Hey, so yeah, for today LP’s voice is tickling my eardrums enough to wind up here as an introductory post for anyone who didn’t catch her Into the Wild Official Video previously  in The Wild post. I’ve included three interview videos to give some small sense of her.

Here’s a Wikipedia link for background information about LP  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.P._(singer)  For the music information collectors among you, it’s a starting point for learning about a voice that in 2006  “. . . sparked a bidding war amongst major labels. ” Listen to the Halo track (currently at the top of the side-bar) and there’s no denying her incredible power, range and emotive abilities which seem so effortless upon delivery.

Musical Theme: Fire Ascent to the Higher Realms ~~ Sort of Sure Something Here Could Offend Someone Somewhere But Hear’s Hoping Not.

Okay, well, after a technical ‘fail’  this post is back–almost–minus one until found again. Definitely without all my chatter about it –for the moment.

Yes, this is the Ascent for Fire. I guess the first posting effort ascended somewhere other than ‘here.’

Now, interesting side notes to this post that doesn’t want to stay grounded:–I selected these pieces first. But my commentary for those other selections in that other post was completed first. Not sure I want to start reading anything into any of this, but it might be telling–or not.

For now.

Serpent of Fire

Raven Lythrum

Lyrics
Serpent of Fire
Lyrics by Ricky Asmodeous and Raven Lythrum
Composed by Raven Lythrum

Your presence magnifies
A journey that shall not repeat
Part of it is you, and all of it is me
A potent energy, that set’s my wings free
I fly without thinking, you’ve set me free

Light all the embers
Set there a fire
Deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Drown me in water
My soul has grown dire
deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Is the serpent of fire

As I calm my mind I ascend
Burning on without an end
The seals have been torn away
I feel the heat and consummate
Through serpents eyes I rise, ignoring outside lies
Turning the led to gold, breaking the enemies hold

Light all the embers
Set there a fire
Deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Drown me in water
My soul has grown dire
deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Is the serpent of fire

The serpent shall blend and will mend
My mind as my soul ascends
The lies have been cleared from my path
So don’t run away from the past

Light all the embers
Set there a fire
Deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Drown me in water
My soul has grown dire
deep in my heart lies my soul’s desire
Is the serpent of fire

Flame Dance

Two flames dance into the night One steps to the left, the other leaps right Winds of change provide food for flight No way of knowing what sparks may ignite

Separating… merging… as if on cue Dressed in golds and red-hot blues Tempestuous, breath-taking, move after move No plan, no rehearsal… It’s die or do

Each step, each flame, fueled by desire She builds him up, he lifts her higher Mesmerized gazes wonder what will transpire Will they simply burn out? or spread like wildfire?

breathe in….           step left…. breathe out….            leap higher

breathe in….                              burn out….                        breathe in….                               burn brighter

Crows: Black, Dancing and Counting Everywhere! Catch Them If You Dare.

In case you haven’t already guessed there seems to be no end to the music about, referencing and associating with Black Crows.  This post could go on and on and on. I focused on black crows, and a raven, in order to create some cohesion for myself.  I hope there is little overlap between Bear, Willow, Johnny and myself in regard to our choices for this theme because there is so much sky to cover here.  Though I will be very surprised if Johnny and I don’t cover at least one musical selection. There’s a vast array of music, poetry, art, research, science and all the ways in which people record their observations and interactions with the Crow in their daily lives.  This post could simple fly away with me if I let it.    Kaw Kaw

Color, Music, and Emotion

GoogleTechTalks

June 30, 2011

Presented by Stephen E. Palmer
Professor of the Graduate School
Psychology & Cognitive Science
University of California, Berkeley

ABSTRACT

Arnheim (1986) once speculated that different aesthetic domains (e.g., color and music) might be related to each other through common emotional associations. We investigated this hypothesis by having participants pick from among an array of 37 colors the five colors that went best (and later the five that went worst) with each of a set of 18 brief samples of classical orchestral music that varied in composer (Bach/Mozart/Brahms), tempo (slow/medium/fast), and mode (major/minor). They also rated each musical selection and each color for its emotional associations (happy-sad, lively-dreary, strong-weak, angry-calm). Systematic mappings were found between the dimensions of color and music: faster music and major mode were associated with lighter, more saturated, yellower colors, whereas slower music and minor mode were associated with darker, desaturated, bluer colors. More precisely controlled musical stimuli (single-line melodies by Mozart on a synthesized piano) produced more refined relations between the music and the colors chosen to go with them. These color-music mappings are mediated by common emotional associations, because the correlation between emotional ratings of the musical selections and emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them were extremely high (.90 to .98) for all emotional dimensions studied (e.g., people picked happy colors to go with happy music and dreary colors to go with dreary music). The mediating role of emotion was established by obtaining analogous effects when people picked the colors that went best (and worst) with faces and body poses that expressed emotions (happy-sad and angry-calm). Similarly high correlations were obtained when the emotional ratings of the faces/gestures were compared with corresponding emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them. Further findings identify a stable aesthetic difference between people in terms of their level of “preference for harmony” across the domains of color combinations, musical compositions, shape preferences, and spatial composition within a rectangular frame.

There are some days when I  am so glad YouTube has thrived since its early start-up days. This is one of those days. Damn, the GREAT! music you can discover with a clicking mouse.  I wish I could reward it with a meal treat.  Yes, I do MISS the large independent music store that has closed down. It had wonderful listening stations for all kinds of music. It had fun quirky staff, music lovers all. It was a place to meet face to face. That is lost on the net no matter how much you skype or mumble. It’s not the same as engaging with a real live breathing other member of our species standing three feet away from you.  There are no pheromones shared here–yet. We dance out of sight of each other.  Often all we have are words to communicate. There’s the power of art in images to share.   And then there’s music for when word language fails to bridge the gaps.

Fustercluck Blues Festival and Chicken Wing Eating Contest. From who else but~~ the Incredible one and only~ KKFI 90.1 fm Community Radio playing Blues dues out the wazoo!

O there ares soooo many public service announcements one can make! But seldom do they involve a whole lot of music and FUN! Now I’m no chicken eater ever, but if I was, then this little chicken wing eating contest with Blues on the side would definitely be on my tummy’s menu agenda. Oh yeah, KKFI is fundraising again with major Community Support–because, in case you don’t know already, that’s how KKFI has managed to stay alive on the sound waves for over twenty years–people put money in the radio jukebox cash jar of their own free will.  There’s no corporate backers, no media sponsors, just the music makers and the music lovers.  This is truly homegrown radio like you’ve never heard it before folks. It streams on the world-wide web 24/7 –>    http://www.kkfi.org/  .  It’s got volunteer DJs out the wazoo. It’s got a concrete 100,000 watts radius. It’s got indie and local music makers on air and on stage and on the money need feed bag all the time.  We got our Blues, smokin’ hot Jazz, Retro, Latino, Rock, Morning Buzzes M-F, Native Spirit on Sunday afternoon at 5pm with Rhonda LeValdo, Reggae and we even got damn fine L.A. Theatre Works. There’s even Chamber Music and Dr. Mike’s Old Timey Medicine Show. I’ve not even hinted at the Democracy Now! news, eco programs, Tell Somebody, local showcase, Mr. Bill, and Labor coverage.  Swing thru the link and check out The Program Schedule for what you may have a tough time finding anywhere else on one radio station but everywhere on KKFI  90.1 fm. Fuel for your hungry ears.  Now who among you has ever before heard of a Fustercluck Blues Festival featuring Wild Women, Junebugs, Bail Jumpers and Rhythm Kings and a chicken wing eating contest with two categories? Hmm? Come on, share and share alike amigas and amigos.

Sexy Sunday~late on Monday~ Ray Wilson~who else?

Time for a great guy voice with a sexy edge and some song ‘substance’.  Some things old, some things new, something in between. I’ve gone for variety here, folks, just to provide a small ear taste.  Poets, heads up–this is not pop mushy mush. If you’ve heard “Calling All Stations” then you you’ve heard Ray Wilson. Does Bob Dylan trip your musical traps?

If Dylan’s music is part of your musical treasure trove then stream into www.kkfi.org on Thursday at 7 pm for the Thursday Night Special’s presentation of Bob Dylan: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.  I wonder what James Joyce would think about this application of the title of his little tome?  Would he see it as a form of flattery? Why not? Afterall–both Joyce and Dylan are great writers–one prose and the other a poetic songwriter. Surely an Irishman would appreciate such an association with music? Well, no matter all around.
