Okay, some sexy love fun is in order and, well, the photographs sing their own song. John Lee Hooker just ices the cakes. Hmm.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen high heels quite like the ones in the very last image of this video. Ladies, the last set of heels is all yours.  Homage to the sensual side of love–with a lot of legs. Yes,  a lot of legs. I think we have some idea of what appeals to this particular incarnation of “Irene Adler.” And to many of the rest of us.

It ought to be easy to find a translation of a song’s lyrics, right? Not so with In The Forest, a Polish tune.  Apparently the words cause even modern native speakers some grief because this is not modern Polish.  Best I can figure is that perhaps there’s some questions about if the guy deserves what happens to him–and, the thought “shit happens.” You’ll have to watch to the very end to get that last thought via an image. At least that ‘s how I’m interpreting it right now.  It’s bit of a walk on the dark side of romantic relationships. Just a bit. Don’t be dissuaded from listening because you don’t know Polish and there are no lyrics. The images tell a very familiar girl and boy story. I have no doubt you will recognize it.

Drive Elevator Scene ~ The Kiss ~ composer Cliff Martinez ~  Heads up, if you’re squeamish,  then stop watching for a short time, don’t stop listening or you’ll miss out, after the kiss while the music is in transition. If you have not viewed the film Drive, which is a truly great film, then I highly recommend it. Mary Poppins it is not.  That said, what would you do to protect those you love? Also, yes, Ryan Gosling’s character knows the man in the elevator is a hit man and he knows he has fatal intentions. He steps into the elevator knowing. These are not random acts. Everything has intention.  I cannot think of another film kiss that can compare with this one. If you can, I invite you to share it. Furthermore, there are clips of this scene set to other music by fans. I don’t know why they bother because Martinez’s score here is flawless for sheer emotive power in my opinion. Everything matters in this scene, every image, every look, every sound.

What’s Love Got to Do? Musical Theme for Friday, the 13th of December 2013.

So what’s love got to do with everything? Ask the very incredible Tina Turner, I’m sure she can do more than sing about it. But hear here we’re starting off with a song by an artist well-known for her Celtic treatments, Connie Dover.  Last Night By The River is decidedly not Celtic. It’s based on a Shoshone ‘song’ and it differs decidedly from all the other tracks on The Border of Heaven which offers other love songs, all of which have been sung by others elsewhere–except the song I’ve selected.

Summer Kisses Winter Tears ~ Julee Cruise  ~ Laura Manuel’s description says a lot. Tears of the Black Tiger is also a love story. It’s different. It’s Thai. I love it. The song sings for itself. Oh there are wonderful waterlily images in this film which make it a must for visual artists. The clip does not do the imagery justice.

Ahhh this Music Theme selection process was nearly derailed twice. First by the film Sunshine and then by the ever delightful Doctor Who. Yep, I almost gave up all control and followed my slacker heart straight to full video view-ville. Making blog posts is a funny job and someone has got to do this one–moi.


Doctor Who 42  [As in 42 minutes to keep a spaceship from going straight into the center of the sun.]~ scene 14. There were several scenes I could have posted with exciting music, but I decided on this one because of what The Doctor learns and the rest of us ought to consider every time we take that great big sun in the sky for granted.

A Few Trips for All Hallows Eve Traps–Mind the sound wires, please.

I can’t seem to get too far from horror films for this All Hallows Eve theme just yet.  All of this could change, be revised soon after it hits the blog casa- or not. I’ve kept close to things that give me the willies, which might not be the same things that give the rest of you the willies.  There are a lot of strange things going for the scare-the-hair-off-you brass ring for the picking and biting.

Sebastian and a group of friends plan to rob a train using a deadly sleeping gas, only for their worst fears to materialize in the form of a Polish myth.

This allegorical and surreal look at Polish culture as seen through the eyes of a younger generation is both terrifying and strange.

*The absolutely great thing about the film 28 Days Later is that about midway through the film it turns neatly from one kind of horror film into an even more terrifying one based on human nature rather than grisly zombies.  Prior to this point you’ve got plenty to actually think about in regards to survival issues. After the film worm turns, well, there’s an exploration of things that may stick in your brain-pan much longer than the zombie scenes.  The trailer is to provide a look at the film. The theme –well, it’s a great piece of music by itself in many ways.

What can I say except the film trailers for Night Watch and Day Watch are pure self-indulgence on my part.  If you’re looking for some film entertainment to get serious about for the dark holy day’s night, then you might enjoy Night Watch and Day Watch as much as I do. Yes, they’re Russian flicks-and yes, they do live up the trailers.  Careful that the visuals don’t hypnotize you into forgetting the story line. Hmm. Light versus Dark eternally.

Oh this Swedish vampire film takes the entire cake-walk in my movie book list. I have not seen the American remake.  Usually American remakes of great foreign films are very disappointing. Though I have heard this time around it’s not. But, if I’m going to watch a film more than once, well, I’ll Let the Right One In be the best one.

Arnheim (1986) once speculated that different aesthetic domains (e.g., color and music) might be related to each other through common emotional associations. We investigated this hypothesis by having participants pick from among an array of 37 colors the five colors that went best (and later the five that went worst) with each of a set of 18 brief samples of classical orchestral music that varied in composer (Bach/Mozart/Brahms), tempo (slow/medium/fast), and mode (major/minor). They also rated each musical selection and each color for its emotional associations (happy-sad, lively-dreary, strong-weak, angry-calm). Systematic mappings were found between the dimensions of color and music: faster music and major mode were associated with lighter, more saturated, yellower colors, whereas slower music and minor mode were associated with darker, desaturated, bluer colors. More precisely controlled musical stimuli (single-line melodies by Mozart on a synthesized piano) produced more refined relations between the music and the colors chosen to go with them. These color-music mappings are mediated by common emotional associations, because the correlation between emotional ratings of the musical selections and emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them were extremely high (.90 to .98) for all emotional dimensions studied (e.g., people picked happy colors to go with happy music and dreary colors to go with dreary music). The mediating role of emotion was established by obtaining analogous effects when people picked the colors that went best (and worst) with faces and body poses that expressed emotions (happy-sad and angry-calm). Similarly high correlations were obtained when the emotional ratings of the faces/gestures were compared with corresponding emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them. Further findings identify a stable aesthetic difference between people in terms of their level of “preference for harmony” across the domains of color combinations, musical compositions, shape preferences, and spatial composition within a rectangular frame.

Two thieves steal a young man’s bag in the train. To their disappointment, there are only underground leaflets printed on the home printer. The thieves’ victim gets arrested at the next train station. One of the thieves shows unexpected nobleness.

The story of the writing boards where the striking Gdansk Shipyard workers – with the two students’s help – wrote their demands and hung them on the main shipyard gate. On the first day of the martial law in Poland, the secret police stole the boards from the Maritime Museum. They did not know that they stole fake ones. The real ones were taken and hidden earlier by the museum’s curator.

In the summer 1980, the group of three polish cave explorers becomes stranded underground. While waiting for help, they learn about signing the Gdansk Agreement between the workers and the government. It starts the discussuion about economical and political situation in Poland, about their hopes and dreams. Among the cave explorers is student Janek, means Jan Jakub Kolski – the director of this film.

Janusz is trying to sell huge plastic ballpens with a picture of Pope JohnPaul II on them, but he is not very succesfull. His business improves significantly when Lech Wałęsa, a Solidarity leader, signs the Gdansk Agreement with such a ballpen.

In August 1980, Filip and Tomek meet in the train going to the Coast. They both read “The Little Apocalypse” by Tadeusz Konwicki. Filip carries a petrol can with him. Tomek suspects that Filip wants to butrn himself alive, so he tries to stop him.

W sierpniu 1980 r. w pociągu jadącym na Wybrzeże spotykają się dwaj młodzi ludzie: Tomek i Filip. Obaj czytają “Małą apokalipsę” Tadeusza Konwickiego. Filip wiezie ze sobą kanister z benzyną. W trakcie rozmowy Tomek nabiera przekonania, że współpasażer chce dokonać samospalenia. W żarliwych słowach próbuje go powstrzymać.

In this short quasi-documentary, Krzysztof Zanussi ponders back to the winter of 1981 when he was shooting “From the Far Country”, the biography of John Paul II. In one of the scenes, when the extras were supposed to put on military German or Soviet Uniforms, everybody wanted to get the German one.

“Landscape” by Robert Gliński shows the Gdans Shipyard as it is seen today: engine rroms covered with rust, empty docks and garbage flying in the air. This is a sad metaphor of what happen with “Solidarity”. There are only groups of international tourists who fill the space that used to be the place of origin of “Solidarity”. Most of the old workers are unemployed now.

“Krajobraz” Roberta Glińskiego ukazuje dzisiejszy obraz Stoczni Gdańskiej będący przygnębiającą metaforą tego, co stało się z “Solidarnością”. Rdzewiejące hale, puste doki, śmieci unoszone wiatrem. Po historycznej kolebce związku kręcą się tylko zagraniczne wycieczki. Dawni pracownicy są w większości bezrobotni.

This is an animated short film collage telling the story about the white board with the characteristic red sign “Solidarity” on it. After times of fight and euphoria of victory, the old symbols get forgotten. The white board with “Solidarity” sign is put for sale, but finally it lands in the prop room.

This film is a video recorded meeting between the director of “The Man of Iron”, Andrzej Wajda, and actors Krystyna Janda and Jerzy Radziwiłłowicz, who played main characters in “The Man of Iron”, with Lech Wałęsa, the Solidarity leader. The meeting took place in the huge, empty screening room of the “Neptun” theatre in Gdansk. In August 1980, when Wałęsa congratulated Wajda for making a great film about the August Events, he encouraged the famous director to shoot another film titled “The Man of Hope”, but it never happened. What would it be such film today?

In this dramatized short documentary, the director Małgorzata Szumowska utilized the archival films shot by her father, a well-known documentary filmmaker. A 30-year-old woman tells the story how “Solidarity” influenced her family’s life, particularly her idealistic father’s one. He never benefited directly from the political changes. His only reward is that his daughter lives in a free country.

Trzydziestoletnia kobieta opowiada o tym, jak “Solidarność” zmieniła życie jej rodziny, a zwłaszcza ojca – idealisty, któremu przemiany polityczne nie przyniosły żadnych bezpośrednich korzyści. Jedyną nagrodą jest życie jego córki w wolnym kraju.
