The Crazies—and just who might that be??

                                                   the crazies trailer

Lately filmakers have been springing the unexpected on moi.  In other words, they’ve been pitching out some films that actually defy their overt marketing packages. The Crazies is another addition to my “took me by surprise” list that now includes Avatar –a visual arts  treatise on anti-Imperialism, uncontrolled greed & power, and commentary on the everything is expendable, all for profit corporate mindset in such abundance around our global community. Oh real life examples of this can be found currently underway in Ecudar and Peru and Nigeria and . . . ..

I have learned to trust my son’s film viewing requests ever since he cajoled me into seeing 28 days later.  Oh yeah, there was a load of zombies rampaging everywhere–but then, about mid way the film turned into something deadly serious intellectually and ethically. Oh my what issues and questions it raised! Offspring also hauled me to that great monster movie, The Host (do not view this dubbed as it ruins the soundtrack’s effects).

If you’re just in the market for a tense horror flick, then by all means see The Crazies on that level. It delivers the tension, visual surprises, and touches of offbeat dark humor. David and Judy offer a loving relationship that works to get you engaged in their fight for survival. The film might also get you wondering about all things regarding military protocol in emergency scenarios–and a   few other Big Brother is Watching Us issues.  Just who are the real crazies in this film’s world and ours? That’s a very serious question these days.

Yi-Ching’s views of NYC–Let’s stroll!

               FEATURED BLOG AWARD!

Yi-Ching’s photoblog “waking up new” was the first photoblog I began visiting regularly when I first set up blogkeeping on wordpress.  It’s not just that her ‘eye’ agrees so well with my own–as in, “Damn right, I too would click my camera at that sight!” –but also her engagement with her enviroment, her awareness of her surroundings that leads  to seeing what others might miss as they walk along.

It was Yi-Ching’s photograph of a bold squirrel on a tree branch that prompted me to write “Mugged by a squirrel for a plum!” Btw,  folks, that’s a true story that can be found in my blog pantry via the search option. I really was held up by one mighty squirrel while in California.

Lately Yi-Ching has been incorporating her poetry into her photo posts–and that’s a very very good thing because she is a very talented poetess. I suspect she’s a closet songwriter.

Check out her diverse collection of captured images of New York City and elsewhere at —->>>>>>>

Native Spirit Radio & Bill Miller

Since Native Spirit Radio’s host Rhonda LeValdo is sooo responsible for introducing my ears to songs  like  “Indians and Aliens” (complete with commodity cheese)  and Keith Secola’s “NDN kars”.  (Both songs employ comic packages to present serious themes)–and I suspect somewhere along the sound waves on one of those Sunday afternoons in the 5 to 6pm radio programing schedule of www.kkfi.org, she tossed up some Bill Miller music too–it seemed only fitting to chat about Native Spirit Radio–like the ONLY show of its kind in my radio listening locale –and Bill Miller’s Spirit Rain in the same blogspot.

During Native Spirit’s hour Rhonda spins out the waves of Sharon Burch, Indigenous, Bear Creek and Thunderhill. Then there’s also some Stomp dance music, news across Indian country,  and every so often the “Birthday Song.”  It’s a great mix of contemporary, pow-wow, and traditional music with occassional interviews and commentary.

You can check out her great smile and find more information about Native Spirit Radio at    http://nativespiritradio.webs.com/

As for Bill Miller, he just picked up a grammy for Spirit North Wind.  I’ve been listening to his Spirit Rain since my venture to Chi-town.   It’s easy on the ears with some fine songwriting across the board.  His “Face the Blues” is quietly unsentimental yet packs a punch. “Prayers for the Truth” is so on target for so many issues in this country –and other places–the need to face the truth in order to deal with it and heal–that it can be an eerie listening experience. Perhaps my favorite song on this album is “I believe” –the opening lyrics say it all: “I believe in the things I cannot see/ I believe that the truth will come to me/And it will flow like a river to the sea/I believe.”
