Color, Music, and Emotion

ABSTRACT

Arnheim (1986) once speculated that different aesthetic domains (e.g., color and music) might be related to each other through common emotional associations. We investigated this hypothesis by having participants pick from among an array of 37 colors the five colors that went best (and later the five that went worst) with each of a set of 18 brief samples of classical orchestral music that varied in composer (Bach/Mozart/Brahms), tempo (slow/medium/fast), and mode (major/minor). They also rated each musical selection and each color for its emotional associations (happy-sad, lively-dreary, strong-weak, angry-calm). Systematic mappings were found between the dimensions of color and music: faster music and major mode were associated with lighter, more saturated, yellower colors, whereas slower music and minor mode were associated with darker, desaturated, bluer colors. More precisely controlled musical stimuli (single-line melodies by Mozart on a synthesized piano) produced more refined relations between the music and the colors chosen to go with them. These color-music mappings are mediated by common emotional associations, because the correlation between emotional ratings of the musical selections and emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them were extremely high (.90 to .98) for all emotional dimensions studied (e.g., people picked happy colors to go with happy music and dreary colors to go with dreary music). The mediating role of emotion was established by obtaining analogous effects when people picked the colors that went best (and worst) with faces and body poses that expressed emotions (happy-sad and angry-calm). Similarly high correlations were obtained when the emotional ratings of the faces/gestures were compared with corresponding emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them. Further findings identify a stable aesthetic difference between people in terms of their level of “preference for harmony” across the domains of color combinations, musical compositions, shape preferences, and spatial composition within a rectangular frame.

Stuck In Stress Spin Cycle? Forget the Straight-jacket get ‘Hijacked by Your Brain’ by Ford & Wortmann

Okay folks, usually ‘self-help’ books leave me cold for a number of reasons I’m not going to waste time typing about here. But this particular little tome has much to offer in these STRESS-full times where the pressure cooker of modern life keeps building up steam without a lot of positive outlets for release. This is not a preachy, ego-drive “DO THIS RIGHT NOW” book. The tone is conversational, direct and mindful of the fact that there is person reading it for a reason–probably because they’re dealing with STRESS of some kind. Wow, that’s something right there to commend this little blue book–awareness of a living, breathing person ingesting ideas via the printed text.

Dr. Julian Ford and Jon Wortmann are not out to dictate, impress, or intimidate with their skills and knowledge–they actually seem to have set out to HELP people deal with the stress of living in the modern world. The book contains references to real people and real experiences. The explanation of how our brains work with stress are easy to understand. If you know what’s happening to you when stress spikes, then you’re in a better position to deal with it. A lot of emphasis is placed on mindfulness and self-awareness. The discussion of stress as a positive and negative part of life is realistic and useful for how to take advantage of it. Yes, there are ways to use that energy to your benefit. The goal is to live what they all an “optimal life”–a good life, a life worth living, a life in a world where you have control of your thoughts, reactions, responses, if nothing else in your environment and in a stress inducing situation. The language is easy to read. The practice will require various degrees of effort depending on where you’re starting from–but, there’s a way offered here that can be of benefit to many people.
I picked this book up out of curiosity when browsing the new non-fiction books in my wonderful public library. I had no prior knowledge of its existence. After opening to a random page to read a sample I thought it might be worth checking out. If you’re looking for a means to deal with stress of any sort you might find it worth checking out too. No purple pills here, just information and a stress plan that’s been test driven extensively.

Sigh, WP is not allowing me to organize items as I wish–I’m not going to let it bother me though. All the parts are here so I’m going to just go with it. Yes, the video is WORTH watching. I didn’t dump it here to fill up space.

Big Win for Truth, Justice and FREE PRESS! Finally some sanity from the “system.” Democracy Now! wins in court.

Yes, folks there is GOOD news for a change on what has lately been a bleak dark landscape of a justice system suffering the pollution of Tar Sands ilk deluxe. Consider the recent execution of Troy Davis and you get my meaning pronto–unless you’ve been hiding under a rock waiting from some rain to end the abnormal drought affecting your homestead. Oh yeah, climate change is real and it has not yet begun to kick our collective butts like no other bite back of Mother Nature so far. How adaptable are you? Okay, on to the GOOD news–Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdel Kouddous->THE REPORTER IN EGYPT– and Nicole Salazar have won a settlement in a federal lawsuit against Minneapolis, St. Paul and, yes, the Secret Service for unlawful arrest of the Press.

THIS ROCKS

Why does this rock? Because if you haven’t noticed the freedom of the press has been a ghostly shadow of late in the US of A. If it weren’t for independent media and journalists one could argue that there’s not a shred of reputable uncorrupted by corporate interests press left living and breathing in America.  Journalists around the world are being killed in record numbers. I have yet to comprehend the condemnation and targeting of Al Jazeera News for so long. Oh I take that back, I DO comprehend it–Al Jazeera does what American Mainstream Media often fails to do these days–REPORT THE NEWS. OOPs that’s not fashionable these days for the comfort of The One Percent.  Good reporting gives the 99% information and information leads to communication and independent thinking and that leads to NEW IDEAS. Hot damn, The ONE Percent certainly does not want the feudal serfs of the 99% thinking independently.  The One Percent certainly do NOT want the 99% knowing what the profit driven agenda has done to people around the world and in the USA.  The One Percent does NOT want the still pre-occupied by Dancing with the Stars audience to be distracted by non corporate sponsored Reality.  Let’s sell tickets? Hmm, shall we? Why not? Sell tickets to those still with their brainpans stuck in the idiot creating boxes to the greatest show on Earth–the HUMAN EVOLUTION.  Yea, the human evolution that is currently underway around the world from Occupy Wall Street to the streets of Bolivia. The world is changing.  The tipping point is approaching. We have deadly serious choices to make if we are to survive as a species on Earth.  Some of you have heard this from me several times already. Sorry if it sounds like I’m beating a dead horse. I’m trying to beat a live drum.

So–this win for Democracy Now! is good news because it validates the right to a press corp to be free from arrest for covering events that The One Percent are not fond of having spread through their serfdoms.  Considering everything going on now from Occupying Wall Street–and beyond–to Protesting the Tar Sands Keystone XL Pipeline–a FREE, unimpeded working Press is urgently NEEDED.  Especially here in America where many serfs haven’t yet realized their place in the Feudal system that the Corporate Personhoods have been steadily creating.  Do we really want to wake up in the world of Orwell’s 1984?

I don’t. Do you?

Yes, it’s worth YOUR time to hear Amy Goodman Speak Truth.  Information is POWER!
