Swinging and Singing on the Sidebar

If you’re in search of an up beat for your feet today, then explore the music on the sidebar–that vertical column area to the left of the main post text. Aside from Chopin’s Nocturnes, Catch 22, Martin Luther King’s speech “Beyond Vietnam” and Medicine Buddha song/mantra the offerings are new discoveries and explorations for moi. The Speakeasy Three harken back to a bygone era and make it all their own–as do all the other vocalists and dancers. Some of them fall into the music genre of electro-techno swing–which is quite a lot of fun for my feet. Might be for yours too. I had some fun comparing and contrasting the videos as small and full scree for the visual fun. This isn’t a full blown Music Theme post, but it works fairly well by default. Enjoy.  If you’re in search of a music theme just surf the links via my last Music Theme post to explore what’s playing elsewhere.  Okay, I’ve got eggs to poach  .  .  .  .

Al Dubois

Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945 — January 13, 1979) was an American soul musician.

Hathaway contracted with Atlantic Records in 1969 and with his first single for the Atco label, “The Ghetto, Part I” in early 1970, Rolling Stone magazine “marked him as a major new force in soul music.”His collaborations with Roberta Flack scored high on the charts and won him the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for the duet, “Where Is the Love” in 1973. Six years later, his body was found outside the luxury hotel Essex House in New York City; his death was ruled a suicide.

Lyrics

If I ever leave you….you can say I told you so!
And if I ever hurt you baby….. you know I hurt myself as well.

Is that any way for a man to carry on
Do you think I want my loved one gone
Said I love you
More than you’ll ever know
More than you’ll ever know

When I wasn’t making much money
You know where my paycheck went
You know I brought it home to baby
And I never spent a red cent

Is that any way for a man to carry on
Do you think I want my loved one gone
Said I love you
More than you’ll ever know
More than you’ll ever know

I’m not trying to be
just any kind of man
I’m just trying to be somebody
You can love, trust and understand
I know that I can be
yeaaahhhh
A part of you that no one else could see

I just wanna hear,a hear ya say
its allright
yeahhh yeahhh

I’m only flesh and blood
But I can be everything that you demand
I can be king of everythang
Or just a tiny grain of sand

Is that anyway for a man to carry on
Do you think he wants his little loved one gone
I love you baby, i love you baby
i love youMore than you’ll ever know

If I ever leave you….you can say I told you so!
And if I ever hurt you ….. you know I hurt myself as well.

Is that anyway for a man to carry on
Do you think he wants his little loved one gone
I treid to tell ya I love you baby, i love you baby
yea i love you baby
i love you More than you’ll ever know

i love you
i love you
i love you baby!!

i told you so many times before
I love you
I love

Dreaming Dreamer Dreams ~ Music Theme Dream 5 January 2014

We all dream. Even if we don’t recall what we’ve been doing or where we’ve been, we’re all busy during all those sleeping hours–and the waking ones as well. How often do you stop and consider just what your dream-life is trying to communicate? Do you take time out to day dream at will? Are you haunted by dark nightmare dreams? Do dreams fuel your creative engines? Or do they allow you to vicariously experience strange and wonderful things beyond the scope of your comfort zone? Where do you dream of wandering? What’s in any dream? Have your dreams ever taken you into unknown territory in your waking life? Dreaming can be a very dangerous thing depending on where the dreams lead. Or not. I guess that depends on what’s in your dream packages.

“Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?”

Dreamer ~ Low Roar ~ Ryan Karazija ~ His live version is equally compelling, but the audio has a slightly more intense quality on this track. Or perhaps this is because simply offering the song encourages you to close your eyes and focus on the sound and lyrics without the visual component.

Love You More  ~ Tresspassers William

Nela Cotrim :

Published on Sep 30, 2012

Trespassers William was an indie rock/dream pop band known for its ethereal music. Originally from Southern California, they moved to the Sodo/Capitol Hill area of Seattle, Washington.
Formed in Orange County, California in 1997, Trespassers William released four albums and two E.P.’s. Anchor (1999) appeared on Sonikwire Records and is now out of print. Different Stars was self-released in 2002 and was re-released twice — most recently on Nettwerk Records on October 19, 2004. In early 2004, the band moved to Seattle. Their third album, Having, (mixed by the Flaming Lips producer, Dave Fridmann) was released on February 28, 2006. The band toured the United States and Europe several times, including a U.K. tour with Damien Rice and a festival appearance in Spain with Morrissey. The band’s music attracted modest press coverage and exposure, most notably in British magazines such as NME and Uncut and was featured on such television shows as One Tree Hill, The O.C., Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Felicity, and movies such as A Love Song for Bobby Long and Annapolis.
The band disbanded at the beginning of 2012. A b-sides and rarities collection titled Cast, which also contains an expanded edition of their 2009 EP The Natural Order of Things, is scheduled to be released by Saint Marie Records on September 4, 2012. Anna-Lynne Williams continues to write and record as Lotte Kestner and one half of the duo Ormonde. Matt Brown is working on more Disinterested material and is playing with and producing several other groups.
Matt Brown — guitar and keyboards Anna-Lynne Williams — vocals and guitar Josh Gordon — bass guitar, drums, percussion, guitar Ross Simonini — bass guitar and keyboards Nathan Skolrud — drums, bass guitar, and keyboards Jamie Williams — drums

HAMLET:
To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, ’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub;

Music Theme for 25 December ~ Joyeux Noel ?

It’s THAT time of year:  The holy time for many in many different places and languages. It’s a time of year I personally find very troubling and unsettling in many ways. It is perhaps the time of year of the most discordance between reality and what may simply be a willing suspension of disbelief of reality. I’m not sure what to make of it even after all my time spent on this planet in this life.  This is not a new state of questioning mental affairs for moi. It’s like  a very well-worn pair of dress shoes that still are very uncomfortable. Much is done in love and caring in this time of year. Much is also done in violence and uncaring at this time and the rest of the year.  There does not seem to be a balance as far as I can tell. Hence. I will not claim or praise that some things like peace, goodwill and love towards others exists when it clearly does not at large. A state of global affairs which is possibly due to lack of will. Or perhaps its lack is due to flawed human nature. I’m not sure.  I do know there is not peace on earth, nor is there enough good will among men and women to make it so.  I wish there was.  Perhaps one day there will be. I wish it was already. Peace to you and yours.

A story inspired by a shoe-doll displayed in Childhood Museum, Edinburgh. This short film shows a touching story about a young girl and her father in a poverty, London, 1910s. Qian Shi’s BA Animation graduation film. The Best Student Film of BAF08. MX Award at TAF2010 (Tokyo Anime Fair 2010).

“The Museum of Childhood Edinburgh has plentiful collections of dolls, toys, and other remnants of youth. On a visit there 2005, I found an old doll made from a shoe. It was not very remarkable compared with the other beautiful dolls on display, but it is still very eye-catching. The introduction reads: Doll made from an old shoe that belonged to a poor child from the London slums in 1905.

I couldn’t help imagining the little girl who could barely afford a pair of shoes taking comfort in this lovely shoe-doll friend who accompanies her sweetest dreams. The shoe-doll became a symbol to me of beloved and colourful childhood.

I decided I wanted to tell a story of this little shoe-doll.”

What’s Love Got to Do? Musical Theme for Friday, the 13th of December 2013.

So what’s love got to do with everything? Ask the very incredible Tina Turner, I’m sure she can do more than sing about it. But hear here we’re starting off with a song by an artist well-known for her Celtic treatments, Connie Dover.  Last Night By The River is decidedly not Celtic. It’s based on a Shoshone ‘song’ and it differs decidedly from all the other tracks on The Border of Heaven which offers other love songs, all of which have been sung by others elsewhere–except the song I’ve selected.

Summer Kisses Winter Tears ~ Julee Cruise  ~ Laura Manuel’s description says a lot. Tears of the Black Tiger is also a love story. It’s different. It’s Thai. I love it. The song sings for itself. Oh there are wonderful waterlily images in this film which make it a must for visual artists. The clip does not do the imagery justice.

Tears of the Black Tiger is a 2000 Thai western film written and directed by Wisit Sasanatieng.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION:
It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Can not think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It is a long and short
It lasts forever, it will be remembered.

It is said that twenty years it is the king of the world
And there will be eternally in our eyes
All the blue sky.

It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Can not think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It puts you in the heart
Much warmth and happiness.

One day it’s love and the heart beats faster,
Because life goes on
And we are quite happy to be in love.

It’s time to love,
Time for friends and adventure.
When the time comes and goes,
Cannot think of anything despite his injuries.
For the love of time
It is a long and short
It lasts forever, it will be remembered.

Oh, no, I’m not done yet. You’ve met Donne in the prompt post for this theme.  I wonder who would have the musical chops to set Donne’s love songs to music? Any suggestions?

A Love Letter In This Digital Age: Music Theme ~ Love ~ for Friday the 13th of December.

Music Theme for December 13. Yes, that’s a Friday. I say we defy Friday the 13th with Love.

Inclined to offer more than music? Please feel free to incorporate whatever trips your love trap.  No, it is not my intention to confine Love to only the romantic variety. Though you certainly may do so.  Explore however you are so inclined.  Feel free to mix media–music and film videos, poetry, prose, visual art. Incorporate your own work and the works of others. If you will, think of this as an online Love Letter drawing upon and going in any and all directions that inspire you.

By John Donne 1572–1631 John Donne

For God’s sake hold your tongue, and let me love,
Or chide my palsy, or my gout,
My five gray hairs, or ruined fortune flout,
With wealth your state, your mind with arts improve,
Take you a course, get you a place,
Observe his honor, or his grace,
Or the king’s real, or his stampèd face
         Contemplate; what you will, approve,
So you will let me love.
Alas, alas, who’s injured by my love?
What merchant’s ships have my sighs drowned?
Who says my tears have overflowed his ground?
When did my colds a forward spring remove?
When did the heats which my veins fill
Add one more to the plaguy bill?
Soldiers find wars, and lawyers find out still
         Litigious men, which quarrels move,
Though she and I do love.
Call us what you will, we are made such by love;
Call her one, me another fly,
We’re tapers too, and at our own cost die,
And we in us find the eagle and the dove.
The phœnix riddle hath more wit
By us; we two being one, are it.
So, to one neutral thing both sexes fit.
We die and rise the same, and prove
         Mysterious by this love.
We can die by it, if not live by love,
And if unfit for tombs and hearse
Our legend be, it will be fit for verse;
And if no piece of chronicle we prove,
                We’ll build in sonnets pretty rooms;
As well a well-wrought urn becomes
The greatest ashes, as half-acre tombs,
And by these hymns, all shall approve
         Us canonized for Love.
And thus invoke us: “You, whom reverend love
         Made one another’s hermitage;
You, to whom love was peace, that now is rage;
Who did the whole world’s soul contract, and drove
Into the glasses of your eyes
(So made such mirrors, and such spies,
That they did all to you epitomize)
Countries, towns, courts: beg from above
         A pattern of your love!”

In case you’re in the dark about Donne. He was not a one poem hit wonder. The man delivered the poetic goods time and time again. He had The Right Stuff from start to finish. Yeah, I think he’s a damn cool poet even though he’s been dead for a few centuries.
*
Note:
On his way to a promising career, John Donne became a Member of Parliament in 1601. That same year, he married 16-year-old Anne More, the niece of Sir Egerton. Both Lord Egerton and Anne’s father, George More, strongly disapproved of the marriage, and, as punishment, More did not provide a dowry. Lord Egerton fired Donne and had him imprisoned for a short time. The eight years following Donne’s release would be a struggle for the married couple until Anne’s father finally paid her dowry.

More and Less. Or, Is It Supposed To Be Less or More? Musical Theme. An Open Invitation to Geese and More. Less War desired.

More and Less

Hm…ahhh yes, about that…more and less idea–hmm that’s a wide open invitation. This selection has gone through several incarnations from the wretched to the sublime–sort of –well, Calling All Angels is sublime, isn’t it? It’s not here. ONE got me going in another direction entirely, but this isn’t quite jelly by any means. The entire value concept of 1 the number impressed itself upon my grey matter long enough to get an evolution to unity.  Then, well, things took a few detours.  Mental distractions abound. The range here is from the individual to the national to the global–ha. Is that crazy or what? Plus, there are geese. Now, I don’t want to get into it about why those geese and their song are here. They are. Live with it. Accept it. Once they found their way into this blogcasa, they refused to leave. I refuse to herd them out. So the geese are here to stay. That’s all there is to it, folks. I like them. Of course you can argue that this is a Music Theme about More and Less and that you don’t see or hear how those geese qualify.  Make it easy on all of us and just consider them in the More category. Okay? They add a certain nonsensical ambiance which I require at the moment. Give them time and they’ll grow on you too. I’m sure of it.

Now I’m fairly certain the Mores and Lesses are self-explanatory. If they’re not, please feel free to place an inquiry in the comments boxes below the posting. Yes, down there. No, you don’t have to go to Australia to get down under the post. But you can if you really feel the need.

Less, less, less all around. Oh 1989 may seem outdated to some folks, but I think memories need refreshing just as much as computer pages.  The organizers of this bid for freedom paid a high price in general. So much for the free world . . . .. Geese are leaving this to the Peking ducks.

Less of all the issues regarding the handling of this event. I think the video maker is very clear about those issues. Offended? Well, isn’t that the point? These aren’t the only people left to hang out to dry by the people who ought to help them.  They represent so many others around the world affected by callous indifference of their government leaders.  Geese are steering clear for the moment.

Guess what the Less is.  Guess what the More is. No, it’s not those synchronized beats of the musical and violent kind.  Geese? Not so much. But the ones I’ve met have always been willing to bite for food–or what they want to be food.

More regional unity through music.  We’re back to some oneness. Right? No, the geese have no vote here.

La Tierra Del Olvido   ~ Playing for Change

PlayingForChange

http://playingforchange.com – Today we are proud to share a new video titled, “La Tierra Del Olvido” (The Land of The Forgotten), featured on our PFC 2 CD/DVD. This video features over 75 musicians across the country of Colombia. Throughout our journey we have learned that music is the greatest tool for healing broken countries, cultures and hearts. With this video we set our to unite and inspire the people of Colombia so they can move forward from years of conflict and create a positive future. Listen to the music, see the smiling faces and remember we are going to make it as a human race!! One Love, Mark

Okay, Mark, the geese and I will entertain some hope for the human race while listening to Playing for Change.

More, more, more — no music, well a little,  just Urban Farming Guys in Action showing what CAN be done. Yes, it’s not just a world of abstract possibilities. It’s a world of concrete manifestation too. That’s why the Urban Farming Guys are ‘here’.  When they make a music video I’ll share it.  Yeah, um, do they do geese? I’ll check.

Catch Some Heat Rays ~ “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” ~~Music Theme

Ahhh this Music Theme selection process was nearly derailed twice. First by the film Sunshine and then by the ever delightful Doctor Who. Yep, I almost gave up all control and followed my slacker heart straight to full video view-ville. Making blog posts is a funny job and someone has got to do this one–moi.

Doctor Who 42  [As in 42 minutes to keep a spaceship from going straight into the center of the sun.]~ scene 14. There were several scenes I could have posted with exciting music, but I decided on this one because of what The Doctor learns and the rest of us ought to consider every time we take that great big sun in the sky for granted.

When There Is No Sun  ~ Sun Ra ~ And if there’s no sun what do you do?  Tough to grow your veggies for sure. Nothing for all those methane producing cattle to chew on either.
