thousands of  long-term jobs into Toto-land. But, after all, Kansas is Kansas.

Why Clean Energy Now? Because Earth is Alive!

And it’s up to US to clean up OUR mess. Yes, it’s our responsibility to live as lightly upon Earth as we possibly can. We’ve got to do better than we have so far. 350 carbon emissions is a memory. We’re at 393 and rising. If we don’t stop ourselves from killing Earth no one else will. I’m not counting on aliens from outer space arriving in time to save us from ourselves. I’m not counting on some divine power intervening to spank us and put us on the right path. We’ve got to count on ourselves. WE’ve got to do the right thing or perish. And perish we will when the air, water and soil no longer support life on Earth. None of us can do everything, but we each can do all we can as soon as possible. Demand clean energy not more dirty oil. Germany is leading the world with shutting down nuclear power plants after learning from the ongoing disaster in Japan. Germany is going solar and wind. Why can’t the United States learn too? What are we waiting for? Extinction?

Much thanks to Diane Smiling Wolf Beaty for sharing this video on facebook—oh yeah, fb is good for more than silly chatter.

It’s Tar Sands time, folks. Seriously: Demand NO KEYSTONE PIPELINE and I do mean DEMAND the “NO” from Obama.

Oh, yes, I’m “back” motivated by the ongoing protests in front of the White House to protest the insane Keystone Pipeline. Obama has the power to put an END to this oil greed driven piece of environmental disaster. Will the man of “hope and change” pay any attention from his vacation spot on Martha’s Vineyard? Cynically I have BIG DOUBTS that he’ll do the right thing and just say NO to Big Oil. BUT–in solidarity with all the people willing to get arrested to make a point about this very very very BAD pipeline to devour the Tar Sands oil and ship it to—TEXAS from Canada–I’m speaking out and spreading the word as best I can. No wonder some friends are NOT responding to my emails. LOL. Hey, I understand, who wants to wrap their heads around yet ANOTHER Oil Disaster? Considering the ongoing mess of BP killing the Gulf of Mexico I expect intelligent, caring people to be a tad shell-shocked by what Big Oil does in the name of GREED.  Exxon posted the largest profits in the history of our sort of profits in history. THEY don’t need more money. WE all NEED a clean EARTH.  Okay, no photos. No links. No pretty pictures. Just words. I can’t be in DC to join the protests. If I could, I would. Why? Because this is IMPORTANT! Really, really important. Amy Goodman and Keith Olbermann interviewed Bill Mckibben of 350.org (Btw, we’ve gotten to 390 and that’s NOT a good thing.) finally putting some  media focus on the protests that will continue for two weeks. Oh and there was an important piece in some important newspaper…AFTER coverage on Democracy Now! by Amy Goodman. If you haven’t figured out by now that we must transition to clean energy and save the Earth, I don’t know what I or anyone else can say to get your mind around the notion.  Frankly, considering the evolving mess on this planet, I sure wish I did NOT have children who will have to deal with the consequences of our actions–and inactions in the near future. Curious? Wondering what I’m whining about? Then get busy and google the hell out of  the Tar Sands, Keystone Pipeline, Canada, Oil Spill in Montana, Democracy Now! and whatever else gets your mental motors running. Knowledge is a powerful thing. Pay it forward.

Not ready to become extinct? Save Earth, Demand Oceans Without Oil and Clean Energy ASAP.

Earth Day approaches. What does that mean in the United States? Nothing as far as I can tell at this point in time. We are doing absolutely nothing to deal with climate change.  We’re doing almost nothing to protect the natural world we live in. Many are still in denial thanks to the misinformation efforts of the likes of the nefarious Koch Brothers—and their more invisible cohorts.  Think confronting climate change is overwhelming? Then consider the extinction of humans as a result of our own actions.

"Holy Water" @ eva wojcik

It’s been one year since BP’s destruction of the Gulf of Mexico environment commenced.  Dolphins, fish, turtles and people continue to sicken and die.  The oil and chemicals used to make it invisible continue to destroy the viability of the water environment. BP continues to do as it pleases and spins its image as best it can. Oil companies posted record PROFITS. Who gave them this profit money? We did. We do every time we purchase gasoline.

What can each of us do? We can demand clean energy. We can change our own individual lifestyles regarding our energy. Use less oil. Use less gasoline. Conserve, use public transportation, walk, ride bikes instead of buying more SUVs. Oh yes, I see gas guzzlers every time I venture outside. A lot of people clearly don’t give a damn as long as they’ve got the money for gas at the pump. Get informed, get educated about the need for a healthy Earth for every living thing.

Our government clearly does not give a damn about the Earth. Corporations clearly do not take any responsibility for their polluting actions that destroy the environment.

Do we care? Do we?

I do not want any offshore drilling here.

"touching" @ eva wojcik

It’s time to think of doing things other than “Drill, baby, drill.” It’s time to CHANGE—and we’ve got to do it. No one else will. Follow Tim DeChristopher’s example and don’t wait for someone else to appear and lead. No one is coming. It’s up to us. Every single one of us, because we all live on the same Earth.  It’s time to take responsibility any and every way we each  can. It’s time to confront the reality of the destruction of our environment no matter how much it “hurts.” Adapt, change, transform or die.  Earth’s day is every day.

Bear Butte Oil Drilling: Urgent request for Public Written Comments ASAP!

re- public comments on Bear Butte Oil Well drilling due now. Urgent!

Dear Defenders,

Public written comments are due by March 30th for a rehearing on Oil Well Drilling near Bear Butte.

Approximately one and one-half miles west of Bear Butte, the SD Board of Minerals and Environment approved of Oil and Gas Order No. 17-2010 for Nakota Energy LLC.  However, they did not do a review according to South Dakota Historic Preservation laws.  Bear Butte has National Historic Landmark designation as well as being a sacred site to many Native American nations from North and Central America.

Please send your written comments to  SD DENR, Oil and Gas Supervisor Fred Steece at fred.steece@state.sd.us
and South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office, Jason Haug, State Historic Preservation Director at
Jason.Haug@state.sd.us

Another hearing, open to the public for verbal comments, will be held on Thursday, April 21, 2011, at 10:15 AM (CDT) at the Joe Foss Building, 523 East Capitol, Pierre, SD.

For more information go to the SD Department of Environment and Natural Resources website.

If each member of Defenders of the Black Hills sent in an email to Fred Steece and Jason Haug, the Board of Minerals would know how many people are concerned for this National Historic Landmark and sacred site.  As a National Historic Landmark, comments from all over the nation would have to be considered.

Let’s see if we can flood DENR, Fred Steece, and Jason Haug with our comments.

Thank you.

Charmaine White Face, Coordinator
Defenders of the Black Hills
