A Love Letter In This Digital Age: Music Theme ~ Love ~ for Friday the 13th of December.

Music Theme for December 13. Yes, that’s a Friday. I say we defy Friday the 13th with Love.

Inclined to offer more than music? Please feel free to incorporate whatever trips your love trap.  No, it is not my intention to confine Love to only the romantic variety. Though you certainly may do so.  Explore however you are so inclined.  Feel free to mix media–music and film videos, poetry, prose, visual art. Incorporate your own work and the works of others. If you will, think of this as an online Love Letter drawing upon and going in any and all directions that inspire you.

By John Donne 1572–1631 John Donne

For God’s sake hold your tongue, and let me love,
         Or chide my palsy, or my gout,
My five gray hairs, or ruined fortune flout,
         With wealth your state, your mind with arts improve,
                Take you a course, get you a place,
                Observe his honor, or his grace,
Or the king’s real, or his stampèd face
         Contemplate; what you will, approve,
         So you will let me love.
Alas, alas, who’s injured by my love?
         What merchant’s ships have my sighs drowned?
Who says my tears have overflowed his ground?
         When did my colds a forward spring remove?
                When did the heats which my veins fill
                Add one more to the plaguy bill?
Soldiers find wars, and lawyers find out still
         Litigious men, which quarrels move,
         Though she and I do love.
Call us what you will, we are made such by love;
         Call her one, me another fly,
We’re tapers too, and at our own cost die,
         And we in us find the eagle and the dove.
                The phœnix riddle hath more wit
                By us; we two being one, are it.
So, to one neutral thing both sexes fit.
         We die and rise the same, and prove
         Mysterious by this love.
We can die by it, if not live by love,
         And if unfit for tombs and hearse
Our legend be, it will be fit for verse;
         And if no piece of chronicle we prove,
                We’ll build in sonnets pretty rooms;
                As well a well-wrought urn becomes
The greatest ashes, as half-acre tombs,
         And by these hymns, all shall approve
         Us canonized for Love.
And thus invoke us: “You, whom reverend love
         Made one another’s hermitage;
You, to whom love was peace, that now is rage;
         Who did the whole world’s soul contract, and drove
                Into the glasses of your eyes
                (So made such mirrors, and such spies,
That they did all to you epitomize)
         Countries, towns, courts: beg from above
         A pattern of your love!”

In case you’re in the dark about Donne. He was not a one poem hit wonder. The man delivered the poetic goods time and time again. He had The Right Stuff from start to finish. Yeah, I think he’s a damn cool poet even though he’s been dead for a few centuries.
*
Note:
On his way to a promising career, John Donne became a Member of Parliament in 1601. That same year, he married 16-year-old Anne More, the niece of Sir Egerton. Both Lord Egerton and Anne’s father, George More, strongly disapproved of the marriage, and, as punishment, More did not provide a dowry. Lord Egerton fired Donne and had him imprisoned for a short time. The eight years following Donne’s release would be a struggle for the married couple until Anne’s father finally paid her dowry.

So who is ready to lift some spirits with Love during this season of holy days ancient, current and future?  Everyone is invited to share, even if it’s only a single piece that matters very much to you. Share in the comments, post on your blog and drop a link here so that we’re all connected.  Small or large makes no matter.  Let’s celebrate Love for a few glorious moments together.

Catch Some Heat Rays ~ “Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun” ~~Music Theme

Ahhh this Music Theme selection process was nearly derailed twice. First by the film Sunshine and then by the ever delightful Doctor Who. Yep, I almost gave up all control and followed my slacker heart straight to full video view-ville. Making blog posts is a funny job and someone has got to do this one–moi.

*

Doctor Who 42  [As in 42 minutes to keep a spaceship from going straight into the center of the sun.]~ scene 14. There were several scenes I could have posted with exciting music, but I decided on this one because of what The Doctor learns and the rest of us ought to consider every time we take that great big sun in the sky for granted.

Whatever goes up must go down and whatever goes down must go up. Right? Huh? Yeah, for the sake of stairs and ladders which usually go in both directions, unless they’re the escalator steps in the Hungarian film Kontroll –no one knows where those escalators really go.

Anyway, fire burns up and down. If you’re a good fire-keeper then some down time embers go up again with some well blown O2. Are things getting out of hand here? Noooooo way. Or maybe by the end of the post things might be a tad untidy?

Blame this all on the chocolate-coconut-pecan taco. If you don’t know what that is hit the search box for another kind of breakfast special.

Reason five: I’ve got a thing for the keyboard man. Yeah, right. Reason six: People in the audience get to scream~squeal into the mic. Reason seven: Girl follows Jim under the stage. Yes, under the stage.

The Doors  ~ Light My Fire,  live 1968

*

Electric Six is here because, well damn it, I’ve had to listen to this song by Electric Six a lot by default. By default, I mean that it’s a favorite of someone in my abode and hence is played OFTEN.  What’s the point of demanding and support freedom of thought and expression if you don’t follow through in your own home domain? Not much in my opinion. After years of exposure to the song and the video it was no surprise to moi that Danger! High Voltage came immediately to my brain-pan when I read that Bear’s theme choice was Fire. Honestly, “Fire in the disco!” was instantly on the scene.  It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it has been listened to and viewed with many cups of tea at hand for perhaps its number one fan with a mouse at their disposal.  I have no idea what Grandmother Fire would make of this video beyond the fact that, yeah it is base human nature to “keep starting fires.”

Note: “Play” at your risk, potentially offensive language and image contents for some sensibilities. Or maybe not?

Electric Six  ~Danger! High Voltage

*

Next, so much for The Good Old Days– Not so much, methinks.

Note: Very Strong offensive language content.   What do you expect from a song about going to hell? Polite conversation? Not here. Not now. Not today, anyway.

Nick Cave ~ Fire Down Below, from Rogues Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys, ANTI- 2006.

Liner notes by Anti-: http://www.anti.com/catalog/view/67/P…
A popular pumping chantey, this was actually the last chantey sung aboard a commercial British square-rigger, by Stan Hugill in 1929, as the barque Garthpool was pumped out for the last time. There are a number of versions, and in some the “fire down below” is more explicitly a reference to venereal disease.

Human–What is that being? A Theme Essay with Musical Side-Effects.

*Okay, I picked this Human Theme and wow, did I ever put myself in one heck of a wormhole by doing so.  I don’t think this has gone at all as I thought it might. I’m really curious what Bear, Johnny, Willow and Deborah have come up with for their Human Theme Essays. I might try this again–or not. I can’t say I’m happy with this posting and I can’t say I’m not. Maybe I have too many issues with humanity in general at this point in time? Yeah, I’m more than a little pissed at us regarding the state of the only planet we can call ‘home’ because we are responsible for this state of affairs. So, I think that’s coloring my view of humans.  I suspect The Doors’ song just might sum up a good part of my attitude at the moment. But just part of it. Feel free to chat up any part of any of this. I really am interested in how ‘we’ view ourselves these days.  Now, on with the show:

Isn’t it cool that a band called The Killers has a song titled Human? If anyone knows of a band called The Lovers that has a song titled Human, please, please share it.

The Killers ~~ Human

*

What does it mean that we humans feel the need to make a declaration of our rights? Who violates innate rights and the natural laws and orders of our world? Oh yeah, we do. Falls under the phrase, ‘crimes against humanity.’  All humans are not nice, kind, compassionate and loving beings.  If we were then we would not need to make such statements–which are continually ignored and violated by our own kind. Hmm. What the hell are we going to do about this element of being human?

This UK series  about a vampire, ghost and werewolf living together in the same house and attempting to have ‘lives’ as human as possible, as impossible as that may be, is a sort of quest for a nonexistent holy grail for each of them.  Humans do a great deal of questing, questioning, and quests and so this non-human trio with strong human connections offers a great deal on the human condition and human nature. At least I think it does/did.  Moral choices just never seem to leave the daily in-box even when you’ve got to be careful around the full moon.

Being Human –Good-bye Trailer

I’ve included Time is Nothing partly because it gives glimpses of people around the world and the concept that humans travel a great deal from place to place. It also shows a lot of places touched by humans.

*

An Exercise in Humanity  The Doctor, as in Who, as human; a hell of a job for a Time Lord to do.  Song: Sia’s “Breathe Me” . How might a non-human attempt a life as human is the point of this Doctor Who montage of when Rose and a ‘human’ Doctor Who live as humans. I think it does a decent job of showing a range of human emotions and interactions. It’s certainly not complete–but it gives a window on some human couples.

 Eclaire

*

Robin Williams gets to play out several lifetimes in this film. Take or leave the concept of reincarnation as you please. Still, the film offers some perspective on the human condition over time.  In some ways it paves the way for the much more ambitious film, The Cloud Atlas.

Something about The Doors and this song just feels soooooo right.  Sigh.

This was an unexpected find via an online search. I was fascinated by someone actually writing about how to become a better human being–according to their perspective of course.

David Cain

Raptitude is a blog for getting better at being human. I see being human as a skillset — something you can get better at if you take it upon yourself to do so. You can learn to temper rotten moods, shed your insecurities, shore up your weak points and sharpen your strong ones. Human minds and bodies are complicated vehicles for which there is no manual and no training, but we can learn to drive them a hell of a lot better than we often do, if only we make a point of it.

And glittering prizes await! Consistently agreeable moods. Unshakable gratitude. Strengthened relationships. Abundant days and sleepful nights. Capabilities you never imagined were in you. Relief from boredom, envy, frustration and complacency.

A little skill and insight go a long way.

Typical? Who is typical? What does this concept even mean for humans? I’m not entirely sure to be honest. But this attempt to use data to create a profile that changes over time is fascinating for what it tries to do–and the qualities of humans such venues can never grasp.

Crows: Black, Dancing and Counting Everywhere! Catch Them If You Dare.

In case you haven’t already guessed there seems to be no end to the music about, referencing and associating with Black Crows.  This post could go on and on and on. I focused on black crows, and a raven, in order to create some cohesion for myself.  I hope there is little overlap between Bear, Willow, Johnny and myself in regard to our choices for this theme because there is so much sky to cover here.  Though I will be very surprised if Johnny and I don’t cover at least one musical selection. There’s a vast array of music, poetry, art, research, science and all the ways in which people record their observations and interactions with the Crow in their daily lives.  This post could simple fly away with me if I let it.    Kaw Kaw

Flash Mobs for Everyone! Let’s Sing and Swing!

Time for true confessions: the reason I picked this “Flash Mob” musical theme is because I got so carried away with willowdot21’s  “All Things Travel” theme that I could not resist continuing travelling around the world.  Blame the choice of Flash Mobs all on the “Ode to Joy” video which I’ve included here because it was the piece that sent me searching for mobs in places of transportation. Yes, you can travel the world via Flash Mobs everywhere. Some of them will even moon you. Yes, indeed, five guys and a fountain where it’s illegal to wade…yeah, I wonder if Bear, Willowdot21 or Johnny have selected that piece of young guy fun?  What I enjoy most about these Mobs are the expressions on those watching and those performing.
Enjoy, be careful with the mob from Moscow. Damn, I wonder what sort of a riot one hot guy with a boombox can incite if he were inclined to do so? LOL.
Imagine all the great music, fun and dancing everyone could be enjoying every day around the world if all the warmongering would just cease and desist. As Tracy Chapman sings: This could be heaven here on Earth.
