Wolf hearing at Minnesota Capitol
On January 28th, the Environment and Natural Resources Policy committee of the MN House of Representatives will hold an informational hearing on Wolf Management by the State of Minnesota.

Committee members will hear testimony from individuals, state agencies, and organizations concerned with wolf management policies and their impact on the long-term survival of the gray wolf in Minnesota.

What is at stake
The purpose of this hearing is informational and there will not be a vote taken on any specific bills related to the wolf. But we think that this hearing represents progress. Last year, the committee chair; Rep. David Dill, publicly stated that he would not hold any hearing about wolf management unless the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) indicated their wolf management activities were unsustainable.

With 650 wolves killed in just two recreational hunting seasons, and a 25% population decline prior to the 2013-14 hunt, there are clear indications that current wolf management policy is damaging to our native wolf population.

The January 28th hearing is important for wolf advocates because it will create a public record about the recreational wolf hunt, and the uncertainty that surrounds it. This hearing will influence the perceptions of legislators for the remainder of the 2014 session and beyond.

Why you should attend
Legislators are primarily concerned with the viewpoints of voters in their district. If you live in the district of a committee member (find out here), you can help by contacting their office before January 28th. Let them know you oppose recreational wolf hunting and trapping, and that you will be following their actions on this issue. All state representative seats are up for re-election in 2014 – let them know that you and the majority of Minnesotans value the wolf and that you expect representation on this issue.

We need a strong turnout of wolf advocates at the January 28th hearing to impress upon this committee the importance of the issue to their constituents. If your representative is on this committee and you plan to attend, make sure to let them know in advance that you will be there.

Informational Hearing on MN Wolf Management
When: January 28, 2014, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Where: 200 State Office Building, 100 Rev. Martin Luther King Blvd., St. Paul, MN

This is just one example of exploring the interconnectedness of all things. Namaste.

We Write Poems

red wolf eyes
We’re excited to present you the Red Wolf collection, the first We Write Poems prompted-poem anthology.

This first anthology is the culmination of roughly three years of work – people writing poems in response to prompts presented at this site. So prompts and the Internet were the great enablers of the creative process by which these poems were written and shared.

The title of the anthology, “Red Wolf”, reflects the art banner of our site. We think it helps define who we are, who we want to be – poets who look to play a little dangerously, realizing the hungry teeth also of our natures, and with willingness in allowing risk. Real writing calls for nothing less. But then again, we’ve nothing against also having fun.

And because prompts played such an integral part in triggering the poems we write, we decided to feature the prompts…

Bearspawprint’s music theme selection, Wolves,  can’t quite speak for themselves.  They’re being hunted by “us” for no sane reason. “6,000 permits to kill 625 wolves”? What is that about?  Wolves need our help to survive.   In addition to the music there are links to groups on Facebook for more community alliance information and actions.  I’ve included  two extra films for more information and education.

If you’re on the fence or indifferent, consider this: which predator is wiping out the other species on the planet?

Off the fence yet?

Running With Wolves in Poland   “Bells” music
A sled ride through the forest with a pack of semi-wild wolves.
These young wolves were part of a re-introduction scheme and have since been released into the wild, the conservation director was familiar to them and they seemed happy to follow the sled through the forest as long as he was present.

Republicans in Wisconsin like writing legislation in secret.  * They had attorneys and Legislative staffers write the most recent redistricting bill in private law firm offices – – earning a tongue-lashing from a US District Court Judge appointed by Ronald Reagan.
* They let an out-of-state coal mining company work behind closed doors to help write the iron ore mining bill.* And you can put the 2012 wolf hunt law on the list of Wisconsin legislative legerdemain, according to comments in minutes of a public, all-day, April 21, 2012 Wisconsin Wolf Stakeholders Committee meeting in Wausau.
Twenty representatives from the DNR, and a wide variety of environmental, Native American, conservation, animal, hunting, and other organizations attended the meeting, along with DNR facilitators and additional staffers.

‘White Water, Black Gold’ shows there is more energy in our world than dirty oil. What are we waiting for when clean energy already exists?

View entire film on Eco Watch http://ecowatch.org/2013/white-water-black-gold/

Eco Watch featured David Lavallee’s very accessible film White Water, Black Gold  and I could not resist sharing after viewing it online.  It does more than bring the toxic waste of Canada’s Tar Sands into view because it also presents some clean green alternatives that are already being successfully utilized not just in Germany, but ironically in Canada as well. What are the rest of us waiting for? For the Big Oil Companies to milk out all the profits possible while creating waste toxic waste dumps that destroy fresh water all living things depend upon for life? We cannot drink oil. Oil cannot make food crops grow.  Plants need water. No wheat crop means no bread.

Make no mistake that Big Oil and corporations like Monsanto do not comprehend the situation despite their public relations denial spins. They do indeed and they want to use it to serve their own ends. There are reasons that Monsanto wants to patent all seeds for their own profit. There are reasons some Americans are NOT allowed to “catch” rainwater in barrels for gardening. The reasons are profits for those who want to control all the natural resources that are basic to all forms of life. If ducks could pay taxes then they’d be taxed for swimming in ponds. Deer would be taxed for eating plants. Wolves would be taxed just for being alive. I suspect the predatory human population feels an innate threat from wolves who don’t care for domestication by humans as dogs do.  Wolves don’t need or want us humans.  I don’t wonder why not. Perhaps it’s their independence which has set off the curent war on their very existence in the states. Could be. Wolves don’t give a damn about the corporate human economy.  They’re bound only by the laws of nature. Oh, come to think of it, so are humans. Because in the end–it will be natural law which decides the survival of our species.  It’s about time we all came to terms with that reality.  Denial will not change outcome.

Gee, it appears I’ve gotten off the Tar Sands water usage and energy alternatives track of White Water, Black Gold.  It may appear so. But since everything is connected–and we are all ‘related’–then I haven’t really gone off track. I’ve just followed a stream of thought. Continuing downstream . . . .

What this boils down to is values.  Yes, what do we value? Our lives? All living things? Clean air? Clean water? Oil? Gas? Our oil dependent modes of transportation? What matters most to each of us? Why should each of us consider such questions? Because we’re the ones who will either change our ways for the betterment of all living things or we won’t. Whatever the politicians and corporations do amounts to their choices. We are responsible for ours, what we think, what we do, what we say. Does the state of the Earth reflect our values or those of someone else? Positive change is possible. We can make it. We may have to work very hard for it though. What are we waiting for?

I think we need to do more than get the President of the United States to shut down the Keystone Pipeline. The Tar Sands in Canada need to be shut down. Big Oil needs to be shut down everywhere.  It’s time for a healthy change.

Overweight Wolves? Where? Come on, where are these obese predators?

Come on, show me some wolves too fat to run because they’re overstuffed with so many meals of beef cattle.  I really want to see these monsters of the food chain. Apparently wolves are such a threat to the human food supply that they need to be hunted to the point of extinction yet again–according to cattle ranchers.  Wolves of all ages are under attack from us not so delightfully egocentric humans in Wyoming, Michigan, Montana, Idaho, Wisconsin and Minnesota.  According to Predator Defense, the War on Wolves has commenced with a vengeance since they were removed from the Endangered Species List. Approximately half the wolves in Idaho have been killed–of about 1,000.

So which species is relentlessly destroying the habitat of all living things, including its own, on the planet? Grizzly Bears? Wolverines? Wolves? Nawwww.  Homo sapiens gets the out of balance, eat till you bloat and then some more, selfish, greedy Top Predator Prize. Hey, we’ve even got airplanes and helicopters to fire away at animals from the safety of our  friendly skies. We usually don’t take on other predators face to face if we can avoid it. We’re working on drone warfare so that we don’t even have to look our human targets in the eye ever again. Just send in the Drones. They don’t discriminate at all. They aim to destroy anything programmed into their target range.

Defenders of Wildlife online http://www.defenders.org/

If there was a Dangerous Species List we humans would be at the very top. Why do we refuse to share the Earth with other living creatures? Is Homo Sapiens in essence an out of control cancer destroying every other living cell on this planet? What are we going to do about “us”?
