All Packed and Ready to Go Forth and Conquer Yourself? Yeah, It’s Journey Time.

The Journey is such a deceptive phrase because it implies a beginning, middle and end when there really is none.  One thing leads to another and then to another so there’s always an ongoing journey — an infinite plot-line, if you will, that never reaches any conclusion. If it did then entropy would set in, and that would be the end of, well, everything as we know it. On the other hand, that might not be such a bad thing for cleaning slates and starting over from scratch.

Why Across the Universe?

Because of all the concrete and abstract journeys it contains: a young man’s journey from home to find his biological father; journeys of the heart and mind; journeys into and out of the war machine; journeys of friendship; creative journeys and spiritual journeys. The film is pretty much jam packed with a lot more than great Beatles’ music, though that alone is reason enough to give it some of your precious time–if you’re a Beatles fan, of course.

Across the Universe ~ I Want You

A great survival story is a great survival story—that’s my response to those folks who have issues with the source material for this film.  Frankly, I just don’t give a damn.  Considering the way serious political history is constantly abused, misused, spun, and misrepresented by some film industries, I can’t get worked up about whether or not everything in this film is factual or not.

Poland’s Dirge  by Chopin

myyellowlabfan

Chopin left Poland around 1830, just before the uprising of the Polish people against the government… This song, which was never meant to be published, was one of the songs that he composed for friends and private occasions, or just for himself… although it was not dated, I think it was about the tragic end to that uprising, when he was afraid for his family and friends still in Poland, and for the Polish people, and their hopes for freedom… Aleksandra Kurzak sings this patriotic song with a lovely legato line and a heartbreaking and exquisite sensitivity to the text and music…
Nelson Goerner is her excellent accompanist.

The words are important – here they are in English

Tree, so free and noble, fast thy leaves are falling!
From the grave a bird with mournful note is calling:
O! Poland misfortune hate thy home o’ertaken,
thy truehearted children from death shall never waken,
Ev’ ry town and village lonely watch is keeping,
Through the fields deserted wander women weeping,
All the sturdy reapers hath the wartime needed,
And the corn, fully ripened drop the grains unheeded

Warsaw saw the banners which our youths unfolded
Free united Poland shall in glorious form be molded.
And they fought in winter, fought when suns were burning
and the autumn found us still for freedom yearning
All in vain for freedom strove our valiant brothers
None were left to comfort Poland’s mourning mothers.

Did they fall in battle? Captive were they taken?
Did they haply wander homeless and forsaken?
Heaven itself hath left us, left us here to languish:
God and man desert us in our bitter anguish

O! unhappy Poland! unhappy Poland! O! Poland, O! Poland,
Were thy sons restored to us, could the brave that perished
Help once more afford us… All dismay and terror
from our breast would vanish, war no more our dear ones
from our homes would banish.

Though by hands of traitors, Poland’s freedom perish,
Still of Poland’s heroes shall the mem’ry flourish..

Color, Music, and Emotion

GoogleTechTalks

June 30, 2011

Presented by Stephen E. Palmer
Professor of the Graduate School
Psychology & Cognitive Science
University of California, Berkeley

ABSTRACT

Arnheim (1986) once speculated that different aesthetic domains (e.g., color and music) might be related to each other through common emotional associations. We investigated this hypothesis by having participants pick from among an array of 37 colors the five colors that went best (and later the five that went worst) with each of a set of 18 brief samples of classical orchestral music that varied in composer (Bach/Mozart/Brahms), tempo (slow/medium/fast), and mode (major/minor). They also rated each musical selection and each color for its emotional associations (happy-sad, lively-dreary, strong-weak, angry-calm). Systematic mappings were found between the dimensions of color and music: faster music and major mode were associated with lighter, more saturated, yellower colors, whereas slower music and minor mode were associated with darker, desaturated, bluer colors. More precisely controlled musical stimuli (single-line melodies by Mozart on a synthesized piano) produced more refined relations between the music and the colors chosen to go with them. These color-music mappings are mediated by common emotional associations, because the correlation between emotional ratings of the musical selections and emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them were extremely high (.90 to .98) for all emotional dimensions studied (e.g., people picked happy colors to go with happy music and dreary colors to go with dreary music). The mediating role of emotion was established by obtaining analogous effects when people picked the colors that went best (and worst) with faces and body poses that expressed emotions (happy-sad and angry-calm). Similarly high correlations were obtained when the emotional ratings of the faces/gestures were compared with corresponding emotional ratings of the colors chosen to go with them. Further findings identify a stable aesthetic difference between people in terms of their level of “preference for harmony” across the domains of color combinations, musical compositions, shape preferences, and spatial composition within a rectangular frame.

“Tibetans  challenge XI Jinping – Gangnam Style.

Upload by   SFTHQ   http://www.youtube.com/user/SFTHQ?feature=watch

Published on Nov 7, 2012

On the eve of the CCP’s 18th Party Congress, Students for a Free Tibet and the International Tibet Network release a parody video titled “Tibetans challenge Xi Jinping – Gangnam Style.” A takeoff of Korean star Psy’s uber-popular Gangnam Style, the video features China’s heir apparent as a dimwit — a big-headed oaf whose only response to Tibetans’ growing resistance is to arrest, beat and torture protestors. But Xi — like the four generations of undemocratic CCP heads before him — cannot stop Tibetans who are moving beyond fear and challenging the very foundations of Chinese rule in Tibet. Ultimately, the joke is on Xi Jinping, the soon to be leader of the unfree world and a remnant of authoritarian rulers of the past. Xi: Resolve the Tibet crisis now or Tibet will soon become your biggest headache.

Join Tibet’s Xi Challenge:
http://www.xijinping-tibetchallenge.org/

About the making of this video: Using the power of humor and theater, this video highlights the cruelty and absurdity of the Chinese government’s colonial policies in Tibet that have driven 63 Tibetans to set themselves on fire in protest of Chinese rule; 50 this year alone. It also depicts some of the creative protest tactics being used by Tibetans to challenge China’s occupation, including a 2011 boycott of Chinese vegetable vendors. This video will be banned in China and Tibet but Beijing’s censors cannot stop the truth from spreading: Xi Jinping, China’s 5th generation leader will be the last to rule Tibet. Above all, this video is a call to action to the world, urging individuals and governments to help the Tibetan people in their nonviolent struggle for freedom.

Two Weeks In Madison WI, A Tribute, The music is “Wander My Friends” by Bear McCreary

TheVoiceOfWisconsin

BEFORE there was “Occupy”  the people of Wisconsin occupied the Capital Building in protest.  This ongoing event was IGNORED by most of mainstream media in the United States.  Other countries sent reporters to cover what was happening in Madison while the major networks in the USA did their best to ignore it. Democracy Now! was one of the few American news outlets that provided coverage. Students, teachers, firefighters, farmers and people from every social economic class in WI joined together with the Wisconsin 14 who did the only thing they could to stop The Bill–they exiled themselves from the state of WI.

“Tell Me What Democracy Looks: This is What Democracy Looks Like” —Inside the Capital building in Madison–this was not a fifteen minute protest. This continued for days on end until Gov. Scot Walker found ways to keep the people out of the building. Enlarge the video to full screen and watch for the round ‘food’ tray, I think it’s bread, come to the drummers through the crowd.

Bullet Proof

No Time For Apathy

Fair Use – For Educational Purposes Only (feel free to mirror)I do not own any of the material (music, images & video).Watch in HD/Full Screen and read the following before starting the video. The following video tries to cover 1200 years of History (from my perception, I live in BC so there is a couple of issues that are close to my heart that are represented), relating to the indigenous peoples of North America from the Viking, Spanish and British invasions, to current. It is an attempt to cover a long time frame in a short period of time and I mean no disrespect to anyone. It is a show of support for the “Idle No More” campaign, and to show my support towards peaceful protests. The images and videos used are meant to portray a general overview and are not meant to cast all non indigenous individuals in a bad light. I believe most human beings are on the same page when it comes to equality and fair treatment. It is a little blunt, but sometimes there is no way around it…..Music:”Titanium” – David Guetta cover by: Boyce Avenue

This non-violent action was done in the most peaceful and loving way in the HISTORY OF MANKIND! The people of Oakland, CA have showed the rest of us how to stand together and continue this move towards true democracy and true economic repair of the chronic and cynical damage inflicted on the 99 by the greed of the 1%.

To provide a sense of the number of people involved, here is Helicopter ‘music’ from the air view provided by a news cam. Soon after there would be no more of these views as the local television stations ceased reporting to the public the huge turnout. Probably in an effort to NOT inform and encourage others to participate. The main coverage was via people live-streaming the event on the ground via smart phones and laptops to online  livestream sites where thousands more people watched on the world wide web.

Occupy Oakland called for a general strike on the Port of Oakland, the 5th Largest port in the United States. They held the Port for 20+ hours stopping out incoming and outgoing cargo trucks.

90 Self Immolated Tibetans due to policy “made in China.”

The International Campaign for Tibet –> http://www.savetibet.org/

While the “free” world (Orwellian overtones notwithstanding) goes about its seasonal consumption binge to purchase many goods stamped with “made in China” the indigenous people of Tibet have been setting themselves on fire in protest.  Participants in the Occupy movement have nothing on Tibetans when it comes to legitimate grievances ranging from rampant cultural genocide to environmental destruction. There is no way to “spin” what has happened in Tibet during November 2012. There’s no double talk that puts things to rights.  Native American children may have to relinquish their statistical standing as the group with the highest suicide rate in the world to the Tibetans determined to be “heard” by resorting to suicide by fire.  I don’t write the preceding sentence without serious concern for the harsh realities faced by both groups.
