City Music ~~

There are all kinds of tunes about urban landscapes.  A multitude of activities takes place within city landscapes. Everything is reflected in music in all genres.

Where would we be without some serious city angst?

Raining in Baltimore ~ The Counting Crows, August and Everything After  <<– A most excellent album with nary a ‘miss’ among any of its songs. Well worth listening to en toto.

Anyone in the market for some higher education history? Universities and colleges are small cities within cities and towns. Hence, the inclusion of Ohio.

In Kent, Ohio, Non-violent students encountered the National Guard’s fully loaded guns.

Mark Daniels

Kent State Shootings historical information including list of the dead and wounded:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings

The shootings led to protests on college campuses throughout the United States, and a student strike, causing more than 450 campuses across the country to close with both violent and non-violent demonstrations.[9] A common sentiment was expressed by students at New York University with a banner hung out of a window which read, “They Can’t Kill Us All.”[37] On May 8, eleven people were bayonetted at the University of New Mexico by the New Mexico National Guard in a confrontation with student protesters.[38] Also on May 8, an antiwar protest at New York’s Federal Hall held at least partly in reaction to the Kent State killings was met with a counter-rally of pro-Nixon construction workers (organized by Peter J. Brennan, later appointed U.S. Labor Secretary by President Nixon), resulting in the “Hard Hat Riot“.

Samba de Janeiro ~ Bellini —-Dancing in the streets aka it’s time for a flash mobbing to work out some stress. Yes, you too can dance at your pc. How can you resist?

Flash Mobs for Everyone! Let’s Sing and Swing!

Time for true confessions: the reason I picked this “Flash Mob” musical theme is because I got so carried away with willowdot21’s  “All Things Travel” theme that I could not resist continuing travelling around the world.  Blame the choice of Flash Mobs all on the “Ode to Joy” video which I’ve included here because it was the piece that sent me searching for mobs in places of transportation. Yes, you can travel the world via Flash Mobs everywhere. Some of them will even moon you. Yes, indeed, five guys and a fountain where it’s illegal to wade…yeah, I wonder if Bear, Willowdot21 or Johnny have selected that piece of young guy fun?  What I enjoy most about these Mobs are the expressions on those watching and those performing.
Enjoy, be careful with the mob from Moscow. Damn, I wonder what sort of a riot one hot guy with a boombox can incite if he were inclined to do so? LOL.
Imagine all the great music, fun and dancing everyone could be enjoying every day around the world if all the warmongering would just cease and desist. As Tracy Chapman sings: This could be heaven here on Earth.
~
Willowdot21, Bollywood selections are for you. 🙂

Parece que cuando se habla de un flashmob este tiene que ser un baile “improvisado” en una estación de tren, por lo que habrás visto este esquema una y otra vez, sin ninguna originalidad. Tibet:

“Tibetans  challenge XI Jinping – Gangnam Style.

Upload by   SFTHQ   http://www.youtube.com/user/SFTHQ?feature=watch

Published on Nov 7, 2012

On the eve of the CCP’s 18th Party Congress, Students for a Free Tibet and the International Tibet Network release a parody video titled “Tibetans challenge Xi Jinping – Gangnam Style.” A takeoff of Korean star Psy’s uber-popular Gangnam Style, the video features China’s heir apparent as a dimwit — a big-headed oaf whose only response to Tibetans’ growing resistance is to arrest, beat and torture protestors. But Xi — like the four generations of undemocratic CCP heads before him — cannot stop Tibetans who are moving beyond fear and challenging the very foundations of Chinese rule in Tibet. Ultimately, the joke is on Xi Jinping, the soon to be leader of the unfree world and a remnant of authoritarian rulers of the past. Xi: Resolve the Tibet crisis now or Tibet will soon become your biggest headache.

Join Tibet’s Xi Challenge:
http://www.xijinping-tibetchallenge.org/

About the making of this video: Using the power of humor and theater, this video highlights the cruelty and absurdity of the Chinese government’s colonial policies in Tibet that have driven 63 Tibetans to set themselves on fire in protest of Chinese rule; 50 this year alone. It also depicts some of the creative protest tactics being used by Tibetans to challenge China’s occupation, including a 2011 boycott of Chinese vegetable vendors. This video will be banned in China and Tibet but Beijing’s censors cannot stop the truth from spreading: Xi Jinping, China’s 5th generation leader will be the last to rule Tibet. Above all, this video is a call to action to the world, urging individuals and governments to help the Tibetan people in their nonviolent struggle for freedom.

Madison, WI, USA:

Two Weeks In Madison WI, A Tribute, The music is “Wander My Friends” by Bear McCreary

TheVoiceOfWisconsin

BEFORE there was “Occupy”  the people of Wisconsin occupied the Capital Building in protest.  This ongoing event was IGNORED by most of mainstream media in the United States.  Other countries sent reporters to cover what was happening in Madison while the major networks in the USA did their best to ignore it. Democracy Now! was one of the few American news outlets that provided coverage. Students, teachers, firefighters, farmers and people from every social economic class in WI joined together with the Wisconsin 14 who did the only thing they could to stop The Bill–they exiled themselves from the state of WI.

“Tell Me What Democracy Looks: This is What Democracy Looks Like” —Inside the Capital building in Madison–this was not a fifteen minute protest. This continued for days on end until Gov. Scot Walker found ways to keep the people out of the building. Enlarge the video to full screen and watch for the round ‘food’ tray, I think it’s bread, come to the drummers through the crowd.

Idle No More

Bullet Proof

No Time For Apathy

Fair Use – For Educational Purposes Only (feel free to mirror)I do not own any of the material (music, images & video).Watch in HD/Full Screen and read the following before starting the video. The following video tries to cover 1200 years of History (from my perception, I live in BC so there is a couple of issues that are close to my heart that are represented), relating to the indigenous peoples of North America from the Viking, Spanish and British invasions, to current. It is an attempt to cover a long time frame in a short period of time and I mean no disrespect to anyone. It is a show of support for the “Idle No More” campaign, and to show my support towards peaceful protests. The images and videos used are meant to portray a general overview and are not meant to cast all non indigenous individuals in a bad light. I believe most human beings are on the same page when it comes to equality and fair treatment. It is a little blunt, but sometimes there is no way around it…..Music:”Titanium” – David Guetta cover by: Boyce Avenue

Bay musical group we dont know their name provides musical context for the joy and pride felt by of all those present at the Port of Oakland Shut Down, today, 11.2.11. This non-violent action was done in the most peaceful and loving way in the HISTORY OF MANKIND! The people of Oakland, CA have showed the rest of us how to stand together and continue this move towards true democracy and true economic repair of the chronic and cynical damage inflicted on the 99 by the greed of the 1%.

To provide a sense of the number of people involved, here is Helicopter ‘music’ from the air view provided by a news cam. Soon after there would be no more of these views as the local television stations ceased reporting to the public the huge turnout. Probably in an effort to NOT inform and encourage others to participate. The main coverage was via people live-streaming the event on the ground via smart phones and laptops to online  livestream sites where thousands more people watched on the world wide web.

Occupy Oakland called for a general strike on the Port of Oakland, the 5th Largest port in the United States. They held the Port for 20+ hours stopping out incoming and outgoing cargo trucks.

Quick Flick Picks

Okay the heat is UP UP UP and so is the electric bill due to the NEED for air conditioning and fans to prevent being boiled alive like lobsters in a pot inside your own home. So here is a suggestion if you’re pressed hard for disposable cash and yet desiring some decent escapism from your local heat wave. Though it is my understanding that in some parts of the world waves of rain are causing very serious flooding. Ah weather extremes–what do they mean. Well if we’re brutally honest we know full well what they mean. But–right now the issue is heat relief and some decent entertainment at a price we can afford.  If you’re not aware that your local public library probably has movies available to check out either entirely free or for the nominal fee of one brilliantly useless American dollar, as my public library charges for the price of walking off with a brand new dvd for about a week, then you need to explore this heat distraction avenue asap!

Here is a list of some of the flicks on dvd that I have enjoyed so far via my public library.  Several of which they actually purchased via requests for recommendations.  Your suggestions and comments are very welcome here. Please share whatever film gems you’ve discovered no matter what the genre.  While I’m no ardent fan of Animal House or SAW fare I realize other folks are often on the lookout for such entertainment. So please don’t hesitate to share whatever flicks trip your dvd playing trap.

And now on with the shows:

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen — Love of fishing not required for viewing. In my opinion Ewan McGregor steals the show quite delightfully.

Rez Bomb — Lakota girl and White boy fall in love and find a whole lot of trouble on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0212132/

The Tracker —  Just f * $ & ing damn BRILLIANT!!!!

Submarine — Ah young gangly British love….

Memories of Murder — Do NOT watch this with the dubbing. Read the subtitles. The dubbing destroys the integrity of the film so badly it ought to be removed as an option. I watched it both ways after making the mistake of trying the dubbed route.  Very soon it became evident that something was not right. This is an EXCELLENT Korean film that offers visual beauty, an unnerving and complex storyline and memorable performances.

The Crazies — A surprisingly satisfying modern chemical horror story.  Yes, I’m serious, it’s pretty damn good stuff.

Reel Injun– I’ve plugged this documentary earlier and am doing so again. It bears watching–and Chris Hill offers great comic relief.

Love Letters to Earth

On February 14 people everywhere express their love with actions, flowers, cards, gifts and more.  Some people express their love for Earth by protesting its ongoing destruction by our continuing dependence on oil for meeting our energy needs.  Some write these lovers off as foolish hippies and idealistic tree huggers but they are neither foolish nor idealists. These are the hardcore realists of our world.  Today there is another effort underway to stop the Keystone XL pipeline development yet again in spite of the public outcry.  If you’ve signed any petition for this effort previously I’m sure your email box is currently awash in urgent requests for your signature again because big oil and its supporters don’t give up. Their intention is to wear everyone down until big oil gets its way AGAIN. Apparently the American government has learned nothing from the BP oil spill and its continuing consequences in the Gulf of Mexico.  There is an upside to all this lobbying for more pipelines and greater development of an oil project that is already the size of Great Britain–more people are learning about the Tar Sands. And more people are saying NO to it and to big oil.  Change makes many uncomfortable but change we must–or kill the only planet that supports us with air to breathe, water to drink, and soil for food.  Nature is not dependent upon us. We are dependent upon nature for our survival. As you drive along in your car fueled by oil you may feel far removed from the heartbeat of the world. Everything except your next chore of the day may be far from your mind. But consider how different your daily life would be if there was no clean air to breath, no clean water to drink, and no fresh food in your grocery store. Shall we all live on little purple pills popped into our mouths while we breathe through gas masks? Shall we? Isn’t it time to write your own “love letter” to Earth? Folks–big oil has to “go.” It’s literally killing people and the Earth.  It will kill you and your loved ones–make no mistake about it. And the people who own and operate big oil will also die by their own actions. Denial will not prevent their demise.  So, take some time and figure how you can show some love.

The People of Erris —  Ireland

Shell to Sea — the Irish battle against Shell for 11 years and counting.

For many the mention of Ireland conjures thoughts of W.B. Yeats, lush green grass and dark guiness beer freely flowing in crowded pubs.  Who thinks of Ireland being the battleground for a war against the oil giant Royal Dutch Shell being waged by young people, fathers, mothers, grandparents. For over 11 years Irish people have taken action against the destruction of their land and communities by Shell. Yes there is much more in Ireland than pubs and poetry.

The first FAQ on the Shell to Sea list. More FAQs and information at  http://www.shelltosea.com/content/faqs

  • Why is Shell’s Corrib gas project unsafe?

There are major health and safety issues with the high pressure raw gas pipeline planned so close to people’s homes – regarding an earlier pipeline route Shell admitted that homes would be put within a kill-zone from heat radiation in the event of a pipe failure. The refinery itself is in the catchment area of the local drinking water supply which would be forbidden in most other European countries.

Where there are profits to be made who gives a damn about tourism, fishing, swimming and the safety of the local residents? Clearly not Shell nor the corrupt politicians who made this deal which offers no benefits to the Irish people at large nor in the communities affected by the pipeline or refinery.

Occupy Confused? Not on Dame Street–or in Philly either.

A continuing complaint about the Occupy Movement is lack of focus and vague demands. Apparently some folks are hearing impaired and have serious trouble reading. Maybe that’s due to the lackluster education system in America? Or is it selective hearing and intellectual denial? Indeed none of this fits well into 30 second mainstream news coverage soundbites.  Probably because the issues are too big and complex and hence mainstream news mentality FAILS dramatically with anything requiring their attention beyond 5 minutes viewing span.  It’s clear many people still think this movement is a ‘joke’ that will vanish with winter snows and freezing temperatures.  Well, even if the symbolic tents do disappear via snow or police action–the people involved have not and they will not be invisible nor silent — even if corporate controlled mainstream media continues their puppet plays.

While much protest music has come from the past, for example, John Lennon’s “Imagine”, there are new songs being written too.

Recorded LIVE at Occupy Dame Street, Dublin, Ireland    December 10, 2011  “Foreign Lands” by Matthew.  Thanks to Liam of The Fingals channel, for the video.

To protest the recent Budget Cuts on the backs of the people who did not create the continually swelling economic disaster The Spectacle of Defiance and Hope filled Dame Street with scarlet in many forms–including spoken word.

Confused? Maybe  Curly can help clear up a concept or two.

If that doesn’t work maybe Peadar  O hlci ‘s  song “Occupy Public Spaces”  will do the trick.

Recently a “pigeon” delivered a letter of Solidarity to Occupy Dame Street from Occupy Philly.  So it seems fitting to connect this post about Occupy Dame Street with a tip of the tubes to Occupy Philly with their fierce Foreclosure of Wells Fargo on November 18, 2011.  If this action had aired LIVE on any television station in Philly as it did on Livestream—how could anyone who suffered foreclosure in Philly not have joined Occupy Philly at Wells Fargo?

Oh yeah, they stayed!    And look who WAS watching:

That’s not an American accent, is it?  O my, Occupy unites the world?

Occupy Dame Street Kettles Central Bank in Dublin–with tents not orange mesh. No pepper sprayed.

All day, every day Occupy Dame Street kettles the Central Bank in Dublin, Ireland. The camp receives postal mail at Occupy Dame Street, Central Bank, Dame Street, Dublin 2, Ireland.  The garda help keep the drunks out of the occupy camp.  Sweeny’s Pub provides laptop charging. Other businesses donate food, including a steady stream of CAKE. Yes, you read that right, CAKE.  In case you thought occupy only occupies in America here is an introduction to an occupy in Ireland.  The Emerald Isle also has economic and environmental woes. Yes the Irish march and protest too.  Though you might not believe that if you trust your television news.
