TAR SANDS AND CLIMATE JUSTICE: PRESENTATION AND DISCUSSION NIGHT
Chapman Library: Monday, September 16
577 S 900 W
Day-Riverside Library: Monday, September 30 1000 N 1575 W
Our campaign to block tar sands development is about climate justice. We’re fighting for the survival of people down the Colorado River, from ourselves to the delta communities. This presentation will deepen your understanding of how defeating tar sands, oil shale, and other forms of extreme extraction are integral to the cause of furthering climate justice.
This holds particular relevance to residents of the Wasatch Front. Tar sands refining has begun in North Salt Lake, and it could scale up dramatically in the coming years if the mining proceeds in Utah.
We’ll create a space for sharing fears, concerns, and ideas. You’ll learn what PeaceUp has been doing to protect our shared resources. You’ll also get connected with people who are working on projects you might want to get involved with!
Want to help us organize a presentation for your PTA, congregation, community group, or neighborhood? Email Melanie@PeacefulUprising.org to set one up!

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Volunteer opportunities abound! We need your help now more than ever, to defeat tar sands and forge a livable future. We’re calling on everyone in our beloved community to ask themselves if they have any time to give to further the cause of climate justice this month. Every hour helps, and there are boatloads of ways to get involved.
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
We’re now recruiting for a robust list of volunteer positions! They’ll provide you with excellent organizing experience, a deeper understanding of climate justice, and the satisfaction of serving a vital role in a campaign that’s protecting our future. These are just a few of the positions we’re recruiting for!
Community Events CoordinatorPlan a fun monthly community event for the broader PeaceUp community each month, and spread the word!
Bold School PublicistPromote the PeaceUp Bold School by arranging radio spots, writing press releases, and making short presentations to various groups.
Research SpecialistEnhance our existing knowledge of tar sands and oil shale, and related governmental processes, by conducting research on these issues.
Meet at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education in Rose Park, at 1400 Goodwin Ave.
Come canvassing in the Rose Park community to let them know about an upcoming presentation on tar sands and climate justice at the local library! Invite them to get involved with the campaign or just attend, learn, and share.
These TWO canvassing opportunities will give us a chance to meet lots of community members living near refineries, who could be affected most directly by the impacts of tar sands on air quality. Afterward, we’ll meet up for a potluck!
MOCCASINS ON THE GROUND, AND DIRECT ACTION AT WHITE CLAY
Folks from Peaceful Uprising and allies recently traveled to the Moccasins on the Ground nonviolent direct action training camp in eastern Montana. Here, they shared skills and built alliances with an indigenous community working to halt coal extraction on their land. Numerous Moccasins on the Ground training camps have been happening since last winter, and by serving as an important resource for these camps, PeaceUp is building strong alliances with indigenous groups throughout the region. Together, we’re standing strong against all forms of extreme extraction and living our belief in climate justice.
The group also traveled to the Pine Ridge Reservation in the territory known as South Dakota to help Lakota allies blockade liquor stores and deliveries in the “town” of White Clay, which exists just outside of the reservation, has 14 residents, and exists solely to profit from the continued liquid genocide of the Lakota people. These continued actions have been having a significant impact on beer deliveries to White Clay.

Sometimes the book of faces is just perfect for exploring interconnectedness–especially when it brings all sorts of interesting people and places right to your news feed no hunting required. Beautiful images of horses being horses at the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota caught my attention a while back. Today they brought my attention to the film Running Wild: the Life of Dayton O. Hyde which is showing at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, Utah January 18-24, 2013. Apparently there’s more going in Utah than Peaceful Uprisings. Film site : http://www.runningwildfilm.com/

Here’s my favorite horse poem so far. Please share your favorite horse poems, photographs, videos and/or films via the comments.
devotees
slowly he disappears among the penned ponies
knowing and yet wishing not
the tents, uniforms, guns
wary of even his own now
aware their life fabric has been brutally sliced
soft mouths nuzzle his hands
he inhales ever reliable horse scents
cares not for calico, coffee or coins
long tails twitch and flick as he moves among them
keen to his warrior man smell
as willing to push their all beyond the limits
as he
wind racing
foreign tongue streams nearby
ripping good hearts into rancid meat
furthest away surrounded by hooves, manes, hot breath
In a very real sense Bidder 70, Tim DeChristopher, has been found guilty of a lack of premeditation in regard to his effort to save public lands in Utah from gas and oil company exploitation via illegal land sales. Yes, illegal even according to Interior Secretary Salazar. Having watched way too much crime drama on the idiot box, I find it strange that a judge would not allow DeChristophers’s MOTIVE for his actions be part of his defense. What was Tim DeChristopher’s motive? To save public lands from illegal land sales to gas and oil companies. Huh, and that’s a ‘bad’ thing? It’s a motive the judge clearly didn’t want spread about in the media. Such a motive might give people ideas, raise some serious questions, and might incite a huge public uproar? If you haven’t heard of Bidder 70, ask yourself why not? Seriously–ask why information about Tim DeChristopher’s spontaneous action in 2008 has not reached your over stimulated eyes and ears. Believe me, Obama and friends are very well aware of DeChristopher and his rescue of public land from the shady fun and games of the Bush playbook. Why isn’t all of America debating the issues that Bidder 70’s Trial raise? Why aren’t we all talking about a young man who has NO regrets for doing what he did and is willing to pay the legal price because he knows he did what needed to be done? Why aren’t we all questioning how our public lands are under threat by companies which are responsible for the destruction of our environment–the very environment that supports our ability to LIVE? Guess what America, it’s illegal to engage in ethical, moral, just action to save the Earth. Would you do what Tim DeChristopher did when he entered that auction and began bidding? Interesting to also note that the judge would NOT allow the fact that DeChristopher actually raised the money to buy the lands he bid on to be part of his legal defence. Yes, Bidder 70 actually was going to play the rules of the game and PAY for the lands he won through bidding at an auction. But the jury was not allowed to know this information. What’s that tell you?

AND
On the ongoing Peaceful Uprising in Mad-City–there’s a “rumor” that Dennis Kucinich will speak at the rally on Saturday. I suspect this rumor is true.
Btw, it’s also tractor rally time in Madison this Saturday as the Farmers protest the “Repair” bill’s cutting consequences for their Badger Care.
