A Few Cues For Johnny and other ‘blocked’ writers. Some perhaps dubious, but all used.

The other day Johnny wrote about his writing frustrations and people very kindly offered his all sorts of suggestions. I got a tad carried away with mine. But, it made me laugh for a lot of reasons, including the fact that I had gotten carried away with my response,  not the least being that I’ve done all of it and then some more. What makes me laugh is pretty darn scarce these days so I thought it’s only fair to share my glee. Though I am well aware that what tickles me, may not tickle thee.

Without further ado, here are a few of the writing unblocking things I do:
Yep, there are other books to soak up the flow from other writers.

Naps can be great–especially if they get you daydreaming.
Then there’s the walking fest, the way over 60 drive down the highway, dancing, vegging out with a movie marathon, baking a boatload of cookies you like to eat right out of the oven.

There’s free-writing–as long as you’re comfortable with whatever spills out of your brainpan–and I do mean COMFORTABLE.

There’s also negative motivation–like calling someone who loves to talk and talk and talk and all you can do is listen for as long as you can take it. Afterwards your words just have to escape. Usually.

Watching a really bad movie or reading book trash until you start yelling “I CAN do better than this!” Generally one does. Do better that is.

You could see how much storytelling your four-year old will endure of you making it up on the fly.

A trip to the local humane society –yep all those desolate cats and dogs with stories and stories in their eyes—you get where that’s going, don’t you?

OH, and there’s always the mind junk news media to rant and vent at. Get’s your grey matter in a groove you might be able to use.

Brows a bookstore or library for books you don’t like. Tell them why you don’t like them.

Last ditch effort–watch daytime television. Not cable. I mean just what’s on the local stations that fill your idiot box with buy! buy! buy! in between snippets of soapy operas, game shows and other oddities. This is reverse psycho reactionary method. It can backfire in bad ways so use with extreme caution.

Speaking of extreme caution–blow up some fireworks. Not in very dry areas, of course. Some boom! booms! can rattle your cage into doing all sorts of interesting things. No, I’m not going to share.

There’s always the kiddie swings at the parks. To get your blood circulating as high as you can pump your legs.

At the opposite end there is deadly people watching from some vantage point where you can procure libations and body fuel.

Or, you could eat a lot of dark chocolate.
Am I helping yet?
Oops.

Breakfast Special, #31, “Mrs. Ling’s Office Supply Salvage Service at Your Disposal”

“Mrs. Ling’s Office Supply Salvage Service at Your Disposal”

*

*

DeeDee Ling was having another bonanza night regarding the treasures she was finding in nearly each and every office desk trash can on her floor this cleaning shift. This was her third red-letter trash find work shift this week. Usually the pickings were this good just maybe twice a month when payday rolled around for half the office workers. The neon green plastic recycle bag on her cart was overflowing with an abundance of reuseable office supplies running the gamut from several sheets of expensive high quality photography paper to a quarter full box of mini staples to the opened but full box of letter sized envelopes discarded, according to the writing on the box, since it could not be returned for a box of the desired envelopes because it was now a discontinued item.

DeeDee figured this was the universe’s way of repaying her for doing Rosa a good turn by letting her use the office machine she’d salvaged from the trash in order to make copies of the pages of a little grey book. Her own little home office supply shelves had been in serious need of replenishing on the day Rosa had come round asking about what her machine could do. Every work shift since Rosa’s visit had bought all sorts of excellent goodies DeeDee’s way. Her home office shelves were not only fully restocked with items salvaged from the office building’s trash bins, but there was overflow as well, an heretofore unknown state of affairs in her little workroom.

To insure more of this good fortune, DeeDee was giving serious consideration to the notion that it might be a good idea to inform Rosa that she was quite willing to provide any typing or other office service, including the use of the very versatile machine, for Rosa at no charge whenever she had need of it.  Finding not one, but two nearly full postage stamp dispensers, in the trash cans of two different offices, clinched the free deals for Rosa idea. Discovering unused stamps in the trash was as good as finding money straight up in DeeDee Ling’s mind. Two nearly full rolls inside two dispensers, one whose plastic casing had cracked in such a manner that prevented easy dispensing and removal of the roll, and the other one perfectly sound, giving DeeDee reason to think that it might simply have been the causality of some mindless autopilot desk cleaning, sealed the deal for her decision to provide Rosa with unlimited services and supplies. After all, there were nearly two hundred dollars in postage stamps sitting snug and neatly rolled inside a couple of cheap plastic holders. If this treasure find wasn’t a direct result of kindly sharing salvaged resources with neighborhood friends, then DeeDee Ling didn’t know what was.

*

*

Little did DeeDee know that this line of reasoning was not only going to bring her considerably more good fortune in diverse and unexpected forms, but would also provide her with a great deal of personal entertainment and vindication while doing Rosa a favor. She would have the means to create what she deemed an appropriate vehichle for exacting more than a tad of personal revenge for a certain sort of rampant bigotry expressed via questionable humor running amok amongst the people who occupied the offices from nine to five pm daily Monday through Friday. While it was clear to Mrs. Ling that not everyone on the fifth floor found the crass stereotypical Asian cartoons and jokes amusing, she deduced from the prominent display for sharing and commentary in many offices that the majority of the employees were indeed heartily amused at the expense of her own cultural heritage. Her offended sensibilities would soon prompt her to quite willingly join Rosa in a little spontaneous brainstorming session involving more than the trash can resources at her fingertips five nights a week: copy machines, bulk postage mail codes, access to the outgoing mail depository, typewriters, and a few other handy office gadgets that were no worse for the wear after a little night shift break time employment.

In return, one of the boys in Rosa’s care drew a cartoon in line with DeeDee’s thinking regarding the base nature of bigots everywhere. DeeDee supplied the cutting satiric caption herself after receiving Miguel’s more than adequate artistic interpretation of her desired images.  Another sort of payload arrived on the day the fusebox in her building blew thereby alerting everyone to the presence of over a foot of icy cold water in the basement. Not only had the very tall white man Rosa sent to deal with the blown fusebox fixed that longstanding problem, but he’d put the leaking water pipes to rights and then managed to get the water draining out of the basement using several garden hoses Mr. Ling borrowed from the neighbors. All he requested in return for his time and labor was the recipe for her favorite cookie. Mrs. Ling made him a copy in under ten seconds then taped it to the Tupperware container stuffed full of her very own special Szechuan Shrimp Lo Mein which he accepted with a surprised smile and a rather becoming streak of blush on his cheeks. Mrs. Ling did not waste any time debating about sharing the information that the services of a new gringo handyman in the neighborhood could be had for a very modest trade fee of shrimp and a recipe song.

Breakfast Special #32 https://47whitebuffalo.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/breakfast-special-32-hidden-talents-2/

Myths, more myths and music everywhere! What’s a meandering mind like mine to make of it all?

Deer Bear, about this myth music theme . . .

Yeah, the places I have been with on this theme journey. Forewarning, some of the unexpected creations I’ve discovered during this fishing expedition will be coming to these blogcasa pages very soon.  Very interesting things are going on in creative minds everywhere. Oh yes indeed. Some are very scary.  Now, on with this show:

*

Medusa Trailer  — Take note, this is a ‘myth’ of a trailer for a film that does not exist. I learned that from the comments section.   What cheek! Myth = movie myth. How deliciously quaint! Something created out of nothing to serve a purpose. I think in this case to show the trailer making talents of Jee Suk Kim and Jaguar Lee.  Why else?

Something more modern regarding myths–and yet, so appropriate. Where do you ride your bicycle? What myths are you making?

Beach house  “Myth”

Ryan Smith upload

Lyrics:

http://www.myspace.com/beachhousemusic

Drifting in and out, see the road you’re on
You came rolling down the cheek
Say just what you need
And in between it’s never as it seems
Help me to make it
Help me to make it
If you build yourself a myth
Know just what to give
What comes after this
Momentarily bliss
Consequence of what you do to me
Help me to make it
Help me to make it
Found yourself in a new direction
Eons far from the sun
Can you come when they come to reach you
Let you know you’re not the only one
Can’t keep hanging on
To all that’s dead and gone
If you build yourself a myth
Know just what to give
Do you lies
We’ll let the ashes fly
Help me to make it
Help me to make it

Beach House performs “Myth” on the Letterman Show May 18th, 2012.  I’ve decided to add this version because I’ve never heard of this group before and some visuals might help other folks too. I wonder why he takes his shoes off? Perhaps because they’re new? Hmm.

Polish Myth Dispelled

The Fisher King from Merlin Series Three, composed by James Gosling.  The king and the land are one and the search for the holy grail to heal them both when the kind is unwell. Hmm. Is there a holy grail for our times?  Perhaps it’s the need to reconnect to the web of life instead of thinking we’re ‘outside’ of it?

In Arthurian legend, the Fisher King, or the Wounded King, is the latest in a long line charged with keeping the Holy Grail. Versions of his story vary widely, but he is always wounded in the legs or groin and incapable of moving on his own. When he is injured, his kingdom suffers as he does, his impotence affecting the fertility of the land and reducing it to a barren Wasteland. Little is left for him to do but fish in the river near his castle Corbenic. Knights travel from many lands to heal the Fisher King, but only the chosen can accomplish the feat. This is Percival in earlier stories; in later versions, he is joined by Galahad and Bors.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_King

Merlin Series Three – Original Television Soundtrack is the official soundtrack to the third season of the BBC’s Merlin. All music is composed by Rob Lane, Rohan Stevenson, and James Gosling. Music is performed by the Slovak Symphony Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorus. Soprano solo by Kim Chandler and violin solo by Janice Graham.

Jethro Tull – Flying Dutchman – Music Video. This was a tough Tull choice. The photographs decided the issue for me.

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. The myth is likely to have originated from 17th-century nautical folklore. The oldest extant version dates to the late 18th century. Sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries reported the ship to be glowing with ghostly light. If hailed by another ship, the crew of the Flying Dutchman will try to send messages to land, or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Dutchman

James Padmore

I made this video because I love this song and it always made me think of these kind of images when I first listened to it.  The photographs were taken by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, celebrated photographer from Whitby (Yorkshire, England).  I hope you enjoy the video. Please leave comments.  Thanks.

I selected this because of the song lyrics. If anyone finds a ‘gentler on the ears’ version, please share it.

The Sword – Lament For The Auroch [ Age Of Winters ]

Lyrics:
Laboring in the liquid light of Leviathan
Spectres swarm around the sunken cities of the
Saurians
Rising up from the void through the blackness of
eternal night
Colossus of the deep comes crashing down with cosmic
mightAnd none may see again the shimmering of Avalon
Or know the fates of all the races man has cursed
Long gone are the ages of the Alchemists
Now there are none who know the secrets of the EarthHarken to the howl of the huntsman’s hounds
Or the clarion of kingdoms doomed and drowned
Lost to these lands is lore of the high ones
Sunless skies await the return of hte ArchonsLament the passing of the Auroch
And the slaying of the ancient wyrm
Would you dare to meet the gaze of the Basilisk
Or face the flames as the Phoenix burns? And none may see again the shimmering up of Avalon
Or know the fates of all the races man has cursed
Long gone are the ages of the alchemists
Blessed are those who keep the secrets of the earth
Lament the passing of the Auroch
And the slaying of the ancient wyrm
Would you dare to meet the gaze of the Basilisk
Or face the flames as the Phoenix burns?.*This is my homage to the standard myth concept.  I enjoyed the presentation of the story with the music overlaying it.  Yep, my picks are based on what tripped my trap along the way.The Legend of Osiris

Oh now here we go with some of that OLD OLD OLD time religion indeed. The goddess of war appears in many forms across cultures.  I couldn’t find something I really liked–yet–for a particular ancient Irish hero sooooooo, here’s Omnia’s rendition of the Crone of War.

Omnia ~ The Morrigan ~ Live Religion  —- Perhaps this should be Drone of War? Or perhaps the drones are just our incarnations of the crones?

MuddahNatur

The Morrígan is a figure from Irish mythology. She is a goddess of battle, strife, and sovereignty.
LYRICS

Over hills and over meadows
see the crow fly, feel her shadow
Over woods and over mountains
searching for a war

Her wings embrace each strife and battle
where swords they clash and chariots rattle
seeking out the one whose time
has come to take the blade

Morrigan ancient crone of war
I see your face, I’ll cry no more
Morrigan ancient crone of war
come lift me on your wings

Morrigan ancient crone of war
I hear your voice, I’ll breathe no more
Morrigan ancient crone of war
come set my spirit free

Kill for Morrigan
Maim for Morrigan
Fight for Morrigan
and you will
Slay for Morrigan
Die for Morrigan
Morrigan crone of war

Flash Mobs for Everyone! Let’s Sing and Swing!

Time for true confessions: the reason I picked this “Flash Mob” musical theme is because I got so carried away with willowdot21’s  “All Things Travel” theme that I could not resist continuing travelling around the world.  Blame the choice of Flash Mobs all on the “Ode to Joy” video which I’ve included here because it was the piece that sent me searching for mobs in places of transportation. Yes, you can travel the world via Flash Mobs everywhere. Some of them will even moon you. Yes, indeed, five guys and a fountain where it’s illegal to wade…yeah, I wonder if Bear, Willowdot21 or Johnny have selected that piece of young guy fun?  What I enjoy most about these Mobs are the expressions on those watching and those performing.
Enjoy, be careful with the mob from Moscow. Damn, I wonder what sort of a riot one hot guy with a boombox can incite if he were inclined to do so? LOL.
Imagine all the great music, fun and dancing everyone could be enjoying every day around the world if all the warmongering would just cease and desist. As Tracy Chapman sings: This could be heaven here on Earth.

Willowdot21, Bollywood selections are for you. 🙂

Parece que cuando se habla de un flashmob este tiene que ser un baile “improvisado” en una estación de tren, por lo que habrás visto este esquema una y otra vez, sin ninguna originalidad. Seas, Oceans and Everything There-of-in — Music Theme–With extras, because I can’t help myself.

Okay, I’m not sure I’ve quite stuck to Seas and Oceans and Everything There-of–but I’ve certainly had fun trying!  I’m sure anyone reading, and listening can add at least one selection that they WOULD have included above all others for such a serving. So, please don’t hold back. Don’t be shy. Post them on your blogs. Share them in the comments. Drop some links so the rest of us can visit and see what you think of when contemplating the seas and oceans of the ever incredible planet Earth. It’s the only home you’ve got. Love it or lose it.  Oops. Maybe that’s why the dolphin is ‘yelling.’ It was very tempting to go the pollution route with this post–but–I didn’t. We can sing that song all the time–unfortunately. I’m fairly certain the reason for each selection is self-evident. Heads up, the video from The Impossible is not for the squeamish — imagine a human body encountering all the debris from a huge wave of water moving inland–no body armor available. It’s quite a dramatic piece of film-craft in my opinion.

Links to Bearspawprint and Willowdot21–and whoever else decides to play along– will be forthcoming as they appear.

Whales Give Dolphins a Lift

American Museum of Natural History

Many species interact in the wild, most often as predator and prey. But recent encounters between humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins reveal a playful side to interspecies interaction. In two different locations in Hawaii, scientists watched as dolphins “rode” the heads of whales: the whales lifted the dolphins up and out of the water, and then the dolphins slid back down. The two species seemed to cooperate in the activity, and neither displayed signs of aggression or distress. Whales and dolphins in Hawaiian waters often interact, but playful social activity such as this is extremely rare between species. The latest Bio Bulletin from the Museum’s Science Bulletins program presents the first recorded examples of this type of behavior. Visitors to AMNH may view the video in the Hall of Biodiversity until February 9, 2012.

Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History. Find out more about Science Bulletins athttp://www.amnh.org/sciencebulletins/.

Fustercluck Blues Festival and Chicken Wing Eating Contest. From who else but~~ the Incredible one and only~ KKFI 90.1 fm Community Radio playing Blues dues out the wazoo!

O there ares soooo many public service announcements one can make! But seldom do they involve a whole lot of music and FUN! Now I’m no chicken eater ever, but if I was, then this little chicken wing eating contest with Blues on the side would definitely be on my tummy’s menu agenda. Oh yeah, KKFI is fundraising again with major Community Support–because, in case you don’t know already, that’s how KKFI has managed to stay alive on the sound waves for over twenty years–people put money in the radio jukebox cash jar of their own free will.  There’s no corporate backers, no media sponsors, just the music makers and the music lovers.  This is truly homegrown radio like you’ve never heard it before folks. It streams on the world-wide web 24/7 –>    http://www.kkfi.org/  .  It’s got volunteer DJs out the wazoo. It’s got a concrete 100,000 watts radius. It’s got indie and local music makers on air and on stage and on the money need feed bag all the time.  We got our Blues, smokin’ hot Jazz, Retro, Latino, Rock, Morning Buzzes M-F, Native Spirit on Sunday afternoon at 5pm with Rhonda LeValdo, Reggae and we even got damn fine L.A. Theatre Works. There’s even Chamber Music and Dr. Mike’s Old Timey Medicine Show. I’ve not even hinted at the Democracy Now! news, eco programs, Tell Somebody, local showcase, Mr. Bill, and Labor coverage.  Swing thru the link and check out The Program Schedule for what you may have a tough time finding anywhere else on one radio station but everywhere on KKFI  90.1 fm. Fuel for your hungry ears.  Now who among you has ever before heard of a Fustercluck Blues Festival featuring Wild Women, Junebugs, Bail Jumpers and Rhythm Kings and a chicken wing eating contest with two categories? Hmm? Come on, share and share alike amigas and amigos.

Another Type of Breakfast Special–Hot Chocolate Banana Burritos. Or are they tacos?

Compliments of Yi-Ching Lin

Who is up for a healthy chocolate high supreme? I AM! I AM! Actually dark chocolate gets me flying just thinking about it, but enough about that silliness.

What do you need?

-One banana sliced to suit you.

-One whole wheat tortilla.

-Enough butter to lightly cover the banana up side of the tortilla.

-As many Guittard real Semisweet Chocolate Chips as you can stand to eat after they melt. Careful, these Guittard chips melt as fast as butter does. These chippies melt in your mouth. I kid not. Other brands have NOTHING on Guittard’s Semisweet Chocolate. NOTHING! Which means you’re going to die and go straight to heaven with this breakfast special banana delight.

Okay here goes everything:
Heat your whole wheat tortilla on both sides until you can just put a very light coating of butter on the upside. While on low to medium heat toss down about half your desired portion of semisweet chips. Then cover half the tortilla with sliced bananas. Next throw down the rest of your semisweet yum yums. Shut off heat. Fold the half of tortilla sans bananas over the banana half. Carefully ‘flip’ over and let rest for about thirty seconds depending on your heat level and if you desire a crunchy crisp burrito or a soft serve one. Remove from pan. Devour once cool enough to not burn your fingers, lips, tongue or the roof your mouth.

Warning: Highly addictive.

Guittard Chocolate Company –>> http://www.guittard.com/
Yes, you want to discover Guittard Chocolate. OH yes you do. Indulge! Indulge!

It’s been pointed out to moi that folding the tortilla in half is more like a taco–hence, these would be chocolate banana tacos not burritos. Apparently rolling the tortilla would create a burrito. I’ve done both. Take your pick. It’s all very very yummy yummy in your tummy.

Visit Yi-Ching Lin’s Waking Up New blogcasa for more visual delights. 🙂 Careful also very addictive.
