Shadows — with strings, violin of course.

~ Lisa selected Shadows for this week’s musical theme.

I’ll be updating as I work a few (a lot) kinks out of my grey matter. Highly distracted of late.

Who Dwells Where ~~ Winter Solstice Musical Theme

Consider this a fully non-linear intuitive selection based solely upon very subjective personal engagement.  Each piece in its own way connects to dwelling in, between and beyond in some fashion. I’ve decided not to elaborate or comment on these in order to leave it open for your ears and eyes.  Much thanks to Simon for lending his poem Turned, Gone On to this Musical Theme posting.

Lyrics

We fell from a dying tree
We wait for it to leave
I wanna be, I wanna be
Leave ashes for borrowed instruments and borrowed hearts
We will pass them on to every saint and dead lover
I have my God so give me my ghosts

Sons and daughters,
may you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters,
may you kill what my blind heart could not
Sons and daughters,
may you kill

I saw your grandfather’s death on the news
Remembered when you took me to your room
You put your hand over your chest
Swore that the fire would rage

Whoa I…
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
I put my hand over my chest, sons and daughters
Swore that the fire would rage

Yeah, you know better ways to fall
Yeah, you know better ways to fall
You know better ways to fall
You knock me down, knock me down
Put my cold hand over my cold heart
Turn the fire and die whoa
Turn the fire and die whoa
Turn the fire to die

TURNED, GONE ON (requiem)

Stillness now, lost blue and empty silence.
After wracked storm, tearing breath,
Tangled rain. The howling
Has ceased, calm, calm.

Where sun reaches, there
Is hope of a little warmth.
But little warmth in shade,
Little warmth when the face
Turns away from light.

Calm void where you have gone,
Spacious, rested, freed from pain of time.
Naked void where you were,
Are, no longer.
The empty fields,
The stiff sloped horizon,
The days ahead unformed, vast.

These winter roads
Will lead to a surprise of spring,
But not soon, not soon.
Not before the world becomes ragged.
It must become ready, choosing, too,
Letting go what is,
Letting uncertainty bloom.
Too tired to breathe
One last slow, drawn out,
Whispered breath.

The void of skies
Fills slowly with new cloud dreams.
The scoured earth will clothe its scars
In new skins of green life.
The hollows will slowly fill,
The woods, they will be bound in birdsong.
It will become gentle, dancing once more.
But not soon,
Not soon.

Classical? Will Chopin, a little cello, The Pianist from Warsaw Radio, and maybe a train ride do it for you? ~ Oh yes, of course, this is a Music Theme for December 18, 2013.

Perhaps I should say a few words about how and why we’re here in classical music land. Or maybe not. Johnny picked it. Yes, the R.E.M man selected this Classical Music Theme.  Time for a non sequitur: I’m partial to certain music at certain times. While doing this post I indulged in Chopin, animation and a piece about history which found its way into book and film art via The Pianist.  One could truly go wild with this classical theme. Let’s face it, we could be all over the globe with classic this and classical that. At the moment, about all I can muster is a slow waltz. But the once scandalous waltz is better than nothing, is it not?

On The Waltz from Wikipedia  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waltz

In the 1771 German novel Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim by Sophie von La Roche, a high-minded character complains about the newly introduced waltz among aristocrats thus: “But when he put his arm around her, pressed her to his breast, cavorted with her in the shameless, indecent whirling-dance of the Germans and engaged in a familiarity that broke all the bounds of good breeding—then my silent misery turned into burning rage.”[4]

~~

Shocking many when it was first introduced,[10] the waltz became fashionable in Vienna around the 1780s, spreading to many other countries in the years to follow. It became fashionable inBritain during the Regency period, having been made respectable by the endorsement of Dorothea Lieven, wife of the Russian ambassador.[11]Almack’s, the most exclusive club in London, permitted the waltz from about 1812 on, though the entry in the Oxford English Dictionary shows that it was considered “riotous and indecent” as late as 1825.

What would they make of Lady Gaga and Madonna and the rest of the sex song singers? Hmm. There might be a lot of bonfires……..

Mandelbrot Fractal Zoom: Bach, Fractals and the Art of Fugue —Fractals, math art, oh yeah, music deals with numbers and a lot of them. Huh, who knew? Maybe that’s why children who receive some form of music instruction while in school get stimulated to do things.  Oh I’m not saying what kind of things. Just things. Like thinking and such.

Harlan Brothers :

There is a poetic connection between the music of Bach and the famous fractal known as the Mandelbrot set. Bach’s compositions represented the height of Baroque sensibilities; intricacy, nested levels of adornment, and the suggestion of infinite space were compelling structural properties in the art and architecture of his day.

The Lone Ranger & Tonto versus the Iron Horse Makers aka The Corrupt Military Industrial Complex ~~ Does Disney have any clue what a subversive film The Lone Ranger truly is?  I sincerely doubt it.  Neither do a lot of people who post bs on online about Depp’s makeup and the rest of the basically unimportant shyte. The important shyte is what’s going on–and still going– with the military industrial complex’s death grip on the world.  As for the music and the film, well,  hold onto your hat, because these guys are playing with dynamite! Not to mention that gun inside Red’s leg.

I can’t help but return to Chopin and a touch of history portrayed in film with this last piece. Here everything comes together–the actual pianist playing the music of specific historical moment in time. Can you imagine playing anything while under military attack?

Wladyslaw Szpilman (Wladek) played this music in the last live broadcast for the Polish Radio on 23.9.1939 . An hour later German bombs destroyed its power supply and the Warsaw Radio closed for long 6 years.

~~~~~~
Speaking of Warsaw Radio  — There is a new band which takes its name from the musicians who played on the Warsaw Radio Station in 1939. I stumbled upon the band while searching for another info video regarding the historical radio station. You can discover them online —>> http://www.warsaw-radio.com/ . Oh and they’re currently performing in the side bar videos. Their most recent video release is Light Up The Night and it’s headlining the recent post list aka mixed relish. Their music is  not classical, but the connection to the last musical selection above warrants drawing a line to their dot.
Thanks Johnny.  I might never have discovered Warsaw Radio if not for your Classical Music Theme choice, and my own adherence to Dirk Gently’s holistic detective paradigm.  True story.  Yeah.
The San Patricios Battalion
Sung By: David Rovics http://www.davidrovics.com/
SAN PATRICIOS – THE IRISHMEN WHO DIED FOR MEXICO
Saint Patrick’s Battalion, “The San Patricios,” a notable arm of the Mexican Army during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848.
Dubious about why they were fighting a Catholic country and fed up with mistreatment by their Anglo-Protestant officers, hundreds of Irish, German and other immigrants deserted Taylor’s army and joined forces with Mexico.
Led by Capt. John Riley of Co. Galway, they called themselves the St. Patrick’s Battalion (in Spanish, the San Patricios) and fought against their former comrades in all the major campaigns of the war.
The history of the San Patricios is a woeful tale of angry, bewildered, naive, or calculating young men, from varied backgrounds, who deserted for a myriad of reasons and paid a fearful price.
The San Patricios, in the words of one Mexican general, “deserved the highest praise, because they fought with daring bravery.” But eventually, Mexico surrendered, ceding almost half its territory to the United States.
Each San Patricio who deserted from the US side was interned after the war in Mexico and subsequently given an individual court-martial trial. Many of the Irish were set free, but some paid the ultimate price. Roughly half of the San Patricio defectors who were executed by the US for desertion were Irish
The Doors  ~ Light My Fire,  live 1968
*
Electric Six is here because, well damn it, I’ve had to listen to this song by Electric Six a lot by default. By default, I mean that it’s a favorite of someone in my abode and hence is played OFTEN.  What’s the point of demanding and support freedom of thought and expression if you don’t follow through in your own home domain? Not much in my opinion. After years of exposure to the song and the video it was no surprise to moi that Danger! High Voltage came immediately to my brain-pan when I read that Bear’s theme choice was Fire. Honestly, “Fire in the disco!” was instantly on the scene.  It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it has been listened to and viewed with many cups of tea at hand for perhaps its number one fan with a mouse at their disposal.  I have no idea what Grandmother Fire would make of this video beyond the fact that, yeah it is base human nature to “keep starting fires.”
Note: “Play” at your risk, potentially offensive language and image contents for some sensibilities. Or maybe not?
Electric Six  ~Danger! High Voltage
*
Next, so much for The Good Old Days– Not so much, methinks.
Note: Very Strong offensive language content.   What do you expect from a song about going to hell? Polite conversation? Not here. Not now. Not today, anyway.
A popular pumping chantey, this was actually the last chantey sung aboard a commercial British square-rigger, by Stan Hugill in 1929, as the barque Garthpool was pumped out for the last time. There are a number of versions, and in some the “fire down below” is more explicitly a reference to venereal disease.
