Three Mis-used and Over-used Words That Ought to be Dis-used ASAP. So Rants I.

Yes, it has finally gotten to the point where I can no longer refrain from have a jolly good rant about three words that have been abused so thoroughly by the writers of television programs, movies and by the social media addict generation.  I can’t wait to no longer hear: Amazing, Awesome and Complicated—as in the utterly useless, evasive phrase, “It’s complicated.” never ever uttered again.

You’ve heard them all. I know you have because they’re impossible to avoid these days no matter if you’re in a coffee-shop, the grocery store or the hardware store.

Amazing implies a fair degree of wonder and surprise.  How many ways can people or things be called amazing? Really? What ever happened to you look very lovely or very handsome? That’s a beautiful dress or a very flattering suit–but I’m not astonished at your appearance. Nope, I’m not, sorry.

Awesome, hmmm, I guess this word conveys open-mouth, drop dead AWE and Shock of that inspiring AWE that has pulled the rug out from under our flat feet. My meddlesome mind associates Awe–some or a little of it–with truly above ordinary events and things. Dresses, food, shoes, hairdos, cars are far too mundane things to be imbued with real awe. Who wants to talk Nuclear Bombs? Hmm? Now those are fully awe inspiring in many ways—from their power of destruction to views of the aftermath of their deployment.

It’s Complicated–wtf? Is this or is this not the most banal evasive phrase ever uttered in response to any inquiry about human behavior?

“Why did you cheat on your significant other?”

“It’s Complicated.

I bet it is: pheromones and hormones influence humans in very complex ways. Don’t you just adore your nose? The Complicated things it tells your brain are Amazing and Awesome beyond compare.

Language, it’s Complicated.

Or are people simply too damn lazy to go beyond using stock phrases?

Thirteen most eminent Polish film directors made their short films in the common effort to answer one question: “What does ‘Solidarity’ mean today?” Their responses differ as much as the directors and films included in the project. However, all of them refer to the great spontaneous social outbreak of 1980. The emergence of “Solidarity” inspired the changes in Europe, the new world for future generations. We have here short features, documentary impressions as well as a musical. Aside from some pathos, there is also irony and bitter reflection over the wasted opportunities. A fascinating, surprising and uncompromising, true and honest film…

Trzynastu wybitnych polskich reżyserów filmowych nakręciło trzynaście odrębnych nowel filmowych, które łączy próba odpowiedzi na pytanie: co dla mnie znaczy dzisiaj “Solidarność”. Odpowiedzi różnią się tak jak różni są twórcy tych krótkich filmów. Dla wszystkich jednak punktem odniesienia jest spontaniczny ruch społeczny 1980 roku. Powstanie “Solidarności” zainicjowało tworzenie nowego porządku w Europie, upadek systemu totalitarnego. Jest to film o wielkim heroicznym triumfie, ale też nie pozbawiony goryczy. Film wieloznaczny, niekiedy zaskakujący, fascynujący swoją szczerością i bezkompromisowością.

Two thieves steal a young man’s bag in the train. To their disappointment, there are only underground leaflets printed on the home printer. The thieves’ victim gets arrested at the next train station. One of the thieves shows unexpected nobleness.

Dwaj złodziej kradną w pociągu torbę współpasażerowi. Ku ich rozczarowaniu, w środku są “tylko” ulotki odbite na powielaczu. Pozbawiony torby młody chłopak zostaje mimo to aresztowany na kolejnej stacji przez tajniaków. W jednym ze złodziei budzi się na chwilę szlachetniejszy odruch.

The story of the writing boards where the striking Gdansk Shipyard workers – with the two students’s help – wrote their demands and hung them on the main shipyard gate. On the first day of the martial law in Poland, the secret police stole the boards from the Maritime Museum. They did not know that they stole fake ones. The real ones were taken and hidden earlier by the museum’s curator.

Opowieść o historii tablic, na których – z pomocą dwóch studentów – strajkujący stoczniowcy z Gdańska spisali swoje postulaty, a następnie wywiesili je na bramie stoczni. Pierwszego dnia stanu wojennego z Muzeum Morskiego zabrali je funkcjonariusze SB. Nie wiedzieli jednak, że to kopie. Oryginały wywiózł wcześniej kustosz.

In the summer 1980, the group of three polish cave explorers becomes stranded underground. While waiting for help, they learn about signing the Gdansk Agreement between the workers and the government. It starts the discussuion about economical and political situation in Poland, about their hopes and dreams. Among the cave explorers is student Janek, means Jan Jakub Kolski – the director of this film.

In August 1980, Filip and Tomek meet in the train going to the Coast. They both read “The Little Apocalypse” by Tadeusz Konwicki. Filip carries a petrol can with him. Tomek suspects that Filip wants to butrn himself alive, so he tries to stop him.

W sierpniu 1980 r. w pociągu jadącym na Wybrzeże spotykają się dwaj młodzi ludzie: Tomek i Filip. Obaj czytają “Małą apokalipsę” Tadeusza Konwickiego. Filip wiezie ze sobą kanister z benzyną. W trakcie rozmowy Tomek nabiera przekonania, że współpasażer chce dokonać samospalenia. W żarliwych słowach próbuje go powstrzymać.

In this short quasi-documentary, Krzysztof Zanussi ponders back to the winter of 1981 when he was shooting “From the Far Country”, the biography of John Paul II. In one of the scenes, when the extras were supposed to put on military German or Soviet Uniforms, everybody wanted to get the German one.

“Landscape” by Robert Gliński shows the Gdans Shipyard as it is seen today: engine rroms covered with rust, empty docks and garbage flying in the air. This is a sad metaphor of what happen with “Solidarity”. There are only groups of international tourists who fill the space that used to be the place of origin of “Solidarity”. Most of the old workers are unemployed now.

“Krajobraz” Roberta Glińskiego ukazuje dzisiejszy obraz Stoczni Gdańskiej będący przygnębiającą metaforą tego, co stało się z “Solidarnością”. Rdzewiejące hale, puste doki, śmieci unoszone wiatrem. Po historycznej kolebce związku kręcą się tylko zagraniczne wycieczki. Dawni pracownicy są w większości bezrobotni.

This film is a video recorded meeting between the director of “The Man of Iron”, Andrzej Wajda, and actors Krystyna Janda and Jerzy Radziwiłłowicz, who played main characters in “The Man of Iron”, with Lech Wałęsa, the Solidarity leader. The meeting took place in the huge, empty screening room of the “Neptun” theatre in Gdansk. In August 1980, when Wałęsa congratulated Wajda for making a great film about the August Events, he encouraged the famous director to shoot another film titled “The Man of Hope”, but it never happened. What would it be such film today?

In this dramatized short documentary, the director Małgorzata Szumowska utilized the archival films shot by her father, a well-known documentary filmmaker. A 30-year-old woman tells the story how “Solidarity” influenced her family’s life, particularly her idealistic father’s one. He never benefited directly from the political changes. His only reward is that his daughter lives in a free country.

Trzydziestoletnia kobieta opowiada o tym, jak “Solidarność” zmieniła życie jej rodziny, a zwłaszcza ojca – idealisty, któremu przemiany polityczne nie przyniosły żadnych bezpośrednich korzyści. Jedyną nagrodą jest życie jego córki w wolnym kraju.

Illegal by Bettina Restrepo–Are your papers in order?

     What would you do if you were a girl seriously wanting your father for your fifteenth birthday, quienceanera, and he’d suddenly gone silent in a strange land called Houston?

Bettina Restrepo’s Illegal places readers smack dab in young Nora’s desperate world of failing grapefruit orchard, dying village and dangerous journey to the not very welcoming land of Texas. In Houston the buildings grow tall while keeping people small and insignificant. Deepening poverty and increasing concern about the silence of Nora’s father from the land of opportunity drive the young girl and her mother into making a desperate search to a place where calling the police to report an assault is not a viable option.  No one wants to leave the once thriving village but survival dictates desperate measure for desperate times when the tax man gets impatient.

Love and family values push three generations of Mexican women to leave behind all they know and hold dear to search for the man missing from their daily lives. Deliberately or not, Restrepo presents anew the mythic threesome of the maiden, matron and crone in the forms of Nora, her mother and grandmother as they are forced to confront the reality of the economic and social death of their Mexican village. The grapefruits rotting in the once prosperous orchard reinforce the mythic imagery of a dying land unable to support the people. Even the village bank scarcely has any purpose other than to employ Hector.

    Illegal is a dark reality check of a young adult novel that many American adults would benefit from reading. What’s the Dream Act about? Who wants it and why? Well, Nora’s story might provide some clues to the answers. Hungry stomachs often go hand in hand with hungry young minds. The need to make a meaningful life wherever you find your feet planted is real and valid cause for concern. Unless they’ve experienced poverty in America many young readers might have trouble entering Nora’s world where learning to speak English is a vital concern surpassed by the need to help her mother keep it together in a hostile urban jungle where girls beat each other for entrance into gangs.

Restrepo does her best to get readers into and keep them in Nora’s changing world.  It’s not an easy task. To help raise cultural awareness she incorporates Espanol into the novel. There’s a decent little glossary at the back for readers who have no idea that cartas means a pack of cards, cabrito is a baby goat, and that a coyote can be something other than an animal–a human smuggler. Illegal is a solid novel which pulls no punches yet works to be accessible to young adult readers who are curious about what’s going with other young people beyond the boundaries of their own private worlds.

Now what would have happened if the Native Americans had thought to demand identity papers and immigration documents for all the white European invaders searching for land and riches in the New World?  Imagine that.

A Very Wicked New Year to One and All

Hello everyone to whom I’ve been AWOL for so long.  Just have been pre-occupied with streams of Occupy online and other things offline. Hope everyone is well and is surviving whatever winter is throwing your way weatherwise. It’s COLD here but nothing to complain about.  Looking forward to visiting many blogcasas very soon. Something that came up in a recent occupy livestream chat was the lack of comprehension of word ‘play’ on the part of many Americans. Apparently our educational system offers NO appreciation of the finer points of the English language and hence our sense of humor is stunted by our lack of appreciation for clever turns of phrases.  Some of you poets will probably beg to differ on this account. But–believe me it is a valid a concern time and time again in many occupy chats where random segments of the global population consort daily.  Some humor simply does not come across well in text. Others fail to comprehend multiple meanings of words. And there are many forms of self-expression from individual communities that take time and patience to decipher.  This goes beyond the texting genre. Though that also comes into play in the chat stream in various incarnations.  Best thing to do when at a loss is to ask for definitions–some are obvious, some bewildering and others very enlightening and useful.  It’s an ongoing exercise in communication on a global level.  So–when I use the word “wicked” to herald the new year –I have a variety of meanings and associations with “wicked” that vary from slang to formal dictionary traditional meanings–very cool and wonderful to downright evil.  While hoping 2012 is indeed a wonderful and exciting new year for everyone in all the possible positive ways this is tempered with the awareness of the president signing the National Defence Authorization Act on New Years Eve when many people were paying NO attention to this potentially evil little legislative ‘delight’.  So–while every ‘new’ year brims with creative positive potential it also brims with all sorts of  new negative hatchings as well.   And so it goes…..

For the moment–Chocolate truffles for everyone! But don’t you dare fall asleep under the table this new year or there may be hell to pay……. Mic Check!

            White Clay

This is a border place. Like all borders.

There is a feel that defies interpretation.

 

How does one define nostalgia for pain,

I miss my father beating my mother Or

When my mother drank she cursed my father.

I used to eat bologna sandwiches, potato chips for dinner

Dinner? Or was it a snack it was what I had for lunch?

 

If I went north towards home

If I went south into tomorrow

 

Some have made this border place a cause

I spent hours of my childhood here

 

How does one know of borders

When one becomes the border

 

I am still in between places

I still have the last potato chip bag

And that bologna skin ring

One Sunday I counted all the families

Coming for floats

Chocolate and vanilla cones.

On Howard’s Store wall

Were Lakota words.

If you could read Lakota

These were items he sold

Game Wardens Providing Security In Madison? And another dirty word for my list.

As I await email updates from my progressive liberal cronies who reside in Madison, Wisconsin–and who, btw, have NOTHING good to say about Republican Governor Scott Walker who recently cost the state a HUGE chunk of money by killing a light rail project–more money than the project  itself would have cost (apparently he does not comprehend which numbers are higher than others)–I am trying to find news updates of the protest which has closed down the public schools.  I just read that GAME WARDENS are providing the security for the capital building? (*&^????!! Game Wardens? Are they hoping to bag some teachers’ heads for their office walls or what? Or are they just place warmers until Scott Walker calls out the National Guard to defend his office, car and home from the teachers who are hot on his math challenged Republican tail? 

While trying to get news from a Wisconsin online news source I almost died laughing when I read a comment about the “liberal press” not allowing a Walker supporter post his comment.  (*&^!!! the LIBERAL PRESS????? Oh yeah, Amy Goodman covered the Wisconsin protest issues on Democracy Now! but I don’t see any other LIBERAL PRESS doing much to prevent the Walker supporter from posting their comment online.  I think I have a new DIRTY WORD —> Conservative.  Yes, I am fed up with reading and hearing the word Liberal bandied about like a foul smell.  I think the word Conservative deserves equal foul smell status at the very least.  Let the Game Wardens take pot shots at all the whiners who can’t get their comments posted online. OH, but if the comment wasn’t being posted as the Conservative Republican supporter of Scott Walker claimed, then how in the world did it appear online for me to read? GO Figure that one out! Duh.

Dirty Words~ Contextual Madness?

Language is a powerful thing because it allows us to communicate. How we communicate is as varied as we are as individuals. Depending on your inclinations the visual, audio and print media you encounter utilizes words in particular ways to achieve certain reactionary ends. Words like “liberal” and “environmentalist” have recently taken on very negative connotations in some contexts–including some generally considered “mainstream”. I, and anyone reading this post,  could make a long list of words that by themselves are neither good nor evil, clean nor dirty, and are yet employed in very negative manners to suit certain agendas. A few months back I had an exchange with someone on another blog regarding particular political events.  One person discussed the word “peace” as if it was a concept advocated only by unpatriotic idiots.  Interestingly enough said person did not like being labeled as a “war-monger”. Even though they’d clearly stated their position they did not like the words that accurately described their chosen stance.  I wondered why then and still do now. If the descriptive shoe-word “fits” then wear it.  Perhaps the other person had never viewed themselves in the context of such a label? I don’t know because the conversation ended without any such  enlightenment.  But I know that I have had enough of having the things I value denigrated by the negativity of others. Hence I’ve decided to post some words that I currently view as “dirty” and/or “evil”.  Yes, I’m tired of being respectful, polite, tolerant and patient with people who are deliberately disrespectful, impolite, intolerant and impatient.  Perhaps one way of dealing with such folks is to give them a taste of their own behavior. I’m sure there are other more positive ways. But I am very tired of all this nasty nonsense that diverts attention from the real issues we all ought to be joining together to address in the MOST positive and effective ways. Maybe the air needs clearing, the cards need to be laid on the table and all that jazz. If nothing else, I’m going to enjoy some catharsis. So, here’s my current list of “dirty”–negative– words. Of course the words themselves are not literally “dirty” –they’re just the language means to denote concepts and actions.  You are invited to add to the list–be forewarned now that anything I deem posted with  deliberate intention to forment or spread hate  will see cyber ink only for as long as it takes me to discover it.  Why? Because this is my blogcasa and “my” casa means “my” ground-rules.

Discussion is invited in order to refine this attempt at communication. I’m also interested in learning about words that you’ve discovered have become “dirty” in certain contexts or guilty by “association.”

Tasunka Witko/Crazy Horse stories Sandoz Heard

“Crazy Horse laughed, a sound they had seldom heard this last while. “I am no white man,” he said. “They are the only people who make rules for others and say:  ‘If you stay on one side of this line it is peace but if you go on the other side I will kill you all.’ There is still plenty of room, my friend. Camp where you wish.”

If you’re searching for a biography to dig into in then I suggest  ye seek and find a copy of Crazy Horse, The Strange Man of the Oglalas by Mari Sandoz. It’s an oldie but a damn goodie if there ever was one.  Several other writers have taken runs at rendering the life and times  of the Lakota warrior.  Kingsley Bray’s work is quite fine, but for my money, Mari Sandoz’s effort delivers the real goods. Why? Because she and Eleanor Hinman gathered information directly from people who actually knew Crazy Horse—He Dog, Little Killer, Short Bull, Red Feather.  No amount of digging through papers can substitute for that sort of personal engagement with living sources with memories to share, the ability to answer questions, and provide details. Though by her own accounting, Sandoz also did a lot of digging through various paper piles.  What’s perhaps most telling was her awareness of the expressive yet difficult to wield power of language and writing to convey the ‘unknown’ to others–an awareness that prompted her to state, “…I have used the simplest words possible, hoping by idiom and figures and the underlying  rhythm pattern to say some of the things of the Indian for which there are no white-man words, suggest something of his inner nature, something of his relationship to the earth and the sky and all that is between.”  Some things can not be translated because there are no ‘equals’ for concepts, for values, for insights and connections from one language and culture to another which has no such concepts, values, insights or connections. Sandoz realized this essential ‘lack’ or obstacle and did her best to overcome it in order to try to get at the heart of a man, of a people, of a culture under intense assault to become something entirely foreign to their natures.  That’s a tough task for any writer working outside their own mental landscape. Sandoz took it on of her own accord and the fact that the resulting writing has the power to break through time and place and cultural barriers places the work in a class by itself.
