Reality Checked: All Governments Lie: Truth, Deception, and the Spirit of I.F. Stone

The opening scene with Colin Powell chilled me to the bone.

Ambrosio Vilhalva 1960 -2013, Guarani leader murdered

Is there no end to violence?

Why do we not live in harmony with the Earth and each other?

When will this destruction of people and Earth cease? When all Homo sapiens are dead? Is that the answer? Our own self-destruction of one another in order to stop death and destruction? Perhaps that’s what it will take for all of us to realize we and the Earth are one.  There’s more truth in “ashes to ashes” than we like to acknowledge as we play in cyberspace.

~~

Yes, I discovered this news item and dropped it here with some dark questions leaving visitors to create context themselves by following the links and watching the videos.

What we have here is a murder of another Indigenous person fighting for the right to life for his people and the planet.  That’s why this death/murder is of public interest.  There are people grieving for this man. His family. His friends. We talk a great deal about behaving like civilized creatures when there are many among us who are anything but civil to each other.  Not everyone does want a world of peaceful coexistence. Lots of people benefit from the murder and mayhem inflicted on Indigenous and Native people–and those Non-natives who support them. (Oh, everyone has DNA that was once “native” to a particular place on the planet. Yeah, even if you’ve forgotten this point, your genes haven’t.)  Profit is the name of their game. Unfortunately many of us contribute to the Profit by creating a demand for all sorts of nice things we take for granted–like clean drinking water, access to a lot of food, heat on demand, electricity, gas and all the toys that come with this package deal. Our wants often are supplied by others who cannot and do not enjoy the same. What would you do if all the “easy” things disappeared? No grocery stores with shelves full of yum yums. No gas at the pumps. No electricity 24/7. No water for every load of laundry and shower on demand. What would your life be like if someone stole your home? Hm? Oops, is that the nightmare button I’ve pushed?

Have we got context now? Hmm. I’m not sure. But this is what’s here now.

Searching for a satisfying love story via dvd? Search no more. Serve some~ Chicken With Plums ~ What More Could Hopeless Romantics Wish For?

Answer to post subject title question— I have no idea regarding what more. Oh that’s a lie. Sure I do. But that’s beside the point here when it comes to Chicken With Plums. Let’s put it this way, I ate the entire film meal and loved it.

burp

Is it possible to write a review and give nothing away about the content? Why would I want to do that if I’m pitching a story to people who are all about ‘what’s going on here’? For my own churlish amusement, I guess. Honestly, I think the film trailer gives away far too much information as it is. That’s not really fair considering this isn’t a film about some devious plot to overthrow the world order. Nope. It’s certainly not a film about that sort of sordid messiness. It’s more of an adventure into a few human hearts., how things are connected, intense smoke and controlling parents. Now does that last qualify as a spoiler or not? Nawww, I don’t think it does. That’s not exactly a breaking news story–though there are a few broken things here.

What makes a great story? What keeps you reading a book? Why do you keep watching a movie? Is it intricate plotting and scheming? Cunning and creepy characters with caustic conversation? Thrill seeking vicarious stunt action? Fast cars and hot women–and men? How about a not so fast train, plane and a boat? Frankly I think we need to redefine the nature of ‘hot’ for both men and women on main streets. But that discussion doesn’t really fit here so I’m going to leave it alone–if I can.  Back to the swing of things:  Stunning images and exotic locations? What is that special bait that gets the hook in your brain box and keeps you reading and watching? What trips your entertainment traps? What feathers tickle you humor bones? By the way, do you enjoy random visits with Death?

What kind of story do you pick for a chilly night with the home-fires? Do your fingers dance to drama, comedy, tragedy or romance? Or some giddy brew of everything? Check out the examples suggested and get back to me asap. Please feel free to suggest other examples.  Hint, that’s what the blank lines are supposed to encourage you to do. If it’s not working, let me know and we’ll revise accordingly. Thanks for your input even though you’ve yet to offer any. Yet.

Tragedy     ______  as in Othello

Comedy    ______  as in Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Romance  ______  as in Moonrise Kingdom

Drama     _______ as in Elizabeth Taylor On A Hot Tin Roof

Action    _______ as in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Me? What do I pick? I do it all as long as it’s got the goods to keep my imagination engaged. I like a full plate of a solid story, no-big-box characters, delicious visuals, and sensual sounds. Yesterday evening’s top film pick was Chicken With Plums.  Yes I indulged in several otheres, but, sigh, as amusing as they were, no other was qualifed for TOP billing except the film with the fruit. I would love to ramble on and on about this delight. But I won’t. It would pull the rug out from the act of discovery and exploration.  Taste it for yourself. Oh, and if you’ve never eaten plums except with your breakfast–you’ve been missing out on some damn fine sweet stuff. Consider yourself DEPRIVED. Hmm…maybe it’s not in my best interests to encourage others to eat plums as that will mean fewer plums for moi. How do I talk about this film without mentioning plums when they’re the last word in the title? Chicken With ____ is not the way to go. That fill in the blank with your favorite fruit just isn’t working for me.  How about you?

Chicken With Plums

Chicken With Plums Movie Trailer (2012). The french movie, directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud is set in Teheran, in 1958. From the Writers and director of Persepolis anime movie.

Note: The trailer says “Coming Soon” but the film has already come. No, you don’t have to go to France to see it. Silly bunnies.

Dessert?

Why yes, thank you.  I don’t mind if I do.  I’d like Chocolat.

PS, Were you expecting depraved instead of deprived? If so, what’s that tell you about you? No need to share. It’s quite alright to keep some things to ourselves.

Oh and if this is the most unsatisfying review of a film that you’ve ever read, please don’t hold it against Chicken With PlumsDon’t deprive yourself any longer than necessary on my account.

Fire: A Musical Descent Into the Lower Realms. Some What For Mentally Mature Audiences Only, A.K.A Those Not Easily Offended.

Whatever goes up must go down and whatever goes down must go up. Right? Huh? Yeah, for the sake of stairs and ladders which usually go in both directions, unless they’re the escalator steps in the Hungarian film Kontroll –no one knows where those escalators really go.

*

Anyway, fire burns up and down. If you’re a good fire-keeper then some down time embers go up again with some well blown O2. Are things getting out of hand here? Noooooo way. Or maybe by the end of the post things might be a tad untidy?

Blame this all on the chocolate-coconut-pecan taco. If you don’t know what that is hit the search box for another kind of breakfast special.

Oh I should never have posted that cartoon… Okay, on with the shows.

Electric Six is here because, well damn it, I’ve had to listen to this song by Electric Six a lot by default. By default, I mean that it’s a favorite of someone in my abode and hence is played OFTEN.  What’s the point of demanding and support freedom of thought and expression if you don’t follow through in your own home domain? Not much in my opinion. After years of exposure to the song and the video it was no surprise to moi that Danger! High Voltage came immediately to my brain-pan when I read that Bear’s theme choice was Fire. Honestly, “Fire in the disco!” was instantly on the scene.  It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it has been listened to and viewed with many cups of tea at hand for perhaps its number one fan with a mouse at their disposal.  I have no idea what Grandmother Fire would make of this video beyond the fact that, yeah it is base human nature to “keep starting fires.”

Note: “Play” at your risk, potentially offensive language and image contents for some sensibilities. Or maybe not?

Next, so much for The Good Old Days– Not so much, methinks.

Note: Very Strong offensive language content.   What do you expect from a song about going to hell? Polite conversation? Not here. Not now. Not today, anyway.

A popular pumping chantey, this was actually the last chantey sung aboard a commercial British square-rigger, by Stan Hugill in 1929, as the barque Garthpool was pumped out for the last time. There are a number of versions, and in some the “fire down below” is more explicitly a reference to venereal disease.

Love your local independent theatre or lose it fast. The Tivoli theatre MUST go digital by or go dark because the industry demands it.  Even though everything works just fine, some folks need to make more dimes by forcing new techno toys on everyone else. Jerry Harrington explains all on the Kickstarter video while giving a tour of this wonderful film theatre treasure in Kansas City, Missouri’s Westport area.  This is a truly community based film theatre. Please help save it by sharing the news with others who support independent film and businesses.

Musical Animal Crackers Anyone? Yes, I’ll Take the Horses, Please.

When willowdot21 picked “Animals” as a theme I went a little overboard for a time collecting music for all sorts of relatives.  “Buffalo Moon” goes a ways for the concept of animals in general–including a few of ‘us’.  It was getting very crowded in my blogcasa. which is not exactly suited to being an ark. So I decided to narrow things down to one particular animal—the Horse.  I figured a focus on one wonderful creature would help my sanity. It did. Even so I barely touched even the tip of the Horse iceberg.  One reason I settled on the Horse was to highlight the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota. The videos explain things pretty well so I’m not going to say more than that you can find them on the book of faces where they post many wonderful photographs of the horses in residence.  The following is from a recent email newsletter:

Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary has received rescued Navajo Foals
In making a public statement against horse slaughter in any form;  The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary partnered with Wild For Life Foundation’s Navajo Rescue and Recovery Mission in early October 2013.   Approximately 1,600 horses and burros were swept away from their Native homes as a result of the recent Navajo Nation roundups and were reportedly shipped for slaughter.  Many foals and other young horses were left behind to perish.  Wild for Life’s rescue efforts gathered the foals and sent out requests for help.
The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary along with three other sanctuaries have taken the rescued foals and given them life time homes.  The three foals; two fillies and a colt arrived at their new forever home in South Dakota on October 8th.
The goal at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is to save lives, offer hope and grant freedom to wild horses in peril.   We hope this partnership, with Wild for Life Foundation,  will continue into the future by helping other wild foals/horses in peril.

Gabriela | Sulphur Mustang Mare
Spirit of the Black Hills
Wild Horse Sanctuary Preservation Project (2011)

Gabriela (Sulphur Mustang Mare). Translation: Warrior of God: Her lovely black brown color reminds one of dark chocolate melting in the prairie sun. Gabriela and her mother Houlihan, a Sulphur Mustang Mare from the Sulphur Springs HMA, were donated to the Sanctuary in 2006. Gabriela was just a weanling and she hid behind her mother. Now at age 4, she has her own friends and lives bravely in a band of younger Spanish Mustang Spirits.

The Spanish Mustang Spirit of the Black Hills preservation project was begun in early in 2002. The Spanish, Sulphur, Kiger, and Sorraia Mustangs here at the Sanctuary in these herds are a direct remnant of the horses of the Golden Age of Spain, which is wholly extinct in Spain. The bloodlines are a treasure chest of genetic wealth from time long ago. These mustangs are very capable and durable mounts but have been undervalued for the last hundred years. The purpose of this project is to promote and conserve rare bloodlines that go back to the Old World Spanish and Portuguese Horses that came to the New World with the Conquistadors in search of riches. The Spanish Horses that were left behind by the explorers were worth more than the gold they had discovered. These Spanish Mustang Spirit horses forever changed the history man in the Americas.

I’ve included this Pure Nature Special about Przewalski’s Horses because it’s about an effort to restore what was lost from the wild with what was ‘saved’ in various parts of the world. It does have a great deal of music throughout it.  The footage is excellent.  I knew nothing of this effort and had never heard of Przewalski’s Horses until I saw a photograph of one at  Labellestudio’s blogcasa. Actually that’s not quite accurate because I had seen pictures of these horses as cave art. I thought they were extinct. But, then I visited Labellestudio and learned differently.  Thanks Labelle!

Myths, more myths and music everywhere! What’s a meandering mind like mine to make of it all?

Deer Bear, about this myth music theme . . .

Yeah, the places I have been with on this theme journey. Forewarning, some of the unexpected creations I’ve discovered during this fishing expedition will be coming to these blogcasa pages very soon.  Very interesting things are going on in creative minds everywhere. Oh yes indeed. Some are very scary.  Now, on with this show:

Something more modern regarding myths–and yet, so appropriate. Where do you ride your bicycle? What myths are you making?

Beach house  “Myth”

Ryan Smith upload

Lyrics:

http://www.myspace.com/beachhousemusic

Drifting in and out, see the road you’re on
You came rolling down the cheek
Say just what you need
And in between it’s never as it seems
Help me to make it
Help me to make it
If you build yourself a myth
Know just what to give
What comes after this
Momentarily bliss
Consequence of what you do to me
Help me to make it
Help me to make it
Found yourself in a new direction
Eons far from the sun
Can you come when they come to reach you
Let you know you’re not the only one
Can’t keep hanging on
To all that’s dead and gone
If you build yourself a myth
Know just what to give
Do you lies
We’ll let the ashes fly
Help me to make it
Help me to make it

The Fisher King from Merlin Series Three, composed by James Gosling.  The king and the land are one and the search for the holy grail to heal them both when the kind is unwell. Hmm. Is there a holy grail for our times?  Perhaps it’s the need to reconnect to the web of life instead of thinking we’re ‘outside’ of it?

In Arthurian legend, the Fisher King, or the Wounded King, is the latest in a long line charged with keeping the Holy Grail. Versions of his story vary widely, but he is always wounded in the legs or groin and incapable of moving on his own. When he is injured, his kingdom suffers as he does, his impotence affecting the fertility of the land and reducing it to a barren Wasteland. Little is left for him to do but fish in the river near his castle Corbenic. Knights travel from many lands to heal the Fisher King, but only the chosen can accomplish the feat. This is Percival in earlier stories; in later versions, he is joined by Galahad and Bors.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisher_King

Jethro Tull – Flying Dutchman – Music Video. This was a tough Tull choice. The photographs decided the issue for me.

The Flying Dutchman is a legendary ghost ship that can never make port and is doomed to sail the oceans forever. The myth is likely to have originated from 17th-century nautical folklore. The oldest extant version dates to the late 18th century. Sightings in the 19th and 20th centuries reported the ship to be glowing with ghostly light. If hailed by another ship, the crew of the Flying Dutchman will try to send messages to land, or to people long dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is a portent of doom.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Dutchman

James Padmore

I made this video because I love this song and it always made me think of these kind of images when I first listened to it.  The photographs were taken by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, celebrated photographer from Whitby (Yorkshire, England).  I hope you enjoy the video. Please leave comments.  Thanks.

I selected this because of the song lyrics. If anyone finds a ‘gentler on the ears’ version, please share it.

The Sword – Lament For The Auroch [ Age Of Winters ]

Lyrics:
Laboring in the liquid light of Leviathan
Spectres swarm around the sunken cities of the
Saurians
Rising up from the void through the blackness of
eternal night
Colossus of the deep comes crashing down with cosmic
mightAnd none may see again the shimmering of Avalon
Or know the fates of all the races man has cursed
Long gone are the ages of the Alchemists
Now there are none who know the secrets of the EarthHarken to the howl of the huntsman’s hounds
Or the clarion of kingdoms doomed and drowned
Lost to these lands is lore of the high ones
Sunless skies await the return of hte ArchonsLament the passing of the Auroch
And the slaying of the ancient wyrm
Would you dare to meet the gaze of the Basilisk
Or face the flames as the Phoenix burns? And none may see again the shimmering up of Avalon
Or know the fates of all the races man has cursed
Long gone are the ages of the alchemists
Blessed are those who keep the secrets of the earth
Lament the passing of the Auroch
And the slaying of the ancient wyrm
Would you dare to meet the gaze of the Basilisk
Or face the flames as the Phoenix burns?.*This is my homage to the standard myth concept.  I enjoyed the presentation of the story with the music overlaying it.  Yep, my picks are based on what tripped my trap along the way.The Legend of Osiris

One of my favorite mythological figures is the Green Man. I enjoy finding this pagan person in decidedly non-pagan establishments. I suspect he is having the last laugh.

Invention of Love (2010) Animated Short Film  ~  Oh, why is this here? Well, consider the entire concept of ‘love’ and its origins. Origins? Hmmm.  Mythic nuts and bolts for everyone.

Oh now here we go with some of that OLD OLD OLD time religion indeed. The goddess of war appears in many forms across cultures.  I couldn’t find something I really liked–yet–for a particular ancient Irish hero sooooooo, here’s Omnia’s rendition of the Crone of War.

Omnia ~ The Morrigan ~ Live Religion  —- Perhaps this should be Drone of War? Or perhaps the drones are just our incarnations of the crones?

MuddahNatur

The Morrígan is a figure from Irish mythology. She is a goddess of battle, strife, and sovereignty.
LYRICS

Over hills and over meadows
see the crow fly, feel her shadow
Over woods and over mountains
searching for a war

Her wings embrace each strife and battle
where swords they clash and chariots rattle
seeking out the one whose time
has come to take the blade

Morrigan ancient crone of war
I see your face, I’ll cry no more
Morrigan ancient crone of war
come lift me on your wings

Morrigan ancient crone of war
I hear your voice, I’ll breathe no more
Morrigan ancient crone of war
come set my spirit free

Kill for Morrigan
Maim for Morrigan
Fight for Morrigan
and you will
Slay for Morrigan
Die for Morrigan
Morrigan crone of war

“Outlawing Dolores Huerta” — She’s got great company in Tucson, AZ where Shakespeare’s The Tempest is Outlawed. Thou Shall Not Read!~ Or Shall We?

Do you celebrate your ethnic culture? Do you speak a language besides English? What’s your history? Where do you come from? Can people tell who you are by looking at your face? What do you read? What do you write? What music do you listen to? What does it mean to ‘be an American’? What does it mean to be human? Who are you? Where are your people ‘from’? Hmm?

*

Oh to be so feared as to be banned from Tucson.

Such is The Tempest.

dance a Caliban, twirl an Ariel,

ah Prospero what magic

do we dare now

love each other as ourselves

read what we please

why not

Isn’t America the home of the free?

Hmmmm, let me get back to you on that.

I hope The Bard is beside himself with glee wherever, whoever he be now.

Hundreds of years and stirring more than teacups with The Tempest.

Outlawing Shakespeare: The Battle for the Tucson Mind

NonprofitNews·

Outlawing Shakespeare: The Battle for the Tucson Mind is a documentary focuses on the elimination of the Mexican American Studies program within the Tucson Unified School District in Arizona. Under a federal de-segregation decree, Mexican American Studies was created and was successful at improving academic achievement. The documentary explores Arizona Attorney Tom Horne’s crusade as he and other state officials claim the program in Tucson is attempting to convince students to secede from the United States by creating “Aztlan.” Baffling students, parents and teachers, Outlawing Shakespeare explores why this tactic is being utilized.

The documentary explores how Arizona officials have outlawed books and authors such as renowned British author William Shakespeare because they believe he is to controversial.

Is there a rebellion in Tucson or are officials worried about an impending Latino majority in Arizona? The documentary explores how Arizona politics has become focused on race and adults blaming children and using intimidation to force students, teachers and parents not to speak out.

Passed in 2010, HB-2281 outlaws any curriculum focused on overthrowing the US government and focused on one ethnic group. This legislation is the only legislation ever to focus on the concept of “Aztlan” by a sitting attorney general of any state.

In 2006, Dolores Huerta visits Tucson High School and makes a speech. Within the speech, she states “Republicans Hate Latinos.” In 2010, Arizona Attorney Tom Horne and other politicians used these words as their rationale for passing HB-2281-The Ethnic Studies Ban. In this interview, Dolores Huerta discusses the statement and its affect.

“Capital” — new film by Costa-Gavras opens Oct. 25, 2013 in NYC and Nov. 1 in LA et al.

Film Is Now – WORLD CINEMA upload

A film, Capital,  is coming to the USA Oct. 25 in NYC and I wonder what the fat cats will make of it.  It will be interesting to see just what Costa-Gavras presents about the matters of money and economy which continue to influence daily life. In America corporations are ‘persons’– which allows big money to play at will and do as it pleases legally.  Keep in mind that the law has nothing to do with ethics, moral authority, or truth.

*As for the bigger picture of film-making and what will be tolerated in American movie theaters:

Consider this:  The Only Good Indian could not get booked into mainstream movie theaters stateside.  It’s a film about genocide in America.

Consider this:  Capital is a film about the destruction of the economy.  Hmm. what makes people more uncomfortable?
