“Fractured Land” ~ What Kind Of World Do You Want To Live In?

What kind of world do you want to live in? Hold that question in your mind for a time.

While searching for some up to date information regarding  a particular event, The Future Generations Ride,  I came across a great deal currently online in social media venues regarding very serious issue raising events of the past.  While sorting through the information overload I discovered a documentary film in the works, Fractured Land.  Then, for this post, I decided to switch gears to the present and the future because we are in the here and now. What we do, all of us, has ramifications for the future, our future and the future of life on Earth. Earth has not always been as we know it–full of automobiles, grocery stores, shopping centers offering all sorts of techie toys, synthetic clothing, and fast food. Contrary to the commercials on the small screen, life has not always revolved around purple pills, phones and plasma screen televisions offering surround sound and high-definition imaging.

What I haven’t quite figured out yet is, why we, as in a great many of us humans, not all of us, but enough of us to make an intensely negative impact on our habitat, have chosen to do so.  Why live like self-destructive maniacs when the Earth offers –offered– everything we need to survive as a species?  If you’ve got a perfect environment to live in, why go around destroying it? Often the answer is profit/money. Okay–but consider this, money in any form only has value because someone attributes value to it.  Paper money has no value in and of itself.  It only has value within the context that created it. (No, I’m not going to get into a hashing out of the federal reserve concepts and issues thereof. That’s not what this post s about.) In contrast, water has value in and of itself because it is necessary for life. Necessary.  Living things require water in order to live.  We don’t require money or gold bars in order to function as living creatures. Yes, we are indeed creatures, bio-chemical entities, just like the rest of the wonderful species on planet Earth.  If the adherents to the mainstream concept of living well–as in rich according to the specs of Wall Street and the World Bank–how do they propose to live at all when the water, air and land become too toxic to support humans?  How does that work? It doesn’t.  That’s basic life science, not my opinion.

Caleb Behn knows this–and as you’re well aware, he’s not alone.

“They’re Using The Water To Fracture The Bones Of Mother Earth.” — Caleb Behn

Award Winning Fractured Land Documentary Featuring Naomi Klein, MP Thomas Mulcair, Josh Fox, Maude Barlow, Bill McKibben, Wade Davis, Lillian Moyer, Terri Brown, Oscar Dennis and other powerful voices. ‘ “Fractured Land tells the story of Caleb Behn, an inspiring, young First Nations law student from northeast BC, working to defend his peoples’ land from some of the most intense industrial activity in the world.

Caleb is Eh-Cho Dene and Dunne Za/Cree from Treaty 8 country, the front lines for Canada’s biggest natural gas fracking operations. The swift proliferation of fracking, a controversial method of extracting natural gas, has had profound consequences for the water and the ability for his people to practice their traditional way of life.

Having recently finished law school, Caleb is among the first University of Victoria Law students granted the Concentration in Environmental Law and Sustainability. Prior to law school, he was the Oil & Gas Officer for the West Moberly First Nations and a Lands Manager for the Saulteau First Nations.

The film follows Caleb to places of largely unseen beauty from his traditional territories, where he’s fished and hunted moose his whole life, to Maori lands in New Zealand, where he sought to learn how Indigenous law could be blended with the current legal system in order to protect our sacred ecosystems.” Scheduled for release 2014 Spring Festival.

Never know what you’ll discover when you start connecting dots and surfing the energy lines in cyber-space. First I caught the photos on Supporting South Dakota Reservations Facebook page featuring the 38 Memorial Riders, then while exploring the latest entries I discovered the information on Fractured Land and then, and then. I think you get the idea.

Consider another question: What kind of world will the children living now have to live in?

The People of Pungesti Say “NO! Fracking!” ~ Chevron says, “F*&%! U! Fracking Is US!”

Lost?

Think Chevron + Ecuador= $19 Billion in Damages that Chevron refuses to pay.

For more interesting information about Chevron’s dealings with Indigenous people visit Amazon Watch http://amazonwatch.org/

Gee, I’m not wondering why the people of Pungesti are riled up about Chevron coming to frack in their farmlands.  Democracy Now! reported that Chevron had ceased operations as a result of Saturday’s protest–a protest that has been ongoing since October.  http://www.democracynow.org/2013/12/9/headlines#12911

But apparently Chevron, being Chevron, has started right back up–again.

According to IW, Industry Week, Chevron has resumed its fracking operation in Pungesti in spite of six weeks protest by hundreds of local people. Chevron has even managed to get policeman posted outside the homes of the villagers. I suppose that’s part of an effort to attempt prevent them from returning to their protest camp field. The usual things are being done to discourage the people from further protest–destruction of the on site protest camp, arrests and the tried and true ploy of, “Oh, look what we found. You are bad people.” Pick the illegal whatever object of your choice.

According to Investment Watch the people of Pungesti are now basically under house arrest.  http://investmentwatchblog.com/s-o-s-pungesti-romania-people-under-terror/

Yes, it is worth the effort to search the web for images in order to get a look at who is protesting in Pungesti—no, it’s not those crazy guys in black, it’s everyone from the grandmothers to the grandchildren.

Some “Real News” about New Brunswick and the people opposed to fracking.

It’s Saturday morning.

noreplyfromthisaddre

I wish all confusion was so amusing.

Lots of folks are confused about a lot of things like climate change and fracking. A great deal of this confusion has been-man made by industries interested in profits by all the usual means and then some. Hmm.  Yes, people who have vested interests in making money are very good at marketing their game plans. They are experts at spin and illusion and delusion all in order to create more confusion which keeps people from doing anything about anything.  They are very happy when people adhere to: Go play nice with your five hundred channels on the plasma screen flat tv taking up half the wall space in your living room.

Living room. Hmm. Just for a moment consider the word living and if that’s what anyone who is captivated by hours and hours of advertising and junk-food for the mind is really doing.  Is that living? Hmm. Sure, I guess as long as you’re eating, breathing, sleeping and watching television in some form, technically you’re alive and living. Oops, getting distracted here. Need to stay on track.

Confused? Okay. No problem. I make no promises to clarify anything. But I am happy to stir the pot.  I’m not a scientist. But I can read, write and surf cyber-space okay.  And without further ado let’s meet some people from New Brunswick compliments of The Real News.

The clip above was  Published on Jul 12, 2013

http://www.democracynow.org – Scientists are warning that the controversial practice of natural gas hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, may lead to far more powerful earthquakes than previously thought. Fracking injects millions of gallons of water, sand and chemicals deep into the earth in order to break up shale rock and release natural gas. A new study published Thursday in the journal Science by a leading seismology lab warns that pumping water underground can induce dangerous earthquakes, even in regions not otherwise prone to tremors. The new report comes as Academy-Award-nominated director Josh Fox has released the sequel to his highly acclaimed documentary “Gasland,” which sparked a national discussion on fracking. The new film, “Gasland, Part 2” exposes how the gas industry and the government’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is highly suspect. He also discusses how drilling companies have admitted to having several former military psychological operations, or “psyops” specialists on staff, applying their skills in Pennsylvania to counter opponents of drilling. “What’s really disappointing about this is that this is a moment, when an American president has come forward and spoken about climate change, and exhibited his obvious and earnest desire to take on the problem, however, the emphasis on frack gas makes this plan entirely the wrong plan,” says Fox, noting that methane released from fracking sites is more potent than other greenhouse gases. “Moving from coal to frack gas doesn’t give you any climate benefit at all. So the plan should be about how we’re moving off of fossil fuels and onto alternate energy.”

Is Greece the canary in the mine for the end of western civilization as we know it? Who knows? Nigel Farage might.

And now for something completely different–Nigel Farage speaking in the European Parliament on the economic chaos in Greece. Caution! His words have implications far beyond the state of Greece. And yes, my fellow Americans, what’s happening in Greece matters to you. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow. But it will matter just like the dead canary in the coal mine mattered to miners when its silence and death signalled the presence of deadly gases. Just like being able to ignite tap water matters. Who drinks flaming water?  Just like the imprisonment of Tim DeChristopher matters for what it reveals about the nature of the legal system in America operating as a vehicle for political oppression.  All are signs of something going “wrong” in a very serious manner.  And if that doesn’t compel you to lend your ears to Farage’s little rant–then listen just for the entertainment factor. I think I’m developing a penchant for references to insane asylums. What’s that signify?

Alert: Women of the Blood Nation blockade of Murphy Oil to Prevent Fracking!

Heather Milton Lightening reports that Blood Nation Women of the Kainai Earth Watch  have blocked the Murphy Oil Fracking site to prevent fracking.

Early tonight, numerous women from the Blood Nation have courageously parked in front of Murphy Oil’s fracking development site vowing not to move until plans of fracking for oil and gas are stopped. The women are part of the Kainai Earth Watch and have been active advocates to stop the fracking due to the major threat to human health, wildlife and livestock and the irreversible damage to the land and water on the Blood Reserve and surrounding areas. They feel this is the only choice left to them to stop the operations as plans for construction begin tomorrow.

In late 2010, Kainaiwa Resources Inc. (KRI) quietly signed off on a deal with the Calgary-based junior mining company Bowood Energy and the U.S. company Murphy Oil. In exchange for the $50 Million, Bowood Energy and Murphy Oil gained a five-year lease to roughly 129, 280 acres, almost half of the Blood’s reserve, for oil and gas exploration.

Since that time local residents of the Blood Nation and surrounding communities have come together to oppose the projects. Members of the KaiNai Earth Watch have partnered with numerous community groups, including the Lethbridge Council of Canadians, to host numerous educational workshops, organize petitions, and meet with government officials. Despite their efforts, nothing has been effective in actually preventing the fracking from going ahead.

Plans of construction on 4 new fracking sites begin tomorrow. The women have vowed not to leave until they are confident the fracking won’t go ahead.

FYI, be prepared to dial, dial and redial.  You might want to get a head start on this action. There are volunteers waiting to hear your words. I think they ought to be PAID for their time and energy.  Or some UN-employed person searching for work ought to be PAID to answer the White House phones.

Go forth and frack no more!

Inside Job–>>Fraud with Impunity destroys America

While I admit routing hard for the documentary film “Gasland” for the Oscar–by no means am I disappointed in the win by the incredible “Inside Job”.  It gives new, hard, and extremely painful meaning to “Follow the Money.” Yes, follow the money, the profits, to realize the full extent of the fraud committed upon the American people at large–excluding all the elite corporate personhoods with political agendas they know they ought to keep secret in order to keep working class people ignorant and manipulated by their corporate owned media. Heads up, the elite rich do NOT share the same values, dreams, needs and outlook as working class Americans.  The elite rich have only one agenda –Massive PROFITs at any cost. And the rest of “us” be damned.

Just in case you haven’t heard of Fracking…

Why is China working on solar and wind energy development but America is NOT???? Frankly, I’ve got to admire any film that rouses the oil industry to try to get it disqualified from Oscar consideration. There’s a reason for that sort of effort–and it’s not “nice.”

Gee, do you detect a common thread to recent political events in Wisconsin and industrial invests? Follow, follow the money brick road around the globe.

Slp’s “no fracking way” and “Plant for the Planet”

“no fracking way” by Charles aka slpmartin at Read Between the Minds

This is for those of you who don’t venture over to slpmartin’s poetry casa due to the crowds–or because poetry is not your usual dish of choice. If you click on the image you can wander in and listen to Charles’ audio version–and explore more of his poem craft.  A while back I posted about fracking and the film Gasland. Just recently BigSurKate also posted about fracking.  Then Charles served up this wonderful image and poem and I just had to share it with folks. Fracking is another absolutely insane thing being done to Earth–and many people do not even associate the word with an operation that destroys water supplies. Yes, it does result in water that you can light on fire.  I wonder if a close encounter with some fracked water would clear some profit minded brainpans? Hm…a little late to share at Cancun–another miserable failure to seriously address environmental issues from the looks of it. There’s some interesting coverage of Cancun at www.democracynow.org  and Al Jazeera English.  Like what? Like the children from around the world striving to plant a million trees in every country in order to reduce Carbon emmission content. Yep, it’s the brainchild of a 10 year old German boy. Don’t laugh. He’s accomplished the goal in Germany. The project is “Plant  for the Planet.”  Someone has their priorities in the proper order–and it’s not the leaders of the so called “Free” world. No, it’s the children and the Indigenous people as far as I can tell. They’re the folks invested in saving the Earth.  And they’re not crippled by addictions to profit motives. When the islands you live on are disappearing as you watch, things besides making money become very important.

What are we going to do????

note: Much thanks to Charles aka slpmartin for permission to re-post his poetry and image.
