Sidebar Switch Out To The Civil Wars

The Civil Wars have invaded the sidebar en mass replacing the delightful 2Cellos.  Much thanks to Bearspawprint for sharing this duo at her blogcasa some time in the past where I got hooked. One of the perks of blogland is that you find things you might not otherwise discover.  Some of the songs on the sidebar are part of the live performance occupying this post, but there’s a lot more where those came from and live is LIVE after all.  What are you waiting for? Play, play, play. Listen while you run amok in cyberspace if the sound and lyrics agree with you.

Enjoy~~

Why?

It’s all about the DOTS, of course.  Since much of my art is composed of tiny dots–a technique called stippling--Michio Kaku’s little chat about his new book caught my attention. Once I lay eyes and hands on The Future of the Mind hopefully I’ll have more to say about it than the fact that my curiosity is highly aroused by Kaku’s notions.  What’s brewing in your mind?

Hey, so yeah, for today LP’s voice is tickling my eardrums enough to wind up here as an introductory post for anyone who didn’t catch her Into the Wild Official Video previously  in The Wild post. I’ve included three interview videos to give some small sense of her.

Bread and Puppet Theater + “crisis bread” & “crying cream dreams” = Nourishment

In part to prove I still have a sense of humor, such as it may be, I offer some theatre and refreshments for your enjoyment.  Perhaps some of you will find Amy Goodman’s interview with Peter Schumann, founder of the Bread and Puppet Theater, as delightful as I did. Or not.  Schumann’s references to his own bread baking reminded me of poems I wrote for brulionmann as a result of his complaints about the state of bread–and cream– so it seemed like a great combo read meal deal.

Classical? Will Chopin, a little cello, The Pianist from Warsaw Radio, and maybe a train ride do it for you? ~ Oh yes, of course, this is a Music Theme for December 18, 2013.

Perhaps I should say a few words about how and why we’re here in classical music land. Or maybe not. Johnny picked it. Yes, the R.E.M man selected this Classical Music Theme.  Time for a non sequitur: I’m partial to certain music at certain times. While doing this post I indulged in Chopin, animation and a piece about history which found its way into book and film art via The Pianist.  One could truly go wild with this classical theme. Let’s face it, we could be all over the globe with classic this and classical that. At the moment, about all I can muster is a slow waltz. But the once scandalous waltz is better than nothing, is it not?

Chopin ~ Waltz Op Posth. in A minor

On The Waltz from Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltz

In the 1771 German novel Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim by Sophie von La Roche, a high-minded character complains about the newly introduced waltz among aristocrats thus: “But when he put his arm around her, pressed her to his breast, cavorted with her in the shameless, indecent whirling-dance of the Germans and engaged in a familiarity that broke all the bounds of good breeding—then my silent misery turned into burning rage.”[4]

~~

Shocking many when it was first introduced,[10] the waltz became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s, spreading to many other countries in the years to follow. It became fashionable inBritain during the Regency period, having been made respectable by the endorsement of Dorothea Lieven, wife of the Russian ambassador.[11]Almack’s, the most exclusive club in London, permitted the waltz from about 1812 on, though the entry in the Oxford English Dictionary shows that it was considered “riotous and indecent” as late as 1825.

What would they make of Lady Gaga and Madonna and the rest of the sex song singers? Hmm. There might be a lot of bonfires……..

Departures ~ Cello solo ~ Ave Maria Gounod and movie theme.  We’re all born and we all die. It’s good to go out in style.  When his music world goes bust, a cellist has to find another way to put rice and fish on the kitchen table.  A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.

Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom: Bach, Fractals and the Art of Fugue —Fractals, math art, oh yeah, music deals with numbers and a lot of them. Huh, who knew? Maybe that’s why children who receive some form of music instruction while in school get stimulated to do things.  Oh I’m not saying what kind of things. Just things. Like thinking and such.

Harlan Brothers :

There is a poetic connection between the music of Bach and the famous fractal known as the Mandelbrot set. Bach’s compositions represented the height of Baroque sensibilities; intricacy, nested levels of adornment, and the suggestion of infinite space were compelling structural properties in the art and architecture of his day.

The Lone Ranger & Tonto versus the Iron Horse Makers aka The Corrupt Military Industrial Complex ~~ Does Disney have any clue what a subversive film The Lone Ranger truly is?  I sincerely doubt it.  Neither do a lot of people who post bs on online about Depp’s makeup and the rest of the basically unimportant shyte. The important shyte is what’s going on–and still going– with the military industrial complex’s death grip on the world.  As for the music and the film, well,  hold onto your hat, because these guys are playing with dynamite! Not to mention that gun inside Red’s leg.

I can’t help but return to Chopin and a touch of history portrayed in film with this last piece. Here everything comes together–the actual pianist playing the music of specific historical moment in time. Can you imagine playing anything while under military attack?

Wladyslaw Szpilman (Wladek) played this music in the last live broadcast for the Polish Radio on 23.9.1939 . An hour later German bombs destroyed its power supply and the Warsaw Radio closed for long 6 years.

~~~~~~
Speaking of Warsaw Radio  — There is a new band which takes its name from the musicians who played on the Warsaw Radio Station in 1939. I stumbled upon the band while searching for another info video regarding the historical radio station. You can discover them online —>> http://www.warsaw-radio.com/ . Oh and they’re currently performing in the side bar videos. Their most recent video release is Light Up The Night and it’s headlining the recent post list aka mixed relish. Their music is  not classical, but the connection to the last musical selection above warrants drawing a line to their dot.
Thanks Johnny.  I might never have discovered Warsaw Radio if not for your Classical Music Theme choice, and my own adherence to Dirk Gently’s holistic detective paradigm.  True story.  Yeah.
A Love Letter In This Digital Age: Music Theme ~ Love ~ for Friday the 13th of December.
Music Theme for December 13. Yes, that’s a Friday. I say we defy Friday the 13th with Love.
Inclined to offer more than music? Please feel free to incorporate whatever trips your love trap.  No, it is not my intention to confine Love to only the romantic variety. Though you certainly may do so.  Explore however you are so inclined.  Feel free to mix media–music and film videos, poetry, prose, visual art. Incorporate your own work and the works of others. If you will, think of this as an online Love Letter drawing upon and going in any and all directions that inspire you.
By John Donne 1572–1631 John Donne
For God’s sake hold your tongue, and let me love,
         Or chide my palsy, or my gout,
My five gray hairs, or ruined fortune flout,
         With wealth your state, your mind with arts improve,
                Take you a course, get you a place,
                Observe his honor, or his grace,
Or the king’s real, or his stampèd face
         Contemplate; what you will, approve,
         So you will let me love.
Alas, alas, who’s injured by my love?
         What merchant’s ships have my sighs drowned?
Who says my tears have overflowed his ground?
         When did my colds a forward spring remove?
                When did the heats which my veins fill
                Add one more to the plaguy bill?
Soldiers find wars, and lawyers find out still
         Litigious men, which quarrels move,
         Though she and I do love.
Call us what you will, we are made such by love;
         Call her one, me another fly,
We’re tapers too, and at our own cost die,
         And we in us find the eagle and the dove.
                The phœnix riddle hath more wit
                By us; we two being one, are it.
So, to one neutral thing both sexes fit.
         We die and rise the same, and prove
         Mysterious by this love.
We can die by it, if not live by love,
         And if unfit for tombs and hearse
Our legend be, it will be fit for verse;
         And if no piece of chronicle we prove,
                We’ll build in sonnets pretty rooms;
                As well a well-wrought urn becomes
The greatest ashes, as half-acre tombs,
         And by these hymns, all shall approve
         Us canonized for Love.
And thus invoke us: “You, whom reverend love
         Made one another’s hermitage;
You, to whom love was peace, that now is rage;
         Who did the whole world’s soul contract, and drove
                Into the glasses of your eyes
                (So made such mirrors, and such spies,
That they did all to you epitomize)
         Countries, towns, courts: beg from above
         A pattern of your love!”
In case you’re in the dark about Donne. He was not a one poem hit wonder. The man delivered the poetic goods time and time again. He had The Right Stuff from start to finish. Yeah, I think he’s a damn cool poet even though he’s been dead for a few centuries.
*
Note:
On his way to a promising career, John Donne became a Member of Parliament in 1601. That same year, he married 16-year-old Anne More, the niece of Sir Egerton. Both Lord Egerton and Anne’s father, George More, strongly disapproved of the marriage, and, as punishment, More did not provide a dowry. Lord Egerton fired Donne and had him imprisoned for a short time. The eight years following Donne’s release would be a struggle for the married couple until Anne’s father finally paid her dowry.
So who is ready to lift some spirits with Love during this season of holy days ancient, current and future?  Everyone is invited to share, even if it’s only a single piece that matters very much to you. Share in the comments, post on your blog and drop a link here so that we’re all connected.  Small or large makes no matter.  Let’s celebrate Love for a few glorious moments together.
Fire: A Musical Descent Into the Lower Realms. Some What For Mentally Mature Audiences Only, A.K.A Those Not Easily Offended.
Electric Six is here because, well damn it, I’ve had to listen to this song by Electric Six a lot by default. By default, I mean that it’s a favorite of someone in my abode and hence is played OFTEN.  What’s the point of demanding and support freedom of thought and expression if you don’t follow through in your own home domain? Not much in my opinion. After years of exposure to the song and the video it was no surprise to moi that Danger! High Voltage came immediately to my brain-pan when I read that Bear’s theme choice was Fire. Honestly, “Fire in the disco!” was instantly on the scene.  It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it has been listened to and viewed with many cups of tea at hand for perhaps its number one fan with a mouse at their disposal.  I have no idea what Grandmother Fire would make of this video beyond the fact that, yeah it is base human nature to “keep starting fires.”
Note: “Play” at your risk, potentially offensive language and image contents for some sensibilities. Or maybe not?
Next, so much for The Good Old Days– Not so much, methinks.
A popular pumping chantey, this was actually the last chantey sung aboard a commercial British square-rigger, by Stan Hugill in 1929, as the barque Garthpool was pumped out for the last time. There are a number of versions, and in some the “fire down below” is more explicitly a reference to venereal disease.
Idle No More is One Year Young on November 10, 2013
All Following Content is from Idle No More email news:
#INM1YR Nov10 Idle No More Revolution
Looking back, looking ahead
Idle No More is one of the largest Indigenous mass movements in recent history – sparking hundreds of teach-ins, rallies, and direct actions across the globe. What began as a series of teach-ins on November 10th, 2012 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to protest laws that would scale back on environmental protections and threaten Indigenous self-determination, has now changed the social and political landscape of Canada and beyond.
We know that many communities will be holding symbolic celebrations on Nov 10th to honour the birth of Idle No More. Idle No More organizers hope that all of us as individuals and as groups do take a moment on Nov 10th to look back and look ahead. And if you are planning a celebration or action on Nov 10th then please add it to the events listing on the website and if you are able to, please join the webinar below!
Winona Laduke Webinar Poster#INM1yr Winona LaDuke Webinar and Webinar Series
To mark the One Year anniversary of the Idle No More Movement, we will be launching a series of webinars, beginning with renowned Anishnaabe activist Winona LaDuke.  Please join us on the one year anniversary, November 10 at 10am CST for her talk “Restoring Stable Indigenous Economies”.www.idlenomore.ca/n10webinar  Other webinars will be announced soon.
Transforming ideas into action: Teach-ins, Direct Action, Round dances and Rallies. Sovereignty and Self-determination:
Indigenous peoples have been inspired to reclaim sacred sites, reinstitute traditional forms of leadership, and assert self-determination in the face of ongoing oppressive policies. Idle No More organizers and supporters are defending the land and water across the planet while also realizing the importance of educating the general public.
Building Alliances and Solidarity
Over the past year, the Idle No More movement has inspired thousands of people to action!  committing themselves to ongoing resistance against colonialism. Idle No More has become the center of media attention, connecting millions of people through our websites, twitter account and facebook pages every day. It has also brought together a number of Indigenous solidarity groups and allies looking to work against the current and pending governmental policy that impacts on collective rights, social safety nets, and environmental protections.Idle No More has provided hope and love at a time when global corporate profits rule.
“The Lost Vikings” A Cautionary Tale for Our Times: Adapt or Die
While tooling around on the tubes of you in search of other items of interest I came across this PBS segment from Secrets of the Dead. Finding it quite appropriate regarding a number of subjects and issues for our times–climate change, Indigenous life-ways, values, survival, food, water, religious influences et. al., I decided it was worth sending up a blogcasa flagpole. What would you do if your church told you to not adapt to the changing environment? Do you keep doing what doesn’t work? Or do you change, adapt and learn new skills in order to survive and thrive?
